UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
'; ETTORE VIANI, OF MILAN, ITALY.
IGNITION-MAGNETO FOR INTERNALCOMBUSTION ENGINES.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, E'r'ronn Vnxnr, a subject of the Kine of Italy, resident of Milan, Italy, 3 Via (Iastelvetro, in the Kingdom of Italy, have invented new and useful improvements in Ignition-Magnetos "for Internal-Coinbustion Engines, of which the following is a specification.
The invention'relates to an improvement in internal combustion engine magnetos, by means of which'the timing of the ignition can be conveniently adjusted and the makeand-break device can be readily taken oil for inspection and cleaning of the contacts.
One method of carrying the invention into efiect is illustated by way of example in the annexed drawing, in which:
Figure 1 shows the magneto in longitudinal section;
Fig. 2 is a cross section through 2-2 in Fig. 1';
Fig. 3 is a cross section through 3-3 in Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 shows the locking device for the revolving iron shield.
In the casing S, inside of which project the pole-shoes It of the magnets M, is arranged the iron shield 13 which can be rotated about a desired angle according to the timing conditions and consists of two cast iron segments that are held together by two brass end rings T-U whose external diameter is equal to the internal diameter of into position the make-and-break device is the casing, the rings thus suiting the casing. Within the shield B revolves the armatureE.
The front ring T carries the revolving locking arrangement A, which actuates a spring-loaded bolt K '(Figs. 3 and 4). The
bolt K can lock the makdand-break C in a corresponding recess C of the ring T or release it therefrom, and this arrangement permits of the make-and-break device being readily taken out for inspection and cleaning of the contacts. In order to replace it first put in place laterally, as shown in dotted lines by Fig. 3, in such a way that its lower end embraces a pin J and can pivot thereon; after this, by giving it a stroke with the thumb, the whole is caused to pivot about the pin J until the hole Q, is brought exactly opposite the bolt K. The beveled end-surface of the spring loaded bolt K permits of the bolt sliding backward, thus permitting the piece C to enter the recessC;

then due to the action of the spring the bolt K is forced into the hole Q, thereby making the make-and-break C fast with the ring.
I) is one of the contacting members and it comprises the platinum-plated screw and a carbon-brush bearing through a hole N in the ripg T on the slip ring fixed to the armature L. F is the other contacting member having the platinum-plated screw closing the contact that is connected up to the body of the magneto and therewith to the primary winding; the contact of the screw F with the screw D, has the purpose of short circuiting the primary winding in the well known manner. The rupture of the short circuit takes place when F, which is arranged at the end of a lever pivoting about 0, is oscillated by a cam G made of insulating material and mounted on the armature shaft at the opposite end P of the same lever.
The speed reduction for the distributer is obtained by means of a pinion L keyed on the rotor shaft and meshing with the internal teeth of a circular rack I revolving in a ball-race hearing. In order to realize a smooth and noiseless running the pinion L and the internally toothed circular rack I are fitted with helical teeth; the circular rack I is solid with the brush-holder V which makes the contacts on the distributer H secured to the casing.
Z is the crank-handle by means of which the cast iron. shields B are angularly adjusted in order to adjust the timing of the An ignition magneto for internal combustion engines, comprising an armature shaft, brass rings coaxial therewith and connecting the ends or" segment-shaped cast iron shields for varying the timing of the ignition, one of said rings having an opening therein, a make-and-break device locked in said opening by a spring-loaded bolt when the make-and-break device is in operation, said bolt being beveled so as to move autoning in a ball-race bearing in said casing 10 and solid with the brush holder of the distributer and cooperatin with said pinion.
In testimony whereo I afiix my signature.
