Be it known that I, MIcHaEn MIsLIKow- SKY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Yonkers, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Sanitary Container, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

As is well known, the board of health, of almost every city in the United States, has enacted laws requiring that food stores, and particularly butcher shops, should immediately dispose of all waste material in a receptacle whose cover must be immediately closed, so that no flies or other vermin would have an opportunity to feed upon such material and to breed within the same.

It will readily be appreciated that in a butcher shop, for example, it is very diflicult for a clerk to have to stoop, take a cover off of a container and replace the same firmly on such container every time he dispenses with a certain amount of surplus material from the meat. This is particularly true when the store is full of customers. the lid of the usual container, by reason of the rough treatment given it, quickly becomes damaged and non-air-tight, and, in fact, it often occurs that the same will not seat upon the mouth of the receptacle at all and only rests upon the upper edges thereof, so that no air-tight seal is made and all sorts of vermin can readily enter such receptacle, rendering the store unsanitary, in addition to creating an obnoxious odor, particularly in hot weather.

I have now devised a container which can be used as a garbage receptacle, or, in fact, for receiving any kind of material, but which is particularly adapted for use in connection with a butcher shop, wherein the material to be thrown away may be tossed into the mouth of such receptacle and will be automatically conveyed therefrom to the body of such receptacle. whereupon the closure provided between the mouth and body will automatically close and form an airtight seal between the interior and exterior of the receptacle.

A further object of this invention is the provision of a structure which is of the utmost simplicity, whereby these results may be obtained, resulting in the consequent economy of manufacture of the same.

In these various figures, 1 designates the main body or tank of the receptacle, which is provided with a removable head 2. An airtight seal, such as indicated at 3, is formed between the two. An opening is cut through the upper face of the cover 2, which opening may be of any desired contour but is preferably rectangular, as indicated by the reference numeral 4. A funnel 5 extends above and through such opening, such funnel having, preferably, clamped to its outer edge, by means of a band 6, a strip 7 of material which has cushioning and airtight qualities.

To provide for the afore-mentioned automatic opening and sealing of the cover opening 4:, I have provided a plate 8 which is hingedly secured, as indicated at 9, adjacent to the strip 7 along one of the edges of the funnel 5. Extending beyond the hinged joint is a short lever 10, which may form an 5 integral extension of the plate 8, which lever supports a c0unter-balancing weight 11, of suflicient size to not alone overcome the downward swinging tendency of the plate 8, but also to swing the same upwardly and firmly into engagement with the strip 7 so as to form a substantially air-tight seal between the funnel 5 and the main tank 1. It is to be noted that the weight 11 is associated with the off set portion of the lever 10, as has been clearly shown in Fig. 2.

In operation it will now be appreciated that no possibility of odor escaping from the tank 1 exists, by virtue of the closure 8.

Further, it will be understood that a clerk lines in Fig. 2, whereupon the material will slide off of thesame and be deposited in the interior of the tank 1; and the plate 8, relieved of such weight, will snap upwardly by virtue of the downward moving tendency of the weight 11 and be firmly engaged by the insulating and cushioning strip 7, preventing, as aforesaid, any obnoxious odors WhlCll mlght be wlthln the lnterlor of the receptacle 1 from contaminating the atmosphere.

It will be appreciated that I may make various modifications with regard to the construction of this receptacle, such as the size of the same, the shape of the opening 4, etc., without in the least departing from the scope of this invention.

Having thus described my invention, I

claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

A sanitary container including a tank, a cover for said tank, said cover being formed with an opening, a band attached to said cover and adjacent said opening and extending downwardly therefrom, a hinge attached to said band at its lower edge, a plate normally closing the opening in said cover and being attached to said hinge, a lever forming a continuation of the plate beyond the hinge and the oliset portion being less than the width of the band, and a weight attached to the offset portion of said lever, whereby said lever and weight are adapted to be accommodated beneath the cover and adjacent to the band when the plate is open.
