To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. FREELAND.
a citizen of the United States, residing at Moline, in the county of Rock Island and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Self-Loading Hoisting-Buckets; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descripcally cut off the discharge of material from i the lower bin when the bucket raises with its load.
With the foregoing general object in view, the invention resides in the novel features of construction and unique combinations of parts to be hereinafter fully described and claimed, the descriptive matter being supplemented bv the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this specification and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation showing the bucket in lowered position to receive the material discharged from the lower bin;

Fig. 6 is a detail side elevation illustrating the manner of moving the dog to operative position to connect the doors of the bin outlet chute and the bucket for simultaneous closing.
In the drawings above briefly described, the numeral 1 designates a vehicle or hopper into which the material to be elevated is dumped, said bin or hopper having an inclined outlet shoe or chute 2 provided at its discharge end with vertical tracks 3 upon which a vertically sliding door 4 is mounted. Friction may be relied upon for holding the door 4; in either'raised or lowered position, but if desired a suitable latch mechanism may be employed. Also, the door may be balanced by suitable weights and cables should occasion so demand. Such details however fall within the skill of the manufacturer and need not be here illustrated or de scribed in detail.
A hoisting bucket 5v operates vertically at the discharge end of the chute 2, being guided in its movement by vertical tracks 6, said bucket being provided with a vertically slidable inlet door 7 which is automatically opened when the bucket lowers and again closed before said bucket is raised, provision being made for causing the opening and closing movements of said door 7 to similarly move the door 4. By means of a pair of arms 8, the door 7 is connected for movement bodily with a pair of vertical rods 9 sliding through guides 10 on the opposite sides of the bucket 5, the upper ends of said rods being connected by a crown 11 to which the hoisting cable 12 is secured. Stops 13 are provided on the lower ends of the rods 9, these stops being adapted to strike the lower guides 10 to raise the bucket 5 after the cable 12 has been wound sufficiently to slide the rods 9 upwardly to the necessary extent. Before the stops in question engage the guides however the arms 8 have closed the door 7 so that as the bucket continues to ascend, its contents will be trapped therein.
The weight of the rods 9 and associated parts is sufficient to lower the door 7 to open position when the bucket reaches the limit of its downward movement, and in order that this opening o t door 7 may come spondingl open the chute door 4:, the latter is provided with an abutment 14 in the downward path of said door 7, the result being that the two doors will be simultaneously opened to permit the material from the chute 2 to discharge into the buckets 5. To cause the closing of door 7 to simultaneously close door 4, a pair of dogs 15 are pivoted to the latter and provided with noses 16 to engage the upper edge of the former, the tracks 3 being provided with vertical cams 17'which throw the dogs 15 to operative positions as the doors 4: and 7 descend bodily. To release dogs 16 when the doors are closed, the upper ends of said dogs are provided with cams 18 which strike fixed trip rollers 19fcarried by the track 3 as featured clearly in Fig. 5. It is the proj ecting ends of the cams 18 that engage the cams 17 to move the dogs to OPBYRUVQPOSltion as shown most clearly in Fig. 6.
In operation, each time the bucket 5 is lowered, its normally closed door 7 strikes the abutment 14 of the chute door 4: and when the downward movement of the bucket is arrested, said door 7 lowers by gravity, the stops 13 then moving away from the lowermost guides 10 as shown in Fig. 1. Due to the abutment 14, lowering of door 7 correspondingly opens door 4 to permit the bucket to fill from the chute 2. The cable 12 is then wound so that the rods 9 are first raised to close the door 7 and then to raise the bucket, closing of said door serving also to close the door 4:, due to the provision of the dogs 15 which are shifted to operative position each time the door 4 is lowered.
From the foregoing, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be obvious that although my invention is of extremely simple and inexpensive nature, it will be highly efficient and desirable, requiring no manual attention whatever except for raising and lowering the cable 12. Any preferred provision may be made for dumping the bucket at the upper end of its travel, but it is preferably provided with a pair of hinged doors 20 held normally in closed position by latches 21, the latches of either door being released by means forming no part of the present invention, so that the bucket may be made to discharge in either direction.
Since probably the best results are obtained from the several features shown and described, these features are preferably employed, but within the scope of the invention as claimed, numerous minor changes may well be made.
I claim:
1. In a hoist, the combination of a chute, a vertically sliding downwardly opening door at the discharge end of said chute, a hoisting bucket at said discharge end of the chute, a vertically slidable downwardly opening inlet door for said bucket to permit filling thereof from said chute, said bucket door moving to open position when said bucket is lowered, raising means for said bucket connected to the door thereof for raising said door to closed position prior to raising the bucket, said bucket door striking and lowering said chute door, when the former moves to open position, and means for im parting the upward closing movement of said bucket door to said chute door.

