Application filed April at,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLAUDE F. JONES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dill city, in the county of VVashita, State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements .in Fire-Extinguish ers; and i do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in firecxtinguishers, and particularly to devices of this character for extinguishing fires in cotton gins.
One object of the present invention to provide a novel and improved device whereby the gin man can quickly and easily start the feed water pump of the steam boilers in the engine room, without the necessity of notifying the engineer and asking his assistance.
Another object is to provide a novel and improved device of this character whereby hot water can be directed on the burning cotton to extinguish the fire, thisbeing more effective than cold water.
A further object is to provide a novel and improved controlling valve which simultaneously permits steam from the bo1ler to enter the steam cylinder of the pump and water to be pumped through the usual feed water heater to the gin room where the fire is located instead of to the boiler.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is an elevation 01 my improved fire extinguisher for cotton gins.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged vertical sectional view through the controlling valve.
Fig. 1 is an enlarged vertical sectional view through the check valve.
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawing, 10 represents the water cyl1nder and 11 the steam cylinder of a pump. The pump is located adjacent the boiler 12, a steam conveying pipe 13 being connected to the boiler and to the said steam cylinder for delivering steam to said cylinder to actuate the pump. A yoke-shaped branch pipe 1 1 is connected at its ends with the steam Specification of Letters Patent.

metrically opposite ports 19 and 20. Rota= table within the casing is a tapering valve plug 21 which is formed with two transverse ports 22 and 23 which are arranged to register respectively with the ports 17 and 18 and the ports 19 and 20. The intermediate portion of the yoke 14 is connected to the valve casing at the ports 18 and 20 so that steam from one arm of the yoke will be permitted to how through the port 23 and into the other arm of the yoke, and thence to the steam cylinder oi the pump. Connected with the boiler and with the water cylinder of the pump is a pipe 24 which conveys hot water to the boiler from the pump, the latter drawing it from a feed water heater as indicated.
In this pipe 24: there is interposed a valve casing 25, and in said casing is mounted a check valve 26 for preventing back pressure from the boiler. Connected to the pipe 24, and to the casing 16, at the port 19, is a pipe 27. Connected to the casing 16, at the port 17, is a branch pipe 28 which leads to the gin room, where it is connected to a hose (not shown), for use by the operator in directing water on the burning cotton.
The larger end of the valve casing 16 has screwed thereon a cap 30 for retaining the valve therewithin. The other, or smaller end of the valve is formed with a reduced stem extension 31 which projects through the smaller end of the casing, and is formed with a rectangular portion 32 for the reception of the radial crank arm 33. The smaller end of the casing 16 is externally threaded to receive thereon the threaded cap 341 and through which the said extension or stem 31 projects. Encircling the stem 31 between the cap and the crank arm 33, is a coil spring which serves to draw the valve into firm frictional contact with the interior face or bore of the casing whereby a watertight and steamtight joint is provided.
In the steam pipe 13, between the arms of the yoke or branch 14:, there is disposed the controlling valve 15, by means of which steam can be permitted to pass directly from the boiler to the engine cylinder when the engineer desires to replenish the water in the boiler.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that when a tire occurs in the gin room the operator there has only to pull the operating rod 36, which is connected to the outer end of the crank arm 83, to .open the valve 21, and permit steam from the boiler to pass to the engine cylinder. This Will result in the immediate starting up of the pump, with the consequent pumping of hot water from the I heater through the valve 21 and pipe 28 to the gin room, where the operator can water will flow into the boiler as usual. Un-
der ordinary circumstances the engineer starts the pump by opening valve 15, closing it again when the water in the boiler has been replenished. But when a fire occurs and a distant operator opens the double valve by pulling on the rod or wire 36 andstarting the pump as above described, the water will flow through the branch pipe 28 rather than toward the beiler because when the latter occurs it wouid meet with resistance. The
combination with a boiler, a steam driven.
pump, a steam supply pipe from the boiler to the pump, a pipe feeding hot water to the pump and from the pump to the boiler, and
a check valve in this pipe opening toward the boiler; of a branch pipe leading from the water pipe between the pump and check valve to the gin room, an engineers valve in said steam supply pipe, a branch steam pipe leading around this valve, a single valve for controlling bothbranch pipes, and means for operating this valve from said gm room. 7
In testimony whereof, I aifix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
CLAUDE F. JONES.
