WATER. PUMPING AND HIEA'IIN(5r4 AllIAIRAJJLUS..
Application led March 21, 1916,
To all whom t may concern.'
j Be it known `that I, CHARLES DSAXTON, a citizenV of the United States, residing at the city and county of Kalamazoo, State of Michigan, have invented Vcertain new and useful' Improvements in Water Pumping and Heating Apparatus, of which the following is` a specification. i
This invention relates to improvements in water pumping and heating apparatus.
lThe main objects of this inventionare:
First, to provide an improved combined water pumping and heating apparatus. j Second, to provide an improved combined water heating and pumping apparatus which is automatic in its operation.
Further objects, and objects relating to structural details, will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
l accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification. The invention is clearly defined and pointed `out in the claims.`
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of .my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming 'aV part of this specilicatlon,
in which: y Figure ll is an elevation of a structure einbodying the features of my invention, parts being broken away to better disclose structural details, various parts being shown-in conventional form. j
Fig. II is a detail section through the steam delivery valve.`
Fig. HI is aidetail longitudinal lsection 4through the ejector.
ln-the drawing, similar reference numerals .refer to similar parts throughout the several views. f
Referring to the drawing, the steam generating boiler illustrated is provided with V a plurality of coiled heating tubes 1 disposed within the casing 2 to be heated by the burners 3. The casing 2 is Aprovided with a dischargek flue 4 having a damper 5 therein.
Water is automatically delivered to the steam generating boiler through the supply pipe 6 which is preferably provided with a back pressure drum 7 adjacent the boiler. This water supply pi Je is, in practice, preferably connected to the water system of the city or other source of supply under pres-i Y of which is `ing is connected to the Specification of Letters Patent. i PgWQHjL-QDQ, 1LT., seriarno. 85,666. Renewed october ae, 1917. serial No. 199,212.
sure. Gas is supplied to the burners 3 through the pipe 8 controlled bythevalve 9i The vpilot burner l0 is connected bythe pipe `1l to the gas supply pipe 8 in front of the valve 9. The pilot has a regulating valve 12. y 13 represents the delivery pipe or system, such as thepiping of a house, and`is providedwith one vor more draw-01T coclsll.
15 1s the water supply pipe which, in practice, leads to a cistern or other source of supply from which the water is to be drawn. The pipe is provided with a check valve 15. rllhe pipe 15 is connected to the body member 16 of an ejector, the nozzle 17 arrangedto deliverf to the ven"- turi 19, as shown in Fig; IH; j
The steam delivery pipe 20 is connected to the nozzle 17 of the ejector. The act-ion of an ejectorV is well. known and therefore isnot enlarged upon herein. The'deliver'y pipe20' of4 thev boiler is preferably provided with a valve 2l arranged within the casing 22 and provided with a stem 23 with which thearm 2 -1fon the rock shaft 25 engages.
This rock shaft is connected by the link27 to the thermostat actuated leverv or member 28, the thermostat being disposed in the section 20 of the generator delivery pipe between the valve 21 and .the boiler. details ofthe thermostatare not illustrated as' suitable thermostats are known in the art and the structural details of the thermo stat form n0 part of my present invention.
The fuel sure actuated means subject to the pressure ofthe fluid in. the delivery pipe I3.
In thev structure illustrated this actuating means comprises the casing `29U`havingf` a` diaphragm 30, therein. Uneside of the casdeliv'ery pipe 13 by The Adiaphragm. is provided the pipe 31. i y
projecting through the other with a stem 32 valve 9 is controlled by'presf4 sideof the casing` 29 andoperatively connectedto a lever 33 mounted at`34. i
A spring 35 is connected to the bracket 86 on the pipe 20 and actson the diaphragm against the pressure within the casing.
A bar 87 is connected to the lever 33"and ,j
slidablysupported by thebracket l36` and a second nsimilar `bracket v38. This barf'is `notchedat 39 to engagethe `arm 40 on the stem of the valve `9 so thatthe valveis `opened and closed by this pressureaetuated member.Y vtAspring/.41 holds the arm 4G in` position to be engaged by the bar. The nbar 37 is provided With an extension 42 connected to the arm 43"on--the-fspindle 4'4vof the damper so that the damperis automatically opened and closed "vvhen'tlie vgas is turned off and on. This is of advantageinV Vie that it prevents circulation of air through the boiler casingvvhen the burners are cut off thereby preventing unduefcooling of the genera-tor.
' pipe.k The steamfpas'sing through the ejector :not only draws ythe Water through lthe supply .pipe lcarrying Vit into'tlie delivery pipe, but'alsofheats'theuvater so that I secureby thisarrangementof parts a combined pump and Water heating apparatus. When 'the dravvv od cock is closed pressure onfthe deli-very A,piperises until the gas valve .-is losed'f through the pressure actuated mechanism. -'The extent to which the cock .14 `is opened determines the temperature of Ythev Water. Thea-capacity ofthe several pipes Vis preferably 'suchl that 'if the cockrbe fully opened cold Water may be drawn through thesame system. or delivery pipe.
Parts o'fj'the apparatus areshovvn inthe accompanying. drawing mainly in conventional lferm as. my present invention does not lrelate to.y the, structural details thereof Y vandfsuitab-le V'mechanisms are linovvn. improved pumping and vWater heatdisci;
