To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB D. SPAUGY, a citizen of the United 1, States, residing at Meyersdale, in the county of Somerset and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gearing for Washing-Machines, of which the following is a specification. 1
The invention relates to gearing, and more particularly to the class of gearing for washing machines. v The primary object of the invention is the provision of a gearing wherein there is employed cranks which cooperate with gears so that on rotation of the gears the cranks will convert such motion into reciprocatory movement whereby an agitator within a washing tub will be driven in this manner.
Another object of the invention is the provision of gearing'of this character wherein the same is mounted upon the bottom of the tub, thereby leaving the top of said tub free so that the cover or lid for the tub can be opened without being burdened with gearing or other parts and also eliminating any possibility of danger to the operator as the gearing is out of reach and obscured from View. A further object of the invention is the provision of gearing of this character wherein the same can be run by a motor or by hand and is designed especially for use with washing machines.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of gearing of this character which is thoroughly reliable and efficient in operation, strong, durable, and inexpensive of manufacture.
.Other objects will be in part obvious and in part hereinafter set forth.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction,combination of eletion ments and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter described, and the scope of the application of which will be defined in the appended claim.

Referring to the drawings in detail, A designates the tub which is of the usual upwardly tapered form and preferably supported upon legs B fastened thereto in any suitable manner, while at the top of the tub is a swinging cover or lid 10 which is suitably hinged thereto, and on the raising of the same permits access to the interior of the tub.
The gearing, as will now be described, is mounted upon the bottom 11 of the tub so as to be out of theway and comprises a main bed plate 12 formed with a plurality of ears 13 through which are passed suitable fasteners 14 for the securing of the head plate to the bottom 11 of the tub. In this instance the bed plate 12 is spaced from the bottom 11 and carries thereon a bridge plate 15 which is spaced therefrom and parallel therewith. Between the plates 12 and 15 are arranged large and small meshing gears 16 and '17 respectively, which are fixed to shafts 18 j'ournaled in the plates 12 and 15, while fixed to the shaft carrying the small gear 17 is a fly wheel 19 having a belt or pulley flange or rim 20 over which is trained the driving belt 21 operated by a motor 22 preferably of the electric type, although any othei' type of motor may be employed if desire I I Journaled in the plates 12 and 15, at one side of the small gear 17 is a spindle or shaft 23 which extends upwardly through the bottom 11 of the tub'A centrally thereof and has fixed thereto interiorly 0f the tub an agitator 24: for the successful washing of clothes within the tub of the washing machine. On the shaft 23 is fixed a crank 25 to which is connected a throw link 26, the same being also connected to a crank 27 fixed to the other shaft 18 carrying the large gear 16 so that on the rotation of the gears 16 and 17 by the motorthe link 26 connecting the cranks 25 and 27 will reciprocate the shaft 23 and correspondingly the agitator 24L interiorly 'of the tub of the washing ma.- chine.
Mounted on the bottom 11 of the tub A at the desired-point is a bearing 28 in which is pivoted a throw lever 29, to which is conto said 5 that motion from the latter can nected throu h the medium of a universal vjoint a lin I 31 which has at opposite ends a universal joint 32 adapted for detachable connection with the pivot between the link 26 and the crank :25 so that the gearing can be operated by hand if desired and in this event the belt 21 is detached from the flange or rim 20 on motor is dispensed with for power.
Fixed to the top of the tub support 32 having arranged thereon a wringer 33, the Shaft lt for one of the wringer rollers having loosely journaled thereon reversing gears arranged a clutch sleeve 36- which is keyed shaft 34: and this sleeve is adapted to be thrown into clutching engagement with either of the gears 35 for the locking of the same to the'shaft 34: in any suitable manner. Meshing with the reversing gears 35 is a pinion 37 carried upon a vertical shaft 38 journaled in'suitable bearings 39, the lower end of the shaft 38 being fitted with a pinion 40 which meshes with the large gear 16 so be imparted to the shaft 34 for operating the wringer.

claim:
A washing machine gearing comprising a bracket support adapted to be fixed to the bottom of the tub and including a plate arranged in spaced parallel relation to and below said tub bottom, an agitator spindle mounted insaid plate, inter-meshing gears mounted in the bracket above the plate, a power connection for one of the gears, a crank operated by the other of said gears, an arm extending from the spindle, a link connecting said arm and crank to drive the spindle by means of the gears, and a manually operable member adapted for connection with the arm, said arm, link, crank, and manually operable connection being disposed below the plate of, the bracket.
