Description

w. H. MILES, Jr.
Improvement in Lather Brushes.
Patented Oct. 31,1871.
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
WILLIAM H. MILES, JR, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN LATHER-BRUSHES.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. MILES, Jr., of the city of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lather-Brushes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification.
The object of this invention is to furnish a dur able lather-brush at a small expense; and it consists in constructing the handle of the brush in one piece, and in the mode of fastening the bristles therein, as hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a longitudinal section of alather-brush with the bristles attached, the construction of the whole being according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of Fig. 1 taken on the line an 00.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the handle, which is turned from a single piece of wood, with its end bored or turned out for the bristles or brush B. These handles are ordinarily made in two parts screwed together, and frequently with a ferrule around the end for securing the bristles. By turning the handle from a block of wood, as shown, the expense is reduced to a minimum.
In fastening the bristles in the handle I glue or cement the butt-ends of the bristles together, inclosed by a string, and insert them into the handle. I then drive the pin 0 down through the center of the brush into the butt-end, as seen in the drawing. This pin expands the mass of bristles and forces the surface against the sides of the hole in the handle, thereby creating sufficient friction to hold the brush in the handle.
By making the handle of a single piece of wood, as described, and confining the bristles thereto by the pin 0, a good and durable latherbrush is produced at half the expense of those in common use.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- As a new and improved article of manufacture, a lather-brush, constructed as shown and described, consisting of the handle A, the bristles B, and the pin 0.
WM. H. MILES, JR.
