of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Elevators; and I do hereby declare th following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to \Vllltll it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in elevators of the character especially adapted for employment in mines for raising ore or coal out of the shafts of the mines and has for one of its objects the provision of means for automatically dumping the cage or car of the elevator when reaching its uppermost position so as to 0bviate the necessity of manually unloading the cage or car.
Another object of this invention is the provision of means for automatically open ing and closing the door of the car or cage as it reaches its uppermost position and starts to descend in the shaft of the mine.
A further object of this invention is the provision of an elevator of the above stated character, which shall be simple, durable and efficient, and which may be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost.
With these and other objects in view as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in. which Figure 1 is a front elevation partly in section of an elevator constructed in accordance with my invention and illustrating the same applied in the shaft of a mine,

Referring in detail to the drawings, the numeral 1 indicates a frame adapted to be built or otherwise constructed within a shaft of a mine and has secured thereto vertical guides or tracks 2. The tracks or guides 2 have slidably mounted thereon a cage or car 3 by means of clips d. The cage or car has connected thereto the usual raising and lowering mechanism 5 employed on elevators or lifts. The front wall of the cage or car 8 is closed by a hinged door 6 which engages a stop '7 for limiting the movement of the door in one direction. A spring catch 8 engages he door for holding the door from movement in an opposite direction until the car or cage is dumped. A rod 9 is secured to the frame 1 adjacent its upper end and is adapted to be engaged by lugs 10 formed upon the front end of the cage or car 3. When the lugs 10 engage the rod 9, the front end of the car is prevented from having further upward movement, and on further upird movement of the car, the rear end will be elevated permitting the contents of the car to force open the door 6 and slide from the into a suitable chute 12. The upper ends of the guides or tracks are beveled to permit the rear end of the car or cage to tilt upwardly when the lugs 11 engage the rod 9.
A shaft 13 is journaled to the front end of the frame 1 and has secured thereto a cam 14 which cam is adapted to engage the door as the car or cage starts on its downward movement and force said door into a closed position in rear of the catch. The shaft 13 has formed upon one end a weighted lever 15 to which is pivotally and slidably connected a weighted lever 16. The weighted lever 16 is formed upon a shaft 17 journaled to the rear portion of the frame and adjacent its upper end. The shaft 17 has an ofiset portion 18 adapted to be engaged by a pin 19 when the cage or car reaches approximately its uppermost position so that on further movement of the car or cage upwardly, the shaft 17 will be rotated raising the weighted levers 15 and 16 swinging the cam outwardly from the car or cage so that when the cage or car starts to descend the lug 19 frees the shaft 17 and the weighted levers 15 and 16 swing the cam against the door 6 with considerable force suflicient to cause the door to be passed in rear of the spring catch.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it
will be understood that minor changes in construction, combination, and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. An elevator including a frame, a car slidably mounted in the frame, means raising and lowering the car, a hinged door for the car, means for tripping the car when reaching its uppermost position, shafts journaled to the front and rear of the frame, Weighted levers formed on said shafts and pivotally connected, a cam carried by one of said levers, an offset portion formed on the other lever, and a pin carried by the car adapted to engage the offsetportion for elevating the weighted levers so that they will movedown by gravitation when the car descends so as to force the cam into engagement with the door for closing said door.
2. An elevator including a frame, a car slidable on said frame, means for tilting said car, a door pivoted to said car and adapted tov automatically open when the car is tilted, a pivoted cam on said frame, and a weighted lever connected to the camand affected by the movement of the car for causing the cam to close the door.
