UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES W. MAGUIRE, OF BROOKLYN, NEW' YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN BLAcKlNe-BeusHi-:s
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 137,376, dated April 1, 1873; application filed October 19, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, CHARLES W. MAGUIRE, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Blacking-Brushes, of which the following is a specification:
The object ot' this invention is to strengthen and render more durable the brush used for blau-king boots and shoes; and it consists in the manner of attaching the parts of the brush together, hereinafter fully described and shown in the drawing.
Figure l represents a side view of a brush constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a cross-section ot Fig. l taken on the line fr. t
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This brush is made in two partsthe supplybrush A and the polishing-brush B. C is the handle. Usually the handle is simply laid upon the'back ofthe polishing-brush B and fastened with screws, and the supplybrush is attached to the 'handle in the same manner, a single central screw only being used. The rough usage to which such brushes are subjected soon loosens these screws, which, it' it does not render the brush worthless, makes it extremely inconvenient and awkward to handle. This diculty I remedy by slipping the parts together with dovetail joints D and E, as represented in Fig. 2. In the back of the part B I cut a dovetail groove either entirely through or only partly through the back, as seen in the drawing. In the supply'part A I cut a dovetail groove in the saine manner, and then I make a dovetail tenon on the top and on the bottom of the handle to lit these grooves.
The parts are intended to fit tightly together, and may be secured with glue, if desired. When the parts of the brush are put together in this manner they cannot get displaced by any kind ot usage, but the parts are always inplaee and in perfect working order.
The grooves and the tenons may be cut by machineryin the most rapid manner, so that the expense will be less than when the fastening is made in the old manner.
, Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A blaoking-brush having the supply-brush A, polisher B, and handle O, jointed together by dovetail tongue and groove, in the manner and for the purpose described.
CHARLES W. MAGUIRE.
