BOX OPENING DEVICE. APPLICATION mEn'APn. 5. |920.

t I i M I .J l Y 5 UNITED STATES PAUL F. DEGEN'KOLB,
iATENT OFFICE.
OF ITASGA, ILLINOIS.
BOX-OPENING- DEVICE.
Application filed .April 5,
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, PAUL F. DncnN- xoLn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Itasca, in the county of Dupage and State oi Illinois, have invented certain new and useiul Improvements in Box-Opening Devices, oi which the following is a specification.
This invent-ion relates to a box equipped with a cover opening device which serves also as a cover handling means.
rin exempliiication of this invention in its preferred `form is shown in the accompanying drawing wherein Figure l represents in side elevation a conventional box with its cover in place; Fig. 2 the box with its cover partially raised by operation of the present device; Fig. 3 an enlarged transverse section on line 3--3 of Fig. l; and Fig. l an enlarged side elevation of the opening device.
rlhe box A shown in the drawing may be ci any usual lrind, preferably of metal, having side walls 5 from which is outwardly extended a bead or shoulder 6 near the upper edge. Arrangedvto lit over the box is a cover B whose walls 7 may overlap the upper portion oi the box walls, and slide down thereover as far as the bead 6. Boxes of this character are well ltnown and require no further description. This invention, however, may be applied to boxes otherwise formed, and this should be clearly understood from the beginning.
The opening device forming the subject oi this invention may comprise a handle 10 that is laterally extended from the cover adjacent its lower edge. From this handle about midway of its length depend companion ears 11 adapted to receive between them a pin l2 which provides a hinge mounting for a lever 13 that may also be tormed with companion ears le adapted to lie adjacent the ears ll. The normal position of the lever relative to the handle is as indicated in l and el, this being assured through the medium of a spring 15 which is preferably coiled around the pin 12 and arranged to present its ends 16 one against the handle and the other against the lever near its outer end.
As best shown in Fig. a, the lever is provided with an acting end 17 which lies adjacent the cover edge. Vhen the cover is attached to the box this leverend 17 will rest upon the bead 6 in such a manner as to exert pressure thereupon When a .Corre- Specicaton of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 5, 1920.
15520. Serial No. 371,253.
spending pressure is applied to the opposite end of the lever, such as to move it to the position shown in Fig. 2. Having started the cover from the box, the cover may be removed conveniently through the medium of the handle 10 and lever 13 so as to be placed away as desired.
The box opening device of this invention may be very simply Jformed. In use it operates with certainty, and affords a desirable means ot both loosening and removing a box cover. Changes or modiiications are, of course, possible wit-hout sacrifice of the teatures that are novel to this invention, and accordingly I do not desire to be limited to the exact form shown except as defined in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In combination. a box having a bead outwardly extended Afrom its walls near the edge adjacent an open side oi the box, a cover having a flanged wall adapted to tit over the box sides and to extend adjacent the bead thereon, and an opening device comprising a handle extending laterally 'from the cover. a lever hinged to the handle having an acting end adapted to lie adjacent the bead, and a coiled spring arranged concentrically of the hinge axis operating to hold the act-ing' end of the lever adjacent the handle, the lever when moved against the Jtension of the spring operating to separate the cover from the box, substantially as described.
2. In combination with. a box, a cover therefor, and an opening device comprising` a handle laterally extended from the cover and provided at opposite sides with dependears, a lever arranged operatively to the handle and tormed with 'laterally extending ears adapted to lie adjacent those projected -from the handle. a pintle connecting all four ears to cstablisfi a hinge connection between the le er and handle, and a spring coiled around the pintlc with its ends projected :from the box and between the lever and handle so as to exert iniluence tending` to spread the ends oi the lever and handle which are remote from the box, the lever end adjacent the box being adapted to engage therewith so as to separate the box 'from the cover when the opposite end of the lever is moved. toward the handle, substantially as' described.
