To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, IRA I). BATE, a citizen of the United States, residing at VJ est Jefferson, in the county of Madison and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Farm-Gates, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to farm gates and is particularly directed to the improvement of a structure for preventing sagging. Frequently, after the end posts are set and the gate hingedly mounted thereon, these end posts give, due to the weight of the gate and allow its front end to come into resting con tact with the ground. It is at times such as this, that my invention is particularly valuable, in that it permits the front end of the gate to be elevated or adjusted to make it clear the ground. Another advantage of this type of structure is that the front end of the gate may be elevated to a considerable extent to permit small stock to pass thereunder while the full grown and larger stock is prevented from passing therethrough.
My invention resides essentially in the mechanism whereby the gate may be securely held in any of its various positions of adjustment. This is accomplished principally by the cooperation of a toothed mem ber and an engaging member for these teeth, whereby the gate may be held in any of its various positions of adjustment.
The preferred embodiment of my invention is shown in the accompanying sheets of drawings, in which similar characters of reference designate corresponding parts, and in which: 1

In Fig. 1, the end post to which the gate is hingedly mounted, is designated by the reference numeral 1 and carries hinged pintles 2. The gate itself is formed of a plurality of longitudinally extending rails 3, held in their assembled relation by means of a plurality of vertically arranged braces 4. These vertical braces are preferably of channel shape and are arranged in pairs to clamp the rails between them by means of the bolts 5. pass directly through the rails, but on opposite sides thereof, so that the channel brace members may be drawn into holding engagement with the rails themselves. There is also provided a pair of diagonal channel shaped brace members 6 which are pivoted at their upper ends to one of the vertical braces 1- by means of the bolt shown at 7 and which are also pivoted to the lower end of another of the vertical braces by means of a bolt shown at 8. Preferably, these diagonal braces are also pivotally connected to the intermediate vertical brace, by means of a pivot bolt shown at 9. The lower end of the gate is provided with a hinge rod 10, which is pivotally secured to the means of a pivot bolt 11 and is also loosely and pivotally connected to the diagonal braces 6 by means of a pivot bolt 12.
The outer or upper ends of the diagonal braces are crimped, as is shown at 13 in Fig. 3, a distance, so that these diagonal braces are approximately in the same plane with the faces of the rails 3. The upper ends of these diagonal braces carry a pair of spaced toothed members 14 having teeth 15 along their lower edges. These toothed members are connected to the braces by means of the upper pivot bolt 7 and also by means of a bolt 16. It is by means of these toothed members that the gate is held in any position of adjustment, these toothed members cooperating with the upper hinge reach rod 17. This reach rod is provided with a pair of side plates 18 connected thereto by means of the bolts 19 and 20, these bolts passing through the side members 18 and also through the outer end of the reach rod 17. It is the forward bolt 20 which is designed to coiiperate with the teeth 15 of the members 14. Reference to Figs. 3 and 4 will show that these toothed members 14 lie against the inside faces of the diagonal braces 6 and that the side plates 18 are mounted on the outside of these diagonal braces 6. The reach rod 17 carrying the bolts 19 and 20 is located centrally between the members 14 and the parts are made of a size to all be in loose engagement with each other, so that the bolt 20 may be made to engage any of the teeth 15.
In operation, should it be desired to adjust the front end of the gate, all that is necessary is that this front end be lifted, this play being'permitted because of no rigid connection between the vertical braces and the rails 3. After this end has been raised, the bolt 20 carried by the reach rod 17 is seated in the corresponding tooth .15, whereupon the weight of the front end of the gate is transferred to the end post 1 through the reach rod 17 and the hinge pintle 2.
In view of the similarity in construction and arrangement of the framework of farm gates now in general use and the framework of the gate herein shown and described, it will be understood that my improved means for regulating the angle of support of the gate with reference to the ground, may be readily applied to what may be termed the standard gate construction.
What I claim, is:
