Description

A. B. POWELL.
HAIR CURLER.
APPLICATION -F|LED OCT. 31. 1919.
Patented May 3, 1921.
FIG. 2.
FIG. 1
llVl/E/ VTOH m 1,3, M
ATTORNEY UNITED STATES ALLIE B. POWELL, 0F PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
HAIR-GURLER.
Application filed October 31, 1919.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALLIE B. PownLL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented an Improvement in Hair-Curlers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to hair curlers and it has for one of its objects to provide a hair curler constructed, preferably, of relatively small gage wire which is resilient and flexible. It comprises a member which may be described generally as of U-shape, the portion of said member connecting the opposite sides thereof being provided with means whereby an intermediate member may be readily pivotally and swingingly connected thereto.
A further object of my invention is to provide the said swinging or pivoted member with hooks at its outer swinging end for engaging the outer free ends of the opposite sides of the U-shaped member, which hooks are formed integrally or otherwise connected permanently with the said central member.
Other objects and advantages of my invention will be particularly pointed out and referred to in the detailed description thereof which follows or will be apparent from such description.
In order that my invention may be readily understood and its practical advantages fully appreciated, reference may be had to the accompanying drawing in which I have illustrated certain forms of embodiment thereof. However, it will be understood that the invention is susceptible of embodiment in other forms of construction than those shown.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a hair curler constructed in accordance with my invention;
Fig. 2 is an edge elevation of the same;
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a modified construction of curler embodying my invention; and
Fig. 4 is a side elevation of still another form of curler embodying my invention.
Referring to the drawing:
1 designates the opposite sides of one member of the curler, said member being of U-shape or of the general shape of an ordinary hair pin. These sides 1 are connected together at one end by a cross portion or Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 3, 1921. Serial No. 334,693.
member 2, to which the central cooperating member 3 of the curler is pivotally or swingingly secured.
In Figs. 1 to 3 of the drawing the memher 2 is bent at its center to form a relatively deep rectangular shaped notch 4. In Fig. 4 the transversely extending connecting wire 2 is bent or looped to form an eye 5. In the forms of construction shown in Figs. 1 to 3, the central cooperating member is pivotally connected to the portion 6 of the wire constituting the bottom of the notch 4. The sides of the notch 4 are preferably arranged substantially at right angles with respect to the bottom wire 6 thereof so as to render it unlikely that the hooks by means of which the central cooperating members 3 are secured to the part 6 will slide or move therefrom onto the said sides of the notch.
In Figs. 1 and 2 the central cooperating wire member 3 consists of a single wire bent as at 7 to form a loop or hook which is in engagement with the bottom portion 6 of the notch 4. The outer swinging end of the centralmember 3 in said Figs. 1 and 2 is bent to form double wire hooks 8 situated laterally of the central body portion thereof. These hooks are adapted to engage and hold the outer free ends of the sides 1 of the U-shaped member of the curler. The extreme outer end of the wire is bent as indicated at 10 to engage the central wire 3 at a point adjacent to the lateral bend made in the said wire in the formation of the hooks 8.
In Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawing the central cooperating members 3 consist of a single wire bent as shown and provided with portions twisted together to form the intermediate body portions thereof. The ends of said wires are provided with hooks as indicated at 12 which hooks are arranged in adjacent parallel relation to each other and are in engagement with the bottom 6 of the notch 4 and the eye or loop 5 respectively as shown. Portions of the wire at the outer ends of the members 3 are bent and extended laterally as indicated at 15, such laterally bent portions being bent and shaped to form inwardly extending hooks 16 as shown for engaging the opposite sides 1 of the U-shaped members near their outer free ends.
In the construction shown in Figs. 1 to 3, the central cooperating members 3 are free to swing entirely around their pivots. This is not essential but may be found desirable.
In the construction of curlers embodying my invention I prefer to employ non-corrodible wire of a gage to provide the requisite strength, flexibility and resilience.
I have not illustrated the hair in curled position upon the curler because the manner of using a device of this character is well understood. It may be stated, however, that the hair may be coiled or bent alternately around the sides 1 and the central cooperating element 3; or it may be coiled around the central member 3 alone; or it may be coiled as a spiral around the outside of the sides 1 of the U-shaped member. In any case, after having been wound or bent around the elements of the construction as just described, it is held in place by placing the outer end portions of the opposite sides v1 in engagement with the hooks 8 or 16 as the case may be,
Instead of employing metal wire for the construction of curlers embodying my invention, any other desired suitable material may be employed, such for example, as celluloid or zylonite.
I claim:
1. A hair curler comprisin a U-shaped member consisting of wire, tlie transverse portion of which connecting the sides of said member being provided with a notch, the sides of which are arranged substantially at right angles to the bottom thereof,
- a central cooperating member consisting of Wire having a hook in engagement with the bottom of said notch, and the outer swinging end of said central cooperating member being provided with hooks situated laterally thereof, said hooks being formed by bending the wire of said central portion, the ends or bills of said portion extending inwardly toward the longitudinal center of the said curler and the said hooks being adapted to engage the outer free ends of the said sides.
2. A hair curler comprising a U-shaped member and a central cooperating member having pivotal connection "with the transversely extending portion connecting the rear ends of the sides of said U-shaped membenthe outer end portion of the said central cooperating member being bent and extended laterally and then bent and extended in opposite direction to a point beyond the said central member and then again bent and ex tended in a direction opposite to that of the last mentioned portion to the said central member to form laterally and oppositely extending portions upon opposite sides of the said central member, which'last mentioned laterally extended portions terminate in hooks, which hooks are adapted to engage the opposite sides of said U-shaped member adjacent their forward ends.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have hereunto signed my name this 23rd day of October, A. D., 1919.
