Fargo, in the county of Cass and State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in` Check Books, of which the following isa specilication.

My invention relates to check books, and more particularly tojthat class of books, de# signed for removably containing blank checks andl record leaves, an object of the invention being the provision of improved means, for facilitating the issuance of checks; recording data relatingr thereto; and

extending .the utility thereof.

In the ordinary check book. commonly in use, each check is. accompanied by a stub upon whichto record data, with reference to the check. This involves striking a balance on each stub and bringingsame forward to the next following stub, all of which entails tedious labor, and consumes considerable time.

Further, the stubs are bulky for filing, and compelled to be unnecessarily large, be*-4 cause-they aire usually a continuationof the check to which it isattached by a perforated tearing line.

The principal object of the present invention, is toprovide a. check book. which will obviate all these disadvantages, byy provid,-

ing new and novel means, plainly visible,` for recording and auditing the dataof a.

In the drawings, forming part of this specification, l and 2 designate the covers of the check book, preferably madeof one piecel of flexible material such as leather, having a line of lfold 3, upon which it is bent to close the covers. Oneof theV covers has an integral flap 4 formed byy folding the material along the line of fold 5. Theinner sides of the covers lA and 2 are formed with oppositely disposed pockets 6 and 7, respectively.

Referring to Figure 7, 8 rand 9 designate the covers of the book of recordleaves which are foldableA along the line l0 to enclose the sued, check.

As lthe leaves Mare-printed on both sides, the bcookmayrbe reversed to bring the other sides of the leaves into play, thus extending theutility of the checkbook and economiaing on paper material, as distinguished from books having recording leaves printed only on one side.

The covers 8v and 9 loosely fit the pockets 6 and 7 so thatthey may beinsertedy therein, as indicated in Figure 1 of the drawings, the unused or reserve leaves `being projected with the cover into the pockets, as clearly indicated in Figure 2.

For the purpose of stabilizing or holding the leaf being used, here indicated by the numeral 12, the pocket l7 has diagonally disposed slits 13 cut through the inner wall thereof, one atl each corner adjacent the bottom of the pocket. 'The corners of the record leaf vare inserted respectively into these slits, as shown, whereby the leaf is held fiat against the outside of the pocket to keep it from turning up to thereby `facilitate 'writing thereon.

Referring to Figure 6, lliand 15 designate the `upper and lower covers of a pad of check blanks 16, said checkblanks being suitably bound together along their upper edges, and said covers being preferably foldably connected to said pad by means of a fieXible strip 17. The checks may be removed oneat aI time by means of the perforated tearing line 18, extending across the top thereof.

The cover 14 is made of blotting paper, the object being the 'provision of readily accessible blotting means .at all times handvily positioned for conveniently' drying the written matter, both on the check and record leaf.

' I claim:

l. In a check book of the class described, the combination with a book having an open pocket on the inside of each of its covers, said pockets opening toward the line of fold between said covers, and another book within said first named book, having' its covers projected respectively into said pockets to be thereby removably held foldably positioned therein, a plurality of leaves in the form of checks, bound together along one edge thereof and including a back stri extending over the back thereof, superposed on one of said pockets and having its back strip extended into the interior of said pocket,

2. In a check book of the `class described,v

in combination with a book having a pocket on the inside of each ofvits covers, said pockets opening inwardly, said book including a pad of ldetachably connected check forms removably secured withinits covers, another book having its covers projected respectively into said pockets tovbe closable collectively with said first named book, record leaves securedin said second named book projectable at will 4into either ofsaid pockets collectively or singly, or extendible freely between said pockets, and slits'in one of said covers to receive the outer free corners, respectively, of said freely extending record leaves, for the purpose set forth.

3. In a check book of the class described, in combination with a pair of covers having a line of fold between them, a second pair of covers having a line of fold between them superposed upon said irst named covers to bring the said lines of foldL in register, pockets formed by a wall on said .iii-st named covers to loosely receive said second named covers, slits in thewall of one of said pockets, one for each of the outer corners, thereof, and record leaves in connection with second named covers adapted to enga-ge with their corners singly or collectively in said slits to be held in writing position thereby, and further adapted to be inserted singly or collectively into either of said pockets.

A check book comprising, in combination, an outer book including a pair of foldable covers, an inner book including a pair of foldable covers, Within said outer book and foldable collectively with the latter, pockets carried by said outer book to removably receive respectively the covers of said inner book to hold the latter positioned therein, slits in the cover of said outer book,

and leaves secured in said inner book adapted to engage in said slits to hold them in j flat writing position, a row of titles relating to recordable subject matter concerning checks printed on said leaves, said leaves being ruled into columns to aline with said titles, and substantially similar titles similarly ruled into columns, on the other side of each of said leaves disposed thereon 'to be rendered readable responsive to a reversal of the book.

5. In a check book of the class described, in combination with the elements set forth in claim 4, of indicia printed on the outside of each of the covers of said inner book, and 4providing spaces to be filled in for the recording of the time within which all of the checks were issued and the scope covered by the numbers thereof.

6. In a check book of the class described, in combination, a pair of elongated joined covers, a line of fold longitudinally midway between said covers, a pocket formed by a wall secured to the inside of each of said covers, the openings of said pockets facing said line of fold and being spaced therefrom and parallel therewith, a book of elongated record leaves, including a pair of joined foldable covers, having a line of fold midway between them, said covers removably extending respectively into said pockets to bring their line of fold into register with said first named line of fold, to thereby render both pairs of covers collectively foldable to close them, and said record leaves being projectable, at will, into either of said pockets or therebetween, a series of titles relating to data commonly recorded in the issuance of checks, printed in aline along the outer long edge of each of said record leaves, said record leaves being ruled into columns that aline with said titles, a pad of detachable leaves in the forni of checks, including a backing strip extendin@r inwardly from the top edge thereof, said pad superposed on one of said pockets and havingits backing strip inserted into the latter to thereby hold it removably positioned thereon, and oppositely disposed slits out in the wall of the other of said pockets, one at each of the outer corners thereof to receive 'respectively the outer corners` of record leaves not projected into said pockets, said slits inclining inwardly relative to the openin of the slitted pocket.
