JACKSON 0. BELKNAP, OF MOBILE, ALABAMA.
IMPROVEMENT IN REVOLVING ATTACHMENTS FOR GAS-BURNERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 137,406, dated April 1, 1873 application filed February 20, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACKSON OGDEN BEL- KNAP, of Mobile, county of Mobile, State of Alabama, have invented a novel Improvement as an Attachment to GasOhandeliers, Street- Lamps, or other Lights, of which the following is a specification:
This invention has for its object the revolving of colored, transparent, semi-transparent, and opaque zones, pictures, 850., composed of stained glass, gelatine board, isinglass, or diaphane, around a gas-light globe or lamp, by means of the ascending column of heat from said light operating upon or against a series of stationary and reversible fans, flags, and cones, attached to a vertical shaft inserted downward through a metal loop bearing and resting upon a metal or glass base, re-
volving by the means stated, and having connected with it, under the fan-wheel A, one or more reflectors of any desired form, which also revolves with the shaft. Upon the upper point of this shaft, and above the fan-wheel A, is another loop of metal, with hole in the top and plates, as the one before described, into which another shaft is inserted, having a series of cone-reflectors reversibly attached; also, reversible fans or flags, which serve to move the upper shaft in the opposite direction from the fan-wheel A. Connected with the shaft or bottom of the reflector, under the fanwheel A, are three or more arms connecting with a single circle of metal, to which are attached a series of transparent zones of colors, composed of either stained glass, gelatine- ,board, or isinglass; also, opaque objects, photographs, and other pictures, all of which are both detachable and interchangeable, in order to make variable appearances in this improvement.
The upper series of fans and reflectors also serve to revolve transparent colors, pictures, &c., attached thereto, and which are also detachable and interchangeable, and move in a contrary direction to the fan-wheel A, both parts being in motion at the same time.
All the above-described parts are sustained by one or more supporters, E, which may be attached to a collar around the burner, or start from the upper edge of any gas-globe in any suitable manner, the shaft resting on a base below.
This invention is represented by four plates, as follows:
Figure 1 shows a view of one form of the improvement complete. A represents the fanwheel; B, the circle of reversible cone-reflectors with reversible fans; E, the supporters; F, the transparent zones, pictures, ac; G, the arms; H, the single circle to connect the zones or pictures, and to which they are temporarily attached. I is the reflector.
Fig. 2 represents a seriesof fixed fans, marked A.
Fig. 3 shows a series of reversible cone-reflectors, B, with reversible fans.
Fig. 4 shows the loop, plates, and screw D; also, the base of the reflector connected with the shaft 0, which is inserted point down, resting upon or in a glass plate supported by supporters E.
The devices of fan-wheels, wings, pivots, &c., are not new, nor do I claim them as such; but only desire to claim, in combination, such use of these parts as will produce the effects and results described in the foregoing.
This invention, as represented, has been described as applied to fixed gas-burners only but it is obvious that it is equally applicable to oil-lamps of every description; also, to portable and stationary signal-lanterns and light-houses generally.
Claims.
What I claim as novel, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A metallic frame, constructed substantially as shown, and adapted to hold pictures, colored plates, &c., said frame to be revolved around the light by the heated air arising from the lamp or gas-jet acting upon the reversible fans or flags A and B, as shown and described.
2. The combination of a series of revolving fans or flags and cones, fixed and reversible, marked A B, connected with shaft 0, loop, metal and glass plates, and screw D, reflector I, arms G, circle H, zones or pictures F, with the use of stained glass, gelatine-board, isinglass, and diaphane, all of which are detachable and interchangeable, each part, as shown by the drawing, arranged one above the other, both of which revolve in opposite directions at one and the same time, substantially as and for the purposes hereinbefore set forth.
