DESIGN.
1. T. MONTROSS. Stove.
No. 11,957. Patented Aug. 24,1880.
WITNESSE INVENTEIFQ I Isaac T monirass PETERS. FNOTD-LITNOORAPHEH, WASHINGTON. D C,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ISAAC T. MONTROSS, OF PEEKSKILL, NE-VV YORK.
DESIGN FOR A STOVE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 11,957, dated August 24, 1880.
Application filed June 28, 1880. Term of patent 7 years.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ISAAC T. MONTROSS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Peekskill, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented and produced a new and original Design for Stoves, of which the following is a specification.
In the accompanying drawing is given a perspective view of my newly-designed stove.
The leading feature of my design consists in a series of band-like surfaces or rings which surround the stove at intervals, indicating the divisions or chambers of the stove; but a scarcely less important feature is a metal band, either polished or plain, which surrounds the dome section of the stove at about its middle. There are also minor original features, as the corrugations surmounting the polished bandlike surfaces or rings before mentioned, the Gothic doors of the COIHbUStlOD'ChaIHbGI, the downwardlyflaring or bellmouthed shape of the wall of the ash-chamber, the approximately semi-spherical cap and its surinounting urn having the peculiarly-formed handle, and the polished knobs of the hingepintles, all of which will be definitely pointed out in the following description and appended claims.
The band-like surface indicated by the numeral 1 is the edge of the stovebase A, and on the top margin of this base is formed an annular series of horizontal corrugations, a, the ends of which give an undulating top edge to the band at. Next above the base A is the ash-chamber B, the wall of which expands or flares downwardly like the mouth of a bell, and is provided with a door, as usual. Surmounting the ash-chamber is a molding, upon which is formed the band-like surface 2, immediately above but setting back a little from the edge of which is an annular series or belt of upright corrugations, b. Mounted upon this molding is the fire-pot chamber 0, the wall of which is formed by four doors, 0, hinged to suitable posts and provided with arched openings for mica panels.
The combustion-chamber D sets upon the top edge of the chamber 0, and its lower edge projects and overhangs said chamber 0, and has formed upon its lower margin the bandlike surface 3, which indicates the dividingline between the two chambers. The chamber D contracts upwardly, and its wall is mainly formed by four doors, 01, having openings of Gothic design for mica panels, said openings having each two side ribs parallel with each other up to an arch, d, and then converging so as to meet above said arch.
Placed upon the top of chamber D is an overhanging rim bearing the band-like surface 4, and adjoining this surface 4 is the series of horizontal corrugations 0, giving the band 4 an undulating upper edge. Upon this overhanging riin sets the dome E, surrounded about mid-height by the band or belt F, bearing ornamental tracery, and also, in the present instance, the name of the stove, Ava- Ion; but this may, of course, be changed, and the tracery omitted, if desired, without varying essentially the resthetic effect of the design, the distinguishing features of which are the two ribs F, extending parallel with each other about three-quarters of the way round the dome, and then spreading apart, as at F so as to leave a space for ornamental tracery and for the name.
The band or belt F is preferably polished or bright; but that is not essential. Upon the top of the dome E is placed an overhanging rim bearing the band-like surface 5, adjoining above a series or belt of horizontal eorrugations,f, and upon this rim is placed the approximately semi-spherical cap G, ornamented by tracery and a belt or band of corrugations, g, and surmounted by the urn H. The urn H is provided with a highly-ornamental handle formed by the vertical bars 1', arranged diametrically opposite each other, projecting above and below the brim of the urn and intersected by the oblique bars k, which join at their tops 3. tablet, l bearing in the present case an ornamental letter, A, which is the initial letter of the name of the stove. The vertical bars tdo not stop at their points of intersection with the oblique or inclined bars k, bu t extend upward to about a level with the tablet l, and have ornamental upper ends, thus producing a more fanciful design than if they terminated at their point of intersection with the bars 0'. The letter may, however, be omitted or replaced by another design.
The pintles of the hinges of the doors of the sh-chamber, firepot chamber, and combustion-chamber are provided at their tops, respectively, with polished knobs m m m, which contribute greatly to the general effect of the design.
It will be understood that the band like surfaces or rings may be polished or ground or not, as desired, and the annular belts of corrugations may be polished either wholly or upon their ends only, or not polished at all, and they may be omitted without materially affecting the general client of the design as a whole.
What I claim is- 1. The design for a stove, consisting of the urn having the handle composed of the vertical bars 11 and oblique intersecting bars 10, connected at their tops, the said vertical bars being extended above the oblique bars, as shown.
2. The design for a stove, consisting of the band-like surfaces 1 2 3 4 5, surrounding the stove at intervals, and the polished metal belt or band F, surrounding the dome E, said band or belt having ribs F extending parallel with each other about three-quarters of the way round the dome, and then spreading apart, 7
leaving an enlarged space partially occupied by tracery and the name by which the stove is designated, as shown.
3. The design for a stove, consisting of the contour specifically described and shown from band-like surface 1 to band-like surface 2, inelusive.
4. The design for a stove, consisting in the combustionehaniber section shaped as shown between the band-like surfaces .5 and 4, and provided with Gothic doors with the arches d.
5. The design for a stove, consisting of the combination of shapes shown and described, from the band-like surface 1 to the top of the urn, the whole supported on legs, as shown.
6. An overhanging rim upon the top of the stove-dome bearing the band-like surface 5, the contiguous series or belt of horizontal 1a dial corrugations f, the approximately spherical cap G, and the annular series or belt of corrugations g, as shown.
7. The design for a stove, consisting of the baud-like surfaces 2 3 4 5, surrounding the stove at intervals, and the annular series or belts of corrugations a b e f, arranged with relation to the band-like surfaces 1 2 3 4 5 as shown.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
ISAAC T. MONTROSS.
