- ATTORNEY UNITED STATES PATENT OFFHCE.
COMBINED SYPOOL AND NEEDLE HOLDER.
Application filed May 8, 1918.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, l/VILLIAM T. KnoiinrssnN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Newark, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Combined. Spool and Needle Holders, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
This invention relates to a class of devices for holding thread and needles.
My invention has for its object primarily to provide a device or holder designed to be employed to allow one or more needles to be removably applied to and held to a spool on which is wrapped sewing thread so that the size of the needle which is most suitable for the thread may be kept for conven ient use, instead of requiring the needles and spools to be retained in separate places as is incident to methods ordinarily employed. The invention consists mainly of a spool having an opening therethrough, and in one end of the opening is apenetrable pad for removable insertion. of one or a number of needles.
Another object of the invention is to provide a retainer whereby the pad is fastened to the spool; and a further object of the invention is to provide a combined spool and needle holder of a simple and efficient construction which is susceptible of being made in various sizes and shapes.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and will then be pointed out in the claims at the end of the description.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is an elevation, partly in section, of one form of combined spool and needle holder embodying myinvention.
Fig. 2 is a top plan of the device.
Fig. 3 shows an enlarged perspective of the penetrable pad and the retainer used in the device, and
Fig. a is an enlarged inverted plan of the retainer.
The device or holder has a spool member 10 which may be of any desired type, though this member is preferably of the customary form composed of a tubular body portion 11 to provide an opening or passage 12 length- Specification of Letters Patent.

wise therethrough, and at the ends of the body portion 11 may be the customary annular flanges, as 13 and 14, formed with incllned surfaces which diverge outwardly from the body portion toward its ends so that sewing thread and they like may be wrapped thereon for use in the usual fashion.
in the passage 12 at one end of the spool is a pad 15 which may be made of felt, cloth or other material adapted to be easily penetrated to allow one or more needles, as 16, to be readily inserted in the pad. The penetrable pad is preferably in the form of a cylindrical shaped block of slightly less diameter than the diameter of the passage 12 of the spool as well as being considerably shorter than the passage so that the spool member when desired may be properly applied to a sewing maphine without requiring removal of the pac.
In order to fasten the pad 15 to the spool member 10, I provide a retainer, as 17. The retainer 17 may be of any desired form, though the retainer preferably consists of a ring 18 which is disposed on one end of the pad, and this ring is of a size to embrace the edge of the end of the pad, while permitting the central part of the end of the pad to be exposed through the ring for permitting the needles to be inserted in the pad. Protruding from the underside of the ring 18 are a number of fingers or eX- tensions, as 19, all of which are concentrically arranged relative to the center of the ring. These fingers are disposed in engagement with the periphery of the pad 15 as well as being spaced from each other so that the pad is tightly held therebetween, besides being relatively spaced to snugly engage the wall of the passage of the spool member, and each finger has a tooth, as 20, projecting therefrom which is driven in the pad. Extending radially from the outer periphery of the ring 18 of the retainer 17 may also be a number of spaced fingers or extensions, as 21, and all of these fingers are disposed so as to engage the opposed surface of the end of the spool member. In this manner the penetrable pad 15 is effectually held to the spool member 10 against accidental displacement, and thus a simple and efficient device or holder is provided whereby one or a number of needles most suitable for the thread on the spool member may be applied to and removably held for ready use when Wanted.
In the foregoing deseription, I have embodied the preferred form of my invention, but I do not Wish to be understood as limiting myself thereto, as I am aware that modific'ation's may be made therein Without departing from the principle or saei ifieing any of the advantages of this invention, therefore I reserve to myself the right to malte such changes as fairly fall Within the scope thereof.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1; A spool and needle holder, consisting of a ring, on one end of the spool surround iii-g fill) marginal edge of the opening of the spool, and spaced toothed fingers extending froin the inner periphery of the ring into the opening of the spool, and teeth on the fingers of the ring for engaging a penetrable pad when inserted in the ring and between said fingeis'.
2. The combination With a device of the character described having a spool member, of a ring on one end of the spool member with its opening in register with the passage of the spool member, spaced radially disposed extensions protruding from the periphery of the ring in contaetwith the end of the spool ineinber, spaced toothed fingers extending from the ring into the passage of the spool member, and a penetrable pad arranged between the toothed fingers;
