UNITED STATES GEORGE E. GOODRIOH, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 26, 1921.
Application led November 13, 1920. Serial No. 423,956.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE E. GrooDRIoH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Faseners, of which the following is a specificaion.
This invention relates to garment rfasten ers of the type more particularly adapted for use in fastening gloves, shoes7 rubber coats and other garments; and the object of this invention is to provide such a fastener with an `adjustable part comprising two members one having a set of ratchet teeth and the other a pawl, said members being slidable one relative to the other and retained in adjusted position by means of said pawl and ratchet, one of said slidable members being permanently connected to one portion of the garment and the other member being detachably connected to another portion of the garment whereby the members of the fastener may be adjusted to draw the parts of the garment together and retain the same in adjusted position.
The nature and advantages of the invention will be better understood when the following detailed description is taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the invention residing in the combination and arrangement of parts as claimed.
In the drawings forming part of this specification, like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views and wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating my improved fastener as having its members somewhat drawn apart, one of said members being releasably connected to a catch member which is designed to be permanently secured to a garment.
Fig. 2 is a detail front View of the housing member of the fastener.
Fig. 3 is an end section on line 8-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view illustrating the slidable plate member of the fastener provided with an integral pawl-carrying tongue for engaging the ratchet teeth of the other member.
Fig. 5 is a plan view of the plate member with the operating button removed.7 illustrating the tooth-engaging pawl on the end of the spring tongue.
Fig. 6 is a perspective view showing the catch member of the fastener which is designed to be permanently connected to the edge of the garment opposite to that to which the extension part is connected.
Vithreference to the drawings, 10 designates the housing member of the fastener which is preferably made in the formof an elongated rectangular tube having an extending portion 11 at one end by which it may be attached to one portion of the garment.
The front plate 12 of this housing member is slotted as at 13 and one of the edges is provided with ratchet teeth 14.
The complemental member of the eXtensible portion of this fastener is preferably made in the form of plate 15 adapted to slide longitudinally in the housing member. The middle portion of this plate is cut out as at 16 leaving a resilient tonguenportion 17 integral at one end 18 to the plate itself while its free end 19 is provided with a pawl-shaped portion 2O to engage the said ratchet teeth of the other member with spring pressure and the outer end of this pawl is provided with a button or handle 21 by which the pawl may be disengaged from the ratchet teeth for sliding the plate backward in its housing. The outer end of this plate is provided with a downwardly-extending neck portion 22 having an enlargement or head 23 which is adapted to fit into a corresponding recess 24 in the catch member 25 of the fastener, which latter member is adapted to be permanently secured to the edge of a garment opposite to that to which the adjustable part of the fastener is secured.
In operating my improved garment fastener it is only necessary to secure the housing member to one portion of the garment and the catch member25 to another portion of the garment, and then when it is desired to draw these portions together the neck portion 22 of the sliding plate 15 is connected in the catch part 25. Then the plate is slid into its housing to draw the parts of the garment more closely together in which position it is retained by the engagement of the pawl with the ratchet 14.
When the parts of the garment are drawn too tightly together it is only necessary to apply the thumb or finger to the button 21 and by pressing it lightly it is caused to disengage the teeth 14 and permit these members to receive a relative longitudinal adjustment, and When it is desired to re lease the parts entirely it is only necessary to remove the neck portion or' the plate from the catch member 25.
The device is very simple and practical in construction and effective in its operation.
The foregoing description is directed solely toward the construction illustrated, but I desire it to be understood that I reserve the privilege of resorting to all the mechanical changes to which the device is susceptible, the invention being deiined and limited only by the terms of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A garment fastener comprising a l1ousing member adapted to be permanently tastened to one portion of a garment the outer Wall of said housing being slotted and the edge of said slot being toothed, a coperating extension plate member slidable in said housing and provided. With a spring tongue carrying a paWl for engaging said teeth to releasably retain said plate in adjusted position in said housing, and means for detachably connecting the plate member to another portion of the garment.
2. A garment fastener comprising a housing member, a plate member slidable in said housing, one of said members being provided with a pawl and the other with ratchet means for retaining them in rela tive adjusted position, means whereby one of said members may be permanently connected vto `a garment, a catch Y member adapted to be permanently connected to another portion ot the garment, and means tor detachably connecting one of said adjustable members to said catch member.
A garment fastener comprising` a housing member adapted to bel permanently fastened to one portion of a garment the outer wall of said housing being slotted and the edge ot said slot being toothed, a coperating extension plate member slidable in said housing and provided with a spring tongue having an upturned end forced by the resil iency in said tongue into engagement with said teeth to releasably retain said plate in adjusted position in its housing, an operating button on said end for moving it out oit engagement With said teeth, and means tor detachably connecting the tree end of said plate to another portion of the garment.
In testimony whereof I afiiX my signature.
