CAR-TRUCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented N ov. 9, 1920.
Application led August 3, 1920. Serial No. 400,904.l
To all colto/m, t may concern:
Be it known that we, BUnNs D. Loon* woon and JOHN F. S'rnnin, citizens of the United States, residing' in Bellevue and Arvalon, respectively, in the county of Allegheny and State oit Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful improvements in .Car-Trucks, ol which the' following is a specilication.
,An object of the present invention is to provide a sii; wheel truck, the frame of which will be rigid, light, simple and cheap in construction and efficient.
Another object of the invention is to construct a, truck havingI a very Vrigid frame and in which the wheels, axles and journal boxes are mounted in such a manner as to readily compensate for unevenness of tracks and curves therein without ailecting the rigidity oi the truck lrame.
A `further object of theinvention is to provide novel side or Wheel pieces and novel connections between such pieces and the tran- Soms or transverse members ot the frame.
These and other objects will be apparent from the following description:
Referring` now to the drawings in which like reference characters refer to like parts, Figure 1 is a plan view of the truck constructed in accordance with the invention; Fig. 2 is a composite view of the saine the lett handv hall beings` sectional view taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1, and the right hand halt vbeing a side elevational view of a portionv ot the truer; Fig; 3, is a coniposite view, the left hand halt being;` a sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. l., and the right hand being; an end elevational view of a portion ot the truck, and Fig. 4, is a sectional view taken on the line 1*-4 oi Fig. 1.
Referring; now in detail to thedrawings, the reference character' l indicates the truck :fame which comprises side pieces 2, end pieces 3, transverse members if intermediate the end pieces and a center bearing or bridge member 5. The side pieces 2 are arranged at the sides of the truck frame Vand each one of them comprises a horizontally disposed web 6 having an inner downwardly depending portion 'l' and an outer downwardly depending' portion 8. These pieces 2 entend for substantially the full length ot the truck and at their ends are provided with pedestals 9 each 01": which is provided with an outer flange 1G which is secured to the outer portion 8 oiz one ot the side pieces 2 and is further provided with :in inner flange 11 which is secured to tho inner portion 7 of the side piece. Fach of the side pieces intermediate its ends is provided with a pedestal 12 having flanges 10 and 11 which are secured to the portions 8 and 7 respectively of the side piece 2. Each one of the pedestals is provided with a jaw in which a journal box 13 is movably mounted. The axles 14E oi the truck are rotatably mounted in the journal boxes and are provided with wheels 15. Between the pedestals 9 and 12, the outer portion 8 of each of the pieces '2` is provided with outwardly extending iianges 16 Vwhich are adapted to Strengthen the piece 2 as a whole.` f
'The members 4 extend transversely for substantially the full width of the truck frame and are so arranged that there will be `one of such members at each side oi the transverse center line ot the truck and in a plane below the side nieces 2. Fach of these members is preferably oi' I form in cross section having` its web 17 disposed ot vertically and its top and bottom flanges 18 and 19 respectively disposed horizontally on each side ot the web 17. A+ their ends the top flanges 18 are cut away and the vertically disposed web 17 and the bottom anges 19 ot the member pass under the side pieces 2, the bottom flanges restino; on and being secured to the horizontally disposed web 20' Ot' a channel shaped member 21, the ends of' `suoli member 21 being secured to lugs 22 on adjacent pedestals. The end portions oi' each. of these transverse members' 4: are connected with the side pieces 2 through the medium of channel shaped members 23. The webs of these members extend in a direction transversely of the truck and their lianpjes 24C and 25 extend in a direction longitudinally of the truck. At each end ot each member 4l, two of .these members 23 are provided the backs of the webs ot' which, at their lower ends, contact with and are secured to the web 17 ofthe member l1. The upper end portion of each oi the flanges 21 is secured to the inner de pending portion .7 ot one of the side pieces, and the upper portion of each of the flanges 25 is secured to the outer depending portion 8 of such side piece, there being a plate 26 interposed between the flanges 25 of two aoljacent members and the outer depending portion 8 of the side piece, such plate extending below the side piece and havingV its lower portion secured to the flanges 25 and to a flange of one of the channel shaped members 2l. To further connect the members Ll with the side pieces 2 flanged plates 27 are provided each of which has a verti cal ila-nge 2S which is secured to the portion 7 of one of the side pieces 2 and has a hori zontal ange 29 which is secured to the top flanges of one oic the transverse members 4:, there being a plate 30 interposed between the flange 29 and the 'flanges of the memberv l such plate being of substantially the same length as the two flanges oi' the member 4C. These plates serve to strengthen the members Il and also form seats for the end of the bridge member' 5. i
rEhe bridge or center bearing member 5, is preferably of ld form `having` two parallel members 3l. The members 3l extend in a direction longitudinally of the truck and at their ends rest on and are secured to the plates 30 and the top flanges of the members 4. The transverse member 32 is 'provided with a center plate 33 which is some distance below the top portions'oi the members 31. The under side portion of this member. 32 is so orme'd that it will arch over the center axle of the truck to permit a suiiicient relative movement between the bolster and the axle.
Between the side pieces 2 and the journal boxes 13, springs 34; are provided the lower ends of such springs being seated on the journal boxes and the upper ends being seated on members 35 which are secured to the web 6 of the side pieces 2, thus substantially inclosing the springs within the side pieces 2.
Having thus described the invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentis: Y n
l. A car truclr comprising .side pieces having inner and outer downwardly depending portions, pedestals secured to said portions, members connecting said pedes- "tals, and members extending transversely of said truck the end portions of said members resting on and being secured to the first mentioned members and channel shaped members for connecting said transverse members and said side pieces.
2. ln a car truck, side pieces. pedestals mounted on said pieces, longitudinally disposed members secured to said pedestals, transverse members between said pedestals secured to said longitudinally disposed members, andvertically disposed channel members secured to said pieces and members.
3. In a car truck, side pieces having inner and outer depending portions, I outwardly extending horizontally disposed iianges on said pieces, a pedestal secured to said depending portions, longitudinally disposed members secured to said pedestals, vtransverse members ar anged in a plane below said pieces and adapted to rest on said longitudinal members, a vertically disposed channel shaped member secured to said pieces and transverse members. Y
4. In a truck, side pieces, transverse members connected with said pieces, pedestals secured to said pieces, longitudinal members disposed below said side pieces and secured to said pedestal, said members comprising a seat for said transverse members, and a center bearing member of H form secured lto said transverse members.
5. In a truck, side pieces, transverse members disposed below saidvpieces, said members having upper and lower iianges, said upper flanges being cut away below said pieces, vertically disposed members secured to said transverse members below where said upper flanges have been eut away and to said pieces. v v .j
In testimony whereof we aiiix our signatures in the presence oi two witnesses.
Burns n. Locirwoon Jona r. eresie.
