Loox ron. AUTOMOBILES. l
Application led November .29, 1919.v Serial No. $41,381.
To all fw hom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLIE C. SHET- TERLY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Franklin, in the county of Johnson and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement lin Locks for Automobiles, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a novel and effective device adapted to be operated from the dashboard of an automobile to control the fuel supply. andshut the same off entirely so as to lock the car against unauthorized use; and it is my object to provide a comparatively simple device adapted to operate with accuracy and positiveness to perform the required operation. I attain these and otherobjects of my invention bythe mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a view of the device in elevation applied-to the appropriate part of an automobile;
Fig. 2 is a detailed sectional view of the dashboard and the parts of the lock connected therewith;
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the locking valve and adjacent parts;
Fig. 4 is a side elevation of a modified form of the lock independent of the dashboard mechanism; and
Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section of the device shown in Fig. 4, with parts in elevation.
Like numerals designate like parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figs. 1-3 represent the preferred form of my invention constructed for operation from the dashboard of an4 automobile. Mounted in the dashboard is a suitable lock 4 and key 5 (a Yale lock preferably being employed). The lock shankor bolt 24 en gages in a driving sleeve 23 which is mounted in a suitable and preferably metallic tube 22 which extends into my lock casing 25. Driving sleeve 23 is composed of a series of links, making it a flexible operating member. The lower end of member 23 is attached to a suitable L=shaped plunger 6 which is operatively in contact with a pivotally mountecL pressure plate 7, which in turn is in operative Contact with a suitable bell-crank lever11, one arm of which contacts with the apex (when in closed position) of the'novel double conical valve 13 which seats in the fuel passage 1 at its point of communication with channel 2 Vwhich is connected with the carbureter in some suitable manner. A suitable channel 3 is in communication with the gas tank.
Mounted within channel 2 I provide ar suitable channel nut 17 which provides a stop for spring ,16, which presses against the stem of the double conical valve 13 to press the same normally away from its seat 14 toward bell-crank lever 11, which latter member is swingable on the pivot 12 and has its upper arm engaging diaphragm 10 and bearing against pressure plate 7 which is pivoted on thepivot 8 mounted in the threaded ring 9 of the casing member 20. I provide a suitablejoint 18 in threaded en- -gagement with member 20, and having its end 19 secured thereto in a sultable manner,
as by` rivet 21.V I may and do further pro* videV a suitable lock 26, as shown in Fig. 3, for the purpose of locking the hinged casing or housing 25 so that the mechanism of the carbureter locking valve will be inaccessible to anyone except the owner of the Referring to Fig. 1 there is shown in elevation the tube 22 which extends into the lock housing 25 which is shown in its preferred kposition relative to carbureter C and manifold M.
The operation of key 5 manually in lock 4 swings the L-shaped arm 6 in the arc of a circle, so as to bring it into or out of operative engagement with the pivotally mounted pressure plate 7, which in turn depresses or releases the bell-crank lever 11, which latter member in turn presses and seats. or releases and opens the double conical locking valve 13, which is positioned to control the supply of fuel and which is normally pressed against the contacting arm of bell-crank 11, by the tension spring 16.
In the form of the invention shown in Figs. 4 and 5 the tube 22 and flexible sleeve 23 leading to the dashboard, are omitted and lock 4 is mounted immediately in joint Specication of Letters Patent. Patentedlweb. 22, 1921. i i
ferred where the standpoint of convenience isvthe main Aconsideration and it is desired to obviate raising of the hood to lock the car.
WhatI claim is:
' l. In a lock for automobiles adapted to control the fuel supply, the combination of a lock and key, means in operative connection with the lock, a pivotally mounted arm actuated by said means, a diaphragm adjacent said arm, a bell crank lever onthe other side of the diaphragm and positioned to be actuated by the above described arm,
a conical valve in operative engagement` vnectiiig said valve casing With pipes leading to the carbureter and the fuel supply.
2. In a lock for automobiles adapted tol control the fuel supply, the Vcombination of a lock and key mounted on the dashboard of the automobile, a flexible operating member connected to and operated by the aforesaidV lock, an arm actuated by the flexible operating member, a second arm actuated by the first named arm, said second arm being in engagement with the outer surface of a diaphragm, said diaphragm operating to'prevent escape of thefuel, a valve actuating member engaging the inner surface:
Y of the diaphragm and positioned to be actuated by the arm which engages the diaphragm on its outer surface, a valve in the path of the fuel, a valve casing, and means for connecting the valve casing tothe pipes leading to the carbur-eter and the fuel sup. ply. ,Y 1 n In combination With the mechanism de# adapted to completely inclose the valve casing and valve actuating parts in proximity to the valve, and a key-operated lock mounted in said metal housing and arranged to lock said housing, whereby .toV prevent unauthorized persons from getting access to the valve easing Without first breaking they -inetal housing.
4. In a lock Vfor automobiles adapted to control the fuel supply, the combination of a lock and key mounted on the dashboard of the automobile, a flexible operating member connectedJ to and operated by the afore-Y Vand valve actuating parts are mounted, and
means for connecting said valve casing with pipes leading to the carbureter and the fuel supply. Y Y e CHARLIE C. SHETTERLY.
