Description

J. J. MACAULEY.
` 0| L BURNER.
APPLICATION HLED JUNE 2l. i920A 1,364,637 Batented Jang 4, 1921.
UNITED STATES PATENT DEFICE.
JOHN J. MACAULEY, 01E' GRAND RAPIDS, MIGHIGAN.
OIL-BURNER.
Application filed June 21, 19,20.
To all whom/t may concern.'
Be it known that I, JOHN` J. MAcAULnY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Grand Ra ids, in the county of Kent and State of ichigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oil-Burners; and I do hereby decla-re the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invent-ion, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an oil burner, being particularly concerned with a burner vfor the heavier hydrocarbon oils in which the oils may be heated and generated into a gas and properly mixed with air after which the same may be burned, the heat of combustion serving to generate the oil thereafter burned into a gas for `further combustion. It is a primary object and purpose of the present invention to Ymake a burner ofthis character of few parts and one very simply constructed yet one particularly effective in service. Many other objects and purposes will appear as, understanding .of the invention is had rom'the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which,
Figure 1 as a vertical section taken centrally through the burner, and
Fig.. 2 is a horizontal section taken on the line 2 2, of 1 and looking in the direction indicated by the arrows.
Like reference characters refer to like parts in the two figures of the drawing.
In the construction of the burner, a hollow vertical sleeve 1 is used in which at its upper end a number of openings 2 are made, there being four shown in Ythe drawing, though this particular number of openings is not absolutely essential. The sleeve is made from any suitable metal and at its lower end is. turned outwardly and upwardly making an annular depression above the outturnedportion 3, and terminating in a horizontally(positioned-flange 4 which is adapted to rest on therplate 5 in .which an opening iscut into which the Ilower portion of the burner may be inserted as shown. A downwardly extendinglannular lip 6 `is'made integral with the sleevebeing slightly larger in diameter asy shown a-nd intoi-the same an air pipe maybe insertedas indicated in dotted "lines for, =carrying airunder pressure to thesleeve. The forced air draft vis no tfneces- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 4, 1921.
Serial No. 390,362.
sary, however, and the pipe indicated in dotted lines need not be used if not desired.
A head including a horizontal plate 7 and a downwardly extending sleeve 8 is placed over sleeve 1 being located by a bead 7a which iits within the upper end of said sleeve 1. The sleeve 8 extends to a poi-nt a short distance above the outwardly extending part 3 and is slightly enlarged adjacent its lower end as indicated at 8a. INear where it joins with the plate 7, sleeve 8 is provided wit-h a plurality of openings 9 made in spaced apart relation through the sleeve and at a lower point, substantially at the point of enlargement of the sleeve, with a plurality of spacedv apart openings 10. A conical generator sleeve 11 is placed around the sleeve 8 joining therewith at its lower end and extending upwardly and outwardly to the outer edges of the plate 7 as shown. On its inner side member 11 is formed with a continuous rib 12 thereby forming an annular recess back of the rib and between it and said member.
An oil supply pipe 13 extends vertically through the sleeve 1 and connects with a cross pipe 14: which passes through the openings 2 and through sleeve 8, the ends ther of coming above the recess yback of the rib 12. Oil is carried through a pipe 15fto the pipe 13 and is controlled in passage by a valve 16 opened and closed by operating the wheel 16a.
rIhe air passes upwardly through sleeve 1 and out through the openings 2 to the space between sleeves 1 and 8 and thence downwardly. Gas from the oil passes out through the openings 10 and mixes with the air and the mixture is burned at the mouth at 17 of the mixing chamber made by the enlargement of the sleeve 8 at its lower end. This creates a suction and the enlargement of the sleeve at 8a 'is in eil'ect a Venturi construction aiding in creating suction and drawing the gases through openings 10 into the mixing chamber. The flame from burning is directed upwardly along the outer sides of the member 11 heating the same and causing, oil coming in contact therewith to be heated to a high deg-ree of temperature and generated into a gas. At the start,
when the burner is to be lighted oil may be i from the ends of pipe 14 is delivered into the annular recess back of rib 12 and flows evenly over the top thereof on to the generator member 11 whereby a uniform distribution of oil and complete generation thereof into gas is had. If at any time it is desired to clean out the interior of the generating chamber, the same may be done by removing the plugs 18 threaded through the plate 7 as shown.
This burner is of very simple construction and made at a very low cost of manufacture, requiring little or no machining and made chiefly from simple castings. In practice it has proven its 'complete success. The appended claims define the invention and I consider myself entitled to all forms of construction falling within their scope.
I claim:
1. In combination, a central vertical sleeve having openings therein at its upper end, said sleeve being extended outwardly and upwardly at an angle at its lower end, a burner head comprising an upper horizontal plate and a depending sleev'e placed over the first sleeve, said second sleeve being spaced from the iirst sleeve and the plate resting on the upper end of the first sleeve, said second sleeve having a plurality of upper and lower openings therethrough, a conical shaped generator member disposed around the second sleeve and extending upwardly from the lower end of the second sleeve to the vouter edges of the plate, said generator member being formed with an annular rib on its inner side, an oil carrying pipe passing upwardly through the first sleeve, and a second pipe connected to the upper end of the oil pipe, the ends thereof coming above the rib on the generator member, substantially as described.
