GATE.
To all whom z't may concern:
Be it known that l, ARTI-inn W, Knooiv, a citizen of the United States, residing at Glenellyn, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new .and useful Improvements in Gates, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to farm and other gates, and its object is to provide a strong and durable gate which is so constructed, braced and hung that it is effectually prevented from sagging.
rlhe object stated is attained by means of a novel combination and arrangement of p arts to be hereinafter described and claimed, and in order that the same may be better understood, reference is had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification.
In the drawing a perspective view of the gate is shown.
The gate is made up of longitudinal top and bottom rails and 6, respectively, vertical end rails 7 and 8, respectively, intermediate vertical rails 9, a diagonal brace bar 10 extending between the end rails, and diagonal brace bars 11 extending between the end rails and the adjacent intermediate vertical rails. rlliese parts may be made of wood or metal firmly fastened together, and they may also be wired up to prevent the passage of small stock. The vertical end bars and the intermediate bars are arranged in pairs, and the top and bottom bars, as well as the brace bars, are secured therebetween.
The gate is hinged to a post 12 by suitable hinges 13 the coacting members of which are fastened to the post 12 and to the end rail 7, respectively.
To prevent the gate from sagging the following systern of braces is provided:
The intermediate vertical rail 9 next to the end rail 7 rises a short distance from the top rail 5 to form a strut which carries at its upper end an eye 14 to which are gonnected brace or tie members 15 and 16, re-

spectively, which may be chains, cables orv other suitable devices.
0n the top of the hinge post 12 is fastened a bracket member 17 supporting an upstanding pivot pin 18 on which is mounted, to turn freely thereon, a hinge member 19. One end of the brace 15 is connected to the eye 111 and the other end is connected to the member 19. rIhe brace 15 is provided with a turnbuckle 20 or other suitable tensioning device. rlllie pivot 18 is in alinement with the axis of the hinges 13 of the gate.
At the top of the gate, adjacent to the forward end thereof, is secured a hook 21. @ne end of the brace 1G is attached to this hook and the other end is attached to the eye lil. The brace 16 is also provided with a. turnbuclrle or other suitable tensioning device 22.
1t will be seen. from the foregoing that the gate is securely braced by the members 15 and 16, and prevented from sagging. The connection of the inner end of the brace 15 is with the post 12, so that the' weight of the gate is taken o the hinges 13, and as said connection is pivoted it swings freely with the gate when the latter opens or closes.
l claimzl The combination with a gate and a post to which it is hinged, of a strut rising from the top of the gate intermediate its ends,
tensioning'members connected to the strut and extending in opposite directions therefrom, one of said members being anchored to the forward end of the gate, a bracket member supported by the post, a pivot pin carried by the bracket 'member independent of and in alinement with the axis of the gate hinge, and a hinge member mounted von the pivot pin to turn thereon, to which member the other tensioning member is connected. l
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
ARTHUR W. KROON.
