HOLDING AND DISPLAY RACK FOR LITERATURE, MUSIC, AND ART.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, NnLs A. LUNnnnRc, a citizen of the United States, residing at Moline, in the county of Rock Island and State of Illinois, a carpenter, have invented new and useful Holding and Display Racks for Literature, h Iusic, and Art, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to holding and display racks having oscillating display leaves which fold, which display leaves by means of springs attached thereto, are calculated to hold displays of literature, music and art on either side, and folded may be swung to the wall, or opened into the room, and the objects of my invention are to provide a means of displaying literature, art and music for inspection or sale in large quantities without injury in handling, or any part hiding the other, and of putting the same away, protecting it from dust, dirt and flies, without handling, and of utilizing space.

I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:

nent structure 15, or to a slat not shown attached to the wall, by ordinary angle brace means 14 and pivot spike bolt 6 at the top end of oscillating post 1.

The apex of the angle attachment 14: at the top is provided with boxing means 14 for insertion of a journaled pivot spike bolt 6, provided in the top end of oscillating upright post 1, which may be made of wood or iron, and constitutes the axle of my machine, for the purpose, in connection with other pivot means 7, provided at its bottom end, of holding it in perpendicular position and supporting the leaves and braces attached thereto.

Pivot bolt 6 is an ordinary spike bolt driven into a hole, not shown, in the top end of oscillating post 1, and is held in place by a plate washer 5 and a ferrule 4, and is held within journal 14- by nut means 6.

The bottom of oscillating post 1, being likewise provided with pivot spike bolt 7, plate 5 and ferrule 4i, excepting the pivot spike bolt 7 at bottom is not provided with a nut but is fitted in a plate 1t? secured to the floor 16 or to a slat not shown, securely attached upon the floor, so that when the oscillating post 1 is attached in position it will oscillate upon its pivots.

Conveniently near to and upon the ends of oscillating post 1, I provide screw nut clip means 3, for the purpose of binding a pair of angle supports 2 to the said oscillating post 1, as shown in Figs. 3, 6 and 7.

Angle supports 2 are two in number, each composed of ordinary angle iron and each having their respective ends bent forming obtuse angles in conformity to each other, as shown in Fig. 10, each presenting a hori zontal surface and a perpendicular side. The horizontal surfaces are provided with a plurality of holes 2, the perpendicular sides also provided with two holes 2 which latter holes are for the introduction of the ends of screw nut clip means 3, in securing the said angle braces 2 upon the top and bottom ends of oscillating post 1, and angle supports 2 are for the purpose of mounting between said angle supports 2 of a plurality of display leaves 8.

In securing the angle supports 2 upon the oscillating post 1, the middle part of the angle support 2 is placed with its perpendicular flange against the face of the post 1 and held in place by means of clip 3, which fits securely around oscillating post 1, said angle support 2 thus presenting a flat fitting surface to said oscillating post 1 between the holes 2", of said angle support 2, its ends being bent at acute angles from the face toward the back of said oscillating post 1, for the purpose of giving a wider spread to display leaves 8, when mounted thereon.

The horizontal surface of the angle sup port 2 is'provided with multiple holes i for the ins .rtion of the pivots ll and iii J of leaf supports 11. and 12, as shown in Fig. 3, when the same are attached'to the respective top and bottom ends of oscillating dis play leaves 8 mounted between angle supports 2.

Leaf supports ll. and 12 are respectively provided at one end with pivots, the pivot of one thereof, for sake of safety, being provided with a screw thread and nut ill to secure the same in hole 2 of angle support 2, the other being plain, said leaf sup ports 11 and 12 being provided w th multiple holes 11 and 12 in their s cc for securing them by ordinar bolt or screw means, not shown, to oscillating display leaves 8, as shown in Fig. 3.

Oscillating display leaf 8 composed of a thin center surface '8" set edgewise co1nposed of any firm light substance preferably beaver board and has its edges securely bound by and rabbeted into a band frame strip 8 of any desired nuiterial in such manner as to form a right-angular band frame around the center surface 8', display ing its right-angular projection on. one or both sides of such center surface S as desired, for the purpose of holding the center surface 8" in rigid position, and of furni ing means for securing the oscillating play leaf 8 upon and between the leaf sup ports 11 and 12, and of providing means for the better securing upon said center surface, 8' of divisional strips 8 as shown in Fig. 3. I

Each oscillating display leaf 8, as desired is provided upon either side of its thin center surface 8 with one or more divisional. strips 8 of any desired style preferably of a width corresponding to the protruding width of the flanged edge of bandframe strip 8 and of a length corresponding to the perpendicular width of center surface 8, and arranged perpendicularly across said center surface 8" and right-angularly disposed thereto, and spaced from each other perpendicularly upon said center surface 8 as desired. Said divisional strips 8 are placed upon said center surface 8 for the purpose of rendering the same more rigid, and for the further purpose of dividing the center surface 8 into sections as desired, corresponding to the wishes of p the owner with reference the matter de sired to have displayed, and being secured to band frame 8 by screw means not shown and to said center surface 8 bybrad or screw means not shown, their spacing may be changed as desired.

Between divisional strips and between band frame 8 and divisional strips 8 as shown in Figs. 3, e and 5 are provided upon center surface 8 multiple spring holding devices 9 and 10; spring 9, being a special bottom spring, as shown in Fig. 11; springs 10 are arrangedin pairs above springs J, and above each other. Springs 9 are cured to band 8 at their bottom ends by mortise and screw means not shown. Springs 10 are secured to center surface 8", at their lower ends by rivet means 10 inserted in holes 10 and all are made of light narrow, thin strips of spring metal, their tops bending outward at 10" to admit the insertion of display matter without tearing the same, spring 10 having an outwardly disposed offset 10 in the middle and an outwardly disposed right-angular offset 10", below the same in such manner as to ca 1 the top 10 to lie firmly against the oflset l0" of such centersurface 8", when the bottom ends 10 of said spring holding device 10 is securely attached to said center sin-face S" as previously shown. Bottom spring 9 has a right-angular bent end 9 provided with a flanged extremity 9 and provided with screw holes 9 and has its top bending outwardly at 9, for the, purpose of freely'admitting the display matter. In operation the tops of springs 9 and the tops of springs 10 excepting the upper row, rest upon the offset 10"" of the oppositely ar ranged springs. all for the purpose of adding tension in holding literature. music and art, close and securely in display upon such display leaf 8. in any desired position, which arrangement is disclosed in Figs. 3, 4, and 7 It will. be observed that the display leaves 8, when so arranged and mounted may e):- tend compactly out into a room as shown in Fig. 1., or may be compactly swung with their side to the wall as shown. in Fig. 2 or.

may be swung out opened like a book as shown in Flg. 3, and as many as may be desired may be mounted, andtheir contents disclosed, or protected from the dust by lll) ing at opposite corners of one of its sides, securely attached display leaf braces each brace having oppositely disposed pivot ends engagingly operating in corresponding holes provided in the horizontal surfaces of angular braces respectively supported upon the oscillative post; a band frame securely attached to its edges; one or more perpendicular divisional slats right-angularly disposed, regularly arranged securely attached to its center surface and to said band frame; a plurality of springs arranged in pairs securely attached upon the center surface of said display leaf between perpendicular di-- visional slats and perpendicular band frames, for the purposes specified.

3. A holding and display rack consisting of an oscillative post supported at its upper end by a wall bracket, at its lower end by a flat plate washer; a pair of angulate leaf braces secured thereto by clip means; a multiplicity of oscillative display leaves relatively mounted upon said angulate leaf sup ports, by pivot means provided on the corresponding corners of one of their edges; frame means for binding the edgesof said display leaves; means for dividing the center surface of the display leaves into sections; spring means for securing literature,

music and art products upon such center surface within such sections; the leaves capable of being opened and closed like a book and oscillated from side to side by means of said oscillative angulate leaf support and pivots, for the purposes specified.

l. In a holding and display rack having oscillative display leaves; a display leaf having a center surface perpendicularly divided into spaces, each of the spaces having a pair of bottom spring means secured thereon and plural pairs of other spring means disposed thereon arranged at regular intervals in alinement above said bottom springs, the leaves mounted upon brackets secured upon an oscillative post, for the purposes specified.

5. In a holding and display rack having oscillative display leaves provided with spring means for holding advertising matter thereon; including a bottom spring having its top end outwardly curved, an outwardly disposed right-angular offset near its bottom end, and a plurality of holes provided in its bottom end for its attachment by other means to said display leaf; a top spring having its top end outwardly curved, an outwardly disposed offset arranged midway of its perpendicular length, another right-angular offset outwardly disposed near itsbottom end and a plurality of holes provided in its bottom end for its attachment by other means to said display leaf, for the purposes specified.

6. In a holding and display rack, an oscillative post perpendicularly disposed, provided at either end with a journaled pivot siike bolt, inserted securely therein; the spi e bolt at the top end provided beyond the journaled portion at its extremity with screw threads and a nut; said post also provided at either end engaging said spike bolts with a plate washer; said post also provided at either end with a ferrule band adjacent to said plate washer, securely attached to said post; said post also provided with flanged offsets outwardly disposed at either end, supporting at either of said ends between said flanged portion and said ends, band clip means having screw thread ends and a corresponding screw nut; said post also provided at either end between the respective flanged portions and the pivots and securely attached by band clip means connectedly attached by nut means, with plural angle supports, having each a hori- Zontal and a perpendicular side, the middle of the perpendicular side fitted flush to said post secured thereto through holes provided therein by band clip means, the ends of said angle supports acutely angulated, said angles rearwardly disposed facing each other; and in such manner as to oscillate with and actuate as a part of said oscillating post, all for the purpose of engagingly supporting upon said post, of a plurality of display leaves, substantially as shown.
