Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed May 29, 1920. Serial No. 385,269.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES W. HORNE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Centerville, in the county of Wayne and $tate of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Drive-Gate, of which the following is a specification.
It is one object of this invention to provide novel means for operating a sliding gate, another object of the invention being the provision of novel means for holding in place on the gate a rack which cooperates with a pinion to effect a sliding movement of the gate.
It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the invention appertains.
With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the de tails of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that, within the scope of what is claimed, changes in the precise embodiment of the invention shown can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 shows in side elevation, a device constructed in accordance withthe invention; Fig. 2 is a section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a fragmental top plan of the gate; and Fig. 4 is a section on the line 44 of Fig. 1.
The numeral 1 denotes a main frame comprising outer posts 2, inner posts 3 and a top bar 4 connecting the posts 2 and 3. A guide 5 is provided, the same including posts 6 connected by a cap 7. The posts 6 carry a shaft 8, a roller 9 being journaled on the shaft between the posts 6. A shaft 10 is journaled in the posts 2 and 3 of the main frame and is provided at its ends with any suitable means 11 whereby it may be rotated. A pinion 12 is secured to the intermediate portion of the shaft 10 and is located between the inner posts 3 of the main frame 1. Braces 14 may connect the inner posts 3 of the main frame 1 with the posts 6 of the guide 5. The numeral 15 marks a striking post comprising horizontally spaced members 16 connected at their upper ends by a cap 17 A gate is provided, and the gate may be constructed variously. The gate may mclude inner end posts 18 and outer end posts 19. The ends of a top rail 20 are received between the posts 18 and between the posts 19. The ends of a bottom rail 21 are received between the posts 18 and between the posts 19. The gate includes any desired number of intermediate rails 22 having their ends received between the posts 18 and between the posts 19. Hanger strips 23 are located on opposite sides of the top and are secured thereto. Fillers 24 are disposed on opposite sides of the top rail 20 and extend between the hanger strips 23 and the posts 18 and 19. A spacer 25 is located between the hanger strips 23. Downwardly and inwardly inclined supports 26 are provided, the outer ends of the supports being located between the posts 19 and between the posts 18, the inner ends of the supports being disposed in abutting relation, as indicated at 27 and being received between the hanger strips 23, the ends of the supports abutting against the lower end of the spacer 25. Guard strips 28 are secured to the sides of the supports 26 and abut at their outer ends against the inner edges of the posts 18 and 19. The inner ends of the guard strips 28 abut, as indicated at 29, and are disposed below the lower ends of the hanger strips 23. Plates 30 are secured to the hanger strips 23 and are secured at their lower ends to the ends 29 of the guard strips 28. The guard strips 28 and the supports 26 define a groove wherein is located a rack 31 secured to the supports 26, the rack slanting inwardly and downwardly from its ends toward its intermediate portion. The rack 31 has angular ends 32 overlapped on the ends -of the supports 26 and attached thereto by securing elements 33. The rack 31 coiiperates with the pinion 12 on the shaft 10. Uprights 34 are connected to the bottom rail 21 and to the intermediate rails 22. An upright 35 is disposed between the uprights 34 and is connected to the rails 21 and 22. Fillers 36 are located on opposite sides of the bottom rail 21, the fillers extending be tween the posts 18 and 19, on the one hand, and the uprights 34 on the other hand, and between the uprights 34 on the one hand the uprights 35 on the other hand. Bars 37 are disposed parallel to the supports 26, the other ends of the bars being received between the posts 19, and between the posts 18. The inner ends of the bars 37 rest on the uppermost intermediate rail 22 and extend between the uprights 35. Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is In a device of the class described, a frame; a shaft journaled in the frame; means for rotatingetheshaft; asmguide; a gate; an arm on the gate and pivotall; received in the guide for vertical" swinging movement; a rack on the gate, the-rack-having depending teeth; the rack slantin downwardly from its-ends to its interme' iate portion; and a pinion on the shaft, thepinionbeing located beneath the'rack and cooperating with the teeth.
