CUSPIDUR. APPLICATION FILED. JULY 27. 1920.

rnnnxrrrnn, or rnoMMALD, MINNESOTA.
I cosrrnon.
Specification of Letters Patent. Pate t d J 18 1 Application filed July 27, 1920. Serial No. 399,285.
Be itknown that I, l iR kNK Lrrnn, a citizen ofv Jugo-Slavia, residing at Trommald, in the county of Crow ing and State of .Mi-nnesota, have invented certainnew and tion to prevent theescape of odors there from and also for various sanitary purposes.
A further object of the invention is to provide a resiliently mounted closure gate for the lower end of the receiving funnel of a cuspidor, the ate being foot operated to open the same when the cuspidor is used and automatically closed upon a release of pressure thereon.
With the above and other objects in view, the present invention consists in the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described in connection with the accompanying drawing and in which like reference characters indi cate similar parts throughout the several views.
In the drawings,
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a cuspidor constructed in accordance with the present invention, the resiliently mounted closure gate for thereceiving funnel being shown by dotted lines in open position, Fig. 2 is a topiplan view thereof, and Fig. 3 is a side elevational view showing the slotted guide for the gate opening mechanism. 7
Briefly described, the invention aims to provide a. sanitary cuspidor wherein the contents of the same are sealed to the atmosphere, there being provided a manually journaled in the side wall of the cuspidorJ Referring more in detail to the accompanying drawing and particularly to Figs. 1 and 2, there is illustrateda cuspidor of cylindrical formationembodying a side all l and a flat bottom 5 whicl'rcarries a lateral foot 6 having nail, receiving openings 7 therein by which foot the cuspidor is secured to a convenient support as .a floor or bracket.
The cover for the cuspidorembodies an annular flange 8 inclosing the upper end of the s de wall 41 and having a bayonet slot 9 opening at the loweredgethereof and received on thep'in 10 carried by the wall 1, thus to lock the cover to the wall. The flange 8 of the cover carries the funnelshaped member 11 overlying the open upper end of the cuspidor and provided with an enlarged central opening 12 shown more clearly in Fig. 2.
A resiliently mounted closure gate is adapted for closing the opening 12 and .in-
cludes a disk 13 having a peripheral flange l4; fixed to the pin 15 journaled in the brackets 16 carried by the cover part 11. To
place the closure gate 13 under tension, the
rod 1'? journaled in the brackets 16 has the coil spring 18 wound thereon with one free end 18 engaging the underside of the cover section 11 while the other end 18 engages the underside of the closure gate 13 as clearly shown in Fig. 1, thereby placing the closure gate under tension and operating to hold the gate in a normally closed position.
To effect the opening of the gate, foot operating mechanism is associated therewith and includes the mounting ofa sheave 19 in an opening 20 provided in the cuspidor wall a and from which sheave a chain 21 travels, the inner end of the chain carrying a hook engaging an angle arm 23 secured to the underside of the gate 13 while the end of the chain projecting outwardly of the cuspidor is attached to a foot operated lever. The foot operated lever includes an angle arm formed of a vertical leg 2 1 to the upper end of which the chain 21 is connected, the leg 24 being guided in its vertically sliding movements by the U-shaped guide 25 having a forward vertical slot 26 through which the lower'end of the leg 2 1 freely projects and terminates in a pedal 27.
7 Assuming that the gate 13 is in the closed position shown in Figll with the pedal 27 elevated as illustrated by full lines, pressure on the pedal will move the-chain 21 to open the gate 13 against the tension of the spring 18, the vertical sliding movements of the pedal 27 being guided by the lever section 2 1 sliding the guide 25. When pressure is relieved on the pedal 27, the spring 18 will return the gate 13 to its closed position,
thereby practically sealing'the contents of the cuspidor for sanitary and sundry purposes; 7 7 While thereis herein shown and described 'thepreferrecl embodiments of'the invention, it s nevertheless to be understood that minor changes maybe made thereinwithout .departing from'the spirit'and scope of the invention as'claimed. i
What is claimed as new-is A cuspidor of thetype described comprising a receptacle, a funnel-shaped cover therefor, a closure gate for the lower end of thefunnelrshaped cover, a pair of brackets carriedby said'cover, a pin journaled in "said brackets for supporting'the closure 7 r gate, a rod j ournaled in said brackets, a wire secured to the outer wall of the receptacle adjacent the bottom thereof, an L-shaped lever having the vertical legthereof slidable in said guide and the horizontal leg projecting outwardlyjtherefrom, a'chain connectionbetween the upper end'of the leg and said gate passing over "the sheave, a
bracket carried by the lower edge ofthe receptacle for rigidly-mounting the same.-
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature. 7
