CAN OPENING DEVICE.. 'APPLICATION FILED 1AN.|9.1917.

'1.... /llllll' l CHARLES H. NOWACK, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIG'NOR TO OF NEW YORK, N. Y.,VA CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
CAN-OPENING DEVICE.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 14, 1920.
Application led January 19, 1917. Serial No. 143,204.
To all whom t may 00a-cern.'
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. NowAoK, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hun gary, residing in Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Can- Opening Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates in general to can opening devices and has more particular reference to devices of this character provided upon the bodies of cans having tight friction slip covers.
An object of the invention is the provision of a readily operable, simply constructed opening device which will have a single moving part, and which will beof certain and positive operation.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent as it is better understood from the following description when considered in connection with the accompanying drawing illustrating a preferred embodiment thereof.
Referring to the drawing,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a can provided with an opener constructed in accordance with my invention;
F ig. 2 is a partial top plan view thereof;
Fig. -3 is a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2;
Fig. e is a similar section showing the arrangement of the parts after the opening of a can;
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a partially formed opener; and
Fig. 6 is a view of the latter completely formed.
For the purpose of illustrating my invention I have shown it embodied in an opener provided upon an ordinary blacking box having the usual body 11 and slip cover 12 which is provided with a flange 13 tightly engaging the upper edge 14 of the body wall and pushed down to engage a bead 15 provided on the body to limit its downward movement. The opener, generally designated at A, is positioned just beneath the lower edge of the slip cover, and is constructed and operated as will now be described.
The body at and just beneath the bead is given a spherical curvature throughout aV part indicated at 16 and is perforated at its center at 17 to permit the securing of the opener in place. The opener consists in the present instance of a single piece of sheet metal having a. circular central part 18 given a spherical curvature as may be seen by comparing Figs. 3 and 1. The central part is surrounded by a bead 19, from opposite sides of which extend wings 2O having corners 21 bent outwardly slightly, a pair of which are disposed just beneath the lower edge of the cover. The material of the blank is extended therebeyond and bent along converging lines 22 to form a central triangular part 23 and edge triangular parts 24. Each projection is then bent along a line 25 up, over and onto the central part 18 to provide finger or hand grips 26. The open ends 2T of these two hand or linger grip parts are brought into juxtaposition with the edges 28 of the side wings 241 in contact with the face of the circular central part 18. The center 29 of the central part is riveted through the opening 1T in the present instance by punching it through this opening and upsetting the edges at 31, a filling 32 being provided7 if desired, to prevent leakage or evaporation through the opening thus necessitated. It will be manifest, however, that this may be riveted in any ordinary manner and the rivet itself fill the opening through thel opener.
Inasmuch as an edge of the body of the opening device extends upwardly between the cover and body of the can behind the flange of the cover, the rotation of the device of necessity causes the corners 21 extending outwardly to engage the body edge of the cover and raise it without liability of the can-like cover-engaging part of the opener to slip up outside of the cover flange without lifting it. The action of the device is therefore certain and positive.`
It is thought that the invention and many of its attendant advantages will be understood from the foregoing description, and it will be apparent that various changes may be made in the form, construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention or sacrificing any of its material advantages, the form hereinbefore described being merely a preferred embodiment thereof.
I claim:
1. A can having a slip cover and a body, and a rotatable opener below and engageable AMERICAN CAN COMPANY,
with the edge of the cover and secured to the body, said opener being of sheetrmetal cut v -to form-a central pivoted body and radial wings, said wings being folded on transverse lines over in front of the central body and folded on longitudinal lines to form finger grips.
2. A can having a slip cover and a body, and a rotatable opener below and engageable with the edge of the cover and secured to the body, said opener being of sheet metal cut to form a central pivoted body and radial wings, said wings being folded over in front of the central body and thence toward the central body to form hollow linger grips.
3. A can having a slip cover and a rotatable opener secured to the can below said cover, said opener being adapted to engage the edge of the cover upon rotation and lift the same and having three-sided wings extending outwardly and folded inwardly over its body to provide a finger grip.
1l. A can having a slip cover and a body, and a rotatable opener below and engageable with the edge of the cover and secured to thebody, said opener being of sheet metal cut to forin a central pivoted body and radial wings,gsaid wings being folded over in front of the central body and thence downward to form finger grips and to present the raw edges of the metal inward and the folded edges outward.
5. A can having a slip cover and a body,
and a rotatable opener below and engageable with the edge of the cover and secured to the body, said opener being of sheet metal cut to form a centralpivoted body and radial wings, said wings being folded over in front of the body to form finger grips extending in directions substantially at right angles to the central body.
v6. A can having a slip cover :and an opener pivoted to the body of the can beneath said slip cover, said opener comprising a round rotatable centra-l part having oppositely Aextending wings, corners .of said wings being adapted to engage said slip cover to lift the same and having extensions laid back over the central part to form hand grips.
7. Al can having a slip cover and an opener pivoted to the body of the can beneath said slip cover, said opener comprisw ing around` rotatable central part having' oppositely extending wings, corners of said wings being adapted to engage said slip cover to lift the saine and having extensions laid back over vthe central partto forni hand grips, the edges of said hand Agrips-being bent down into engagement with said round central part.
Signed in the presence vof two subscribing witnesses.
