INDEX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 21, 1920.
Application filed July 9. 1919. Serial No. 309,621..
7'0 (177 w/mm it may concern ie it known that 1, JAMES H. RAND, citizen of the United States of America, and resident of North Tonawanda, in the county of Niagara and State of New York, have invented new and usefullmprovements in Indexes, of which the following is a specification.
In overlapping index devices as heretofore constructed, of the kind having a series of overlapping. spaced. card holders each supporting a rem'ovable insert card or sheet, it has been the practice touse insert cards or sheets of substantially the same area as the holders and to apply one insert card or sheet to each holder. Thus the space for entries on each insert card or sheet was limited to the area of the holder. The principal object of the present invention is to increase the capacity of the insert sheets without increasing the size of the holders. This is accomplished by providing an insert Sheet of substantially the combined area of two ad jacent holders, and mounting the same folded between the opposed faces of adjacent holders, whereby when one holder is swung away from the next holder underneath, the insert sheet will be opened and its entire surface exposed and made available for use.
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate a preferred embodiment of the invention,
Figure l is a front view of part of the index in normal or closed position;
Fig. 2 is a front view showing one of the swinging holders lifted away from the holder underneath to open and expose the insert sheet held between the pair;
Fig. 3 is a side or edge view showing the relation between two adjacent holders and the insert sheet in closed position; and
Fig. 4 is a similar edge view showing the relation of the parts open.
The frames may be of any usual or preferred construction, and as herein shown consists of a back A of sheet metal, having inwardly bent side flanges a, a, forming opposed channels to engage the ends of the supporting bars or other supporting projections of the swinging holders. As herein shown the supporting members consist of bars 1', of Bristol board or other suitable material, arranged side by side with their ends in the channels of the frame. These bars fllSO'CO11- stitute the spacing means by which the hold ers are positioned in overlapped, spaced relation with their free margins exposed one beyond another.
Hinged to one edge of each bar so as to swing thereon, is a holder 2 which may consist of a card or sheet of cardboard or other suitable material, having a pocket or lip on each side of its free margin. Said pockets as herein shown are made of a strip of transparent sheet celluloid folded around the edge of the holder 2, the front fold 3 forming a pocket and sheath on the front of each holder, and the rear fold 4 forming a pocket 'or sheath on the rear of each holder. This celluloid strip may be attached to the card 2 in any suitable way. the mode herein shown by way of illustration consisting in a pair of loops or links 5 ofwire one end of each passing through the body of the card 2 and the other end passing through registering holes 6 in the body of the card 2 and in one at least of the folds of the celluloid strip.
Between each of the several pairs of adjacent holders is a removable insert sheet folded upon itself to form two leaves 7 and 8, hinged on a fold 9. Said leaves overlie respectively the opposed faces of two adjacent holders. The leaf 7, overlying the under side of the outer holder of an adjacent pair of holders, is held at its free margin by the rear pocket or sheath 4 of that holder, and the leaf 8, overlying the front side of the under holder of the pair, is held at its free margin by the front pocket or sheath 3 of that holder.
The under leaf 8 of the insert sheet is broader than the outer leaf My an amount corresponding to the spacing of the holders so that in closed or normal position the margin of the insert will be exposed through the transparent pocket 3 to display names or other indexing or identifying characters appropriate to the use to be made of the device. The hinge fold 9 of the insert sheet preferably registers with the hinge 10 of the upper or outer holder so that when the outer holder of a pair is lifted or swung away from the under holder the leaf 7 will swing on substantially the same axis. and the insert sheet will in all positions retain its proper relationship to the pair of holders which support it.
The lower or wider leaf 8 also preferably has a second hinge fold 11 registering with the hinge of the under holder of the pair, so thatwhen such under holder is lifted or swung away from the frame to expose the next insert sheet in the series lying between lllltl the holder in question and the next underlying holder, the leaf. 8 will bend on line 11 without buckling the leaf as would occur if the latter were hinged only at 9.
The corners'of the leaf 7 are cut away at 12 to fit between the fasteners 5.
With the present invention each insert sheet, covering two holders when opened out, has substantially double the size and capacity of insert cards applied toand covering only one holder as heretofore made. The insert sheets may be ruled or entitled for entries of any desired character, and by reason of their greatly increased capacity it is possible to put the index to uses demanding more voluminous and elaborate records than has heretofore been possible, without increasing the size of the index. In use the mere act of lifting oropening the desired holder also opens the insert sheet and exposes itswhole surface.
. Ifclaim:
1. An index comprising a series of swinging holders and means to support the holders in overlapped spaced relation, and a removable insert sheet folded upon itself to form two leaves hinged on the fold overlying respectively the opposed faces of two adjacent holders, whereby the folded insert sheet may be opened and its face exposed when the outer holder of said adjacent pair is swung away from the holder underneath.
2. An index comprising a series of swinging holders and means to support the holders in overlapped spaced relation with their free margins exposed one beyond an other, and a removable insert sheet folded upon itself to form two leaves hinged on the fold overlying respectively the opposed faces of two adjacent holders, the under leaf be ing broader than the outer leaf by an amount corresponding to the spacing of the.
holders.
3.' An index comprising a series of swinging holders and means to support the holders in overlapped spaced relation with their free margins exposed one beyond another, and a removable insert sheet folded upon itself to form two leaves hinged on the fold overlying respectively the opposed faces of two adjacent holders, the hinge of fold overlying respectively" the opposed.
faces of two adjacent holders, the hinge of the insert sheet registering with the hinge of the outer holder of said adj aeent pair, and the under leaf of the insert sheet being broader than the outer leaf by an amount corresponding to the spacing oftheholder, and having a second hinge fold registering with the hinge of the under holder of said adjacent pair.
5. An index comprising a series of swinging holders and means to support the holders in overlapped spaced relation'with their free margins exposed one beyond another, each holder having a pocket on each side of its free margin, and a series of removable insert sheets between the several holders each folded upon itself to form two leaves overlying respectively the opposed faces of two adjacent holders and engaged respectively at their edges by the opposed pockets of the two adjacent holders.
6. An index comprising a series of swinging holders and means to support the holders in overlapped spaced relation with their free margins exposed one beyond another, each holder having a pocket on each side of its free margin made of a strip of transparent sheet celluloid folded around the edge of the holder, and a series of removable insert sheets between the several holders, each folded upon itself to form two leaves overlying respectively the opposed faces of two adjacent holders andengaged respectively at their edges by the opposed pockets of the two adjacent holders.
Signed by me at North Tonawanda, N. Y., this 26th day of June, 1919.