3. In a hoist, the combination of a chute, a vertically sliding downwardly opening door at the discharge end of said chute, a hoisting bucket at said discharge end of the chute, a vertically slidable downwardly opening inlet door for said bucket to permit filling thereof from said chute, said bucket door moving to open position when said bucket is lowered, vertical guides on the sides of said bucket, rods slidable vertically in said guides and means for raising said rods to raise said bucket said rods having a limited amount of movement before raising the bucket, arms extending rigidly from said rods and secured to said bucket door for raising said door to closed position upon said limited upward movement of said rods, said bucket door striking and lowering said chute door when the former moves to open position, and means for imparting the upward closing movement of said bucket door to said chute door.
4:. In a hoist, the combination of a chute, a vertically sliding downwardly opening door at the discharge end of said chute, a hoisting bucket at said discharge end of the chute, a vertically slidable downwardly opening inlet door for said bucket to permit filling thereof from said chute, said bucket door moving to open position when the bucket is lowered, raising means for said bucket connected to the door thereof for raising said door to closed position prior to raising the bucket, said bucket door striking and opening said chute door when the former moves to open position, a dog on one door to engage the other, whereby raising of said bucket door to closed position will correspondingly raise said chute door, and a trip for releasing said dog when the doors are closed.
5. In a hoist, the combination of a chute, a vertically sliding downwardly opening door at thev discharge end of said chute, a hoisting bucket at said discharge end of the chute, a vertically slidable downwardly opening. inlet door for said bucket to permit filling thereof from said chute, said chute; door moving downwardly to open position when said bucket is lowered, raising means for said bucket connected to the door thereof for raising said door to closed position prior to raising the bucket, said bucket door striking and opening said chute door when the former moves to open position, a dog pivoted to one door to engage the other, whereby raising of said bucket door to closed position will correspondingly raise said chute door, said dog having a release cam, and a trip in the upward path of said cam for releasing said dog.
6. In a hoist, the combination of a chute, a vertically sliding downwardly opening door at the discharge end of said chute, a hoisting bucket at said discharge end of the chute, a vertically slidable downwardly opening inlet door for said bucket to permit filling thereof from said chute, said bucket door moving to open position when said bucket is lowered, raising means for said bucket connected to the door thereof for raising said door to closed position prior to raising the bucket, said bucket door striking and opening said chute door when the former moves to open position, a dog pivoted to said chute door to engage said bucket. door, whereby raising of the latter to closed position will correspondingly raise the former, a fixed cam for moving said dog to operative position when the bucket lowers, and means for releasing said dog when the two doors are closed.

8. In a hoist, the combination of a chute having vertical tracks at its discharge end, a vertically sliding door mounted on said tracks, a bucket movable vertically at said discharge end of the chute, a vertically sliding inlet door for said bucket to permit filling thereof from said chute, vertical guides on the sides of said bucket, Vertical rods slidable in said guides and means for raising said rods to raise the bucket, said rods having a limited amount of upward movement before raising said bucket, rigid arms extending from said rods and secured to said bucket door for raising the latter to closed position during said limited upward movement of said rods, said bucket door being self-lowering upon lowering of said bucket,- an abutment on one door to engage the other, whereby lowering of said bucket door will correspondingly lower said chute door, a dog pivoted to said chute door to engage said bucket door and raise the former to closed position upon raising of the latter, a cam on one of said vertical tracks for moving said dog to operative position upon lowering of the doors, and a trip on said track for releasing said dog when said doors are closed.
