Patented Feb, id, 322120 application filed April 1e, 19%. Serial No. t'fg'tt'h To all whom it may concern:
Be it fmown that l, Anonsrn N. Monronnr, a citizen of the United States or" America, residin at Lakewood, Ocean county, State of Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in 'lCallring-ll lachine Cabinets, of which the following is a lull, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvementsin portable cabinets, especially relating to phonographic apparatus, one of the objects of my invention being to provide a cabinet arranged to carry a book of records, a record plate operating mechanism therefor,
and a tone arm including a sound box, that may be detached troin the cabinet and packed within same, when not in use. Furtion being taken on a line 3-3 in Fig. 2,
the front door being illustrated as closed; and
Fig. 4 is a sectional view of the cabinet, illustrated as closed, the mechanical parts being omitted, the section being taken on line 4-t in Fig. 3.
My invention comprises a box member 5, open at one end thereof, as at 6, havlng a cover 7 and door 8 to close the open end 6, said door and cover being hinged to the box, as at 1O, 10 and 9, 9, respectively. The box 5 is divided into (in this instance) three compartments 11, 12 and 13. lo permit of such division, I provide a partltion 14 and a top member 15. The top 15, at one corner of the box, is provided with an openmg 16 spanned by a bridge member 17 to support a tone arm and its appurtenances, indicated by 18. The tone arm 18 carries a pin 19 toreleasablv engage an opening 20 in the bridge member 17. Between the top member 15 and partition 14:, l place a dividing wall 21 which extends from the rear wall 220i the box to the side wall 23, said wall being curved as at 24 to provide space, in.- dicated by 25, which will be inexcess oi the space 26, between said division wall and side wall 27 of the box. The reason for this is to provide sufficient packing space for the tone arm 18. When packed, the sound box portlonof the tone arm will be located within space 25 and the arm proper within space 26. (See Fig. 1.} Within compartment 13 the motor, indicated by 28, for the record plate 29, will be located. The wall 23 of the be 5 will be provided with an opening 30 for the insertion of a key to wlnd the motor. The space or compartment 11 is utilized to store an album, indicated by 81, to contain records.
A. further feature of the improvement resides in a pad 32 which is carried by the cover 7, and secured thereto by-screws 33. The pad 32 will be made preferably of felt or other yieldable material. The function of the pad 32 is to cover the needle cups 3& and 35, as indicated in Fig. l, when the cover 7 is closed; hence the needles cannot fall out of the cups while being transported.
When the device is to be used,-the tone arm will be applied to the bridge 1'? and the needle will, of course, contact with a record on the plate 29. When the device is to be transported, the tone arm will be removed and placed in compartment 12, the album containing the record being stored in compartment 11. The box will be provided with a handle 36 by which means it can be carried. To maintain the cover closed, I provide same with hooks 37 to engage eyes 38 carried by the sides of the box. To maintain the, door 8 closed, I provide same with a releasable latching. device 39 to engage a keeper 40 carried by the cover 7.
Having described my invention, what I claim is In a portable phonograph, a box member,
a horizontal Bartition mum at top mem-' her, a vertica. y disposed dividing wall betweensaid top member and partition, to
' provide a compartment for atone arm and a' compartment for a. motor mechanism, the space between said horizontal partition and bottom of the box being arranged for storin: an album, said vertically disposed di-
