Description

W, M. EARHART.
LID OPERATING DEVICE.
APPLICATION FILED- MAY 4. 1920.
LWKSEBD Patented May w, 1921.

INVENTOR ATTORNEY WAS WALTER M. EABHART, QF HOPE INDIANA.
LID-OPERATING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May i, 1920. Serial No. 378,890.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER M. EARHART, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hope, in the county of Bartholomew and State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Lid-Operating Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a lid operating device and has for its primary object the construction of a device of this character of simple, substantial construction which may be easily operated and which includes a spring so connected and tensioned as to assist in the lifting of the lid.
An object of the invention is the construction of the mechanism operated with very little effort for raising and lowering a lid in such a manner that the finger of the 0porator will not come in contact with the woodwork.
A feature of my invention is the novel manner of constructing and associating the bell crank with the rod so that the pivotal connection of the bell crank with the rod will be thrown to one side of the pivot of the bell crank for mechanically holding the lid in open position.
Vvith these and other objects in view the invention will be better understood from the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein Figure 1 is a sectional view through a portion of a victrola showing my invention applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the victrola.
Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view.
Fig. & is a vertical sectional view.
Again referring to the drawing illustrating one construction of my invention the numeral 1 designates a rod having its upper end pivotally connected to the lid 2 as indicated at 3. The lower end of the rod is pivotally connected as shown at 4. with one arm of the bell crank lever 5. This bell crank lever 5 has a pivotal connection 6 with a bracket 7 attached to the body of the victrola. A link 8 pivotally connects the other link of the bell crank lever with the finger piece 9 which is slidably mounted in the slot 10 in the body of the victrola.
For the purpose of reducing the amount of pressure necessary for raising the lid through the link mechanism I provide a coil spring 11 connected to the bell crank in a manner to assist the opening of the lid when pressure is applied to the finger piece 9.
It is, of course to be understood that the device may be constructed in various other manners and the parts associated in different relations and, therefore, I do not desire to be limited in any manner except as set forth in the claims hereunto appended.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is 1. A lid lifting device comprising a rod pivoted to the lid and manually operated link mechanism connected to the rod in a manner to force the lid to open position and automatically hold the lid. in its open position, and a spring for assisting such movement.
2. A lid operating device comprising a rod pivoted to the lid and manually operated link mechanism including a bell crank lever so constructed and associated with the rod that the latter will be given movements and mechanically held in position to hold the lid open.
8. A lid operating device comprising a rod having one end pivoted to the lid, a bell crank lever having one end pivoted to said rod, a slidably mounted finger piece, and a link connection between the finger piece and bell crank lever.
4:. A lid operating device comprising a rod having one end pivoted to the lid, a bell crank lever having one end pivoted to said rod, a slidably mounted finger piece, a link connection between the finger piece and bell crank lever, and a coil spring connected to assist the raising of the lid.
In testimony whereof I ailix my signature.
WALTER M. EARHART.
