JOHN HENRY STANTON, OF TORONTQ'ONTARIO, CANADA.
FEED-WATER REGULATOR Ann ALARM.
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that 1, JOHN HENRY STAN- TON, of the city of Toronto, in the county of York, Province ofOntario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Feed -f WVater Regulators and Alarms, ofwhich the following is a specification. l
This invention relates to devices for maintaining a substantially constant water level in steam boilers, and for giving a warning signal in case the water level falls below a predetermined point, and my obyect. is to devise a simple and cheap device which will give efficient service when used with boilers having large steaming capacity relative to their water'content, such as are employed insteam motor vehicles.
.1 attain my object by means of the constructions hereinafter described andillustrated in the accompanying drawings in which V Figure 1 is a vertical section of the device; and
Fig. 2 Fig. 1. p
In the drawings like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures.
1 is a tank, whlch'will usually be formed a cross section on the line'la b in in two or more sections suitably secured together. This tank must be of suflicient strength to withstand the full steam pressure of the boilerwith which the device is used. At its upper end the tank is provided with a connection 2 by means of which its interior may be brought into communication with the steam space of the boiler. At its lower end the tank will be connected with the water space of the boiler well below the average water level of the boiler, and also with the feed water supply. Any suitable arrangements may be provided for this purpose. I prefer, however, to so arrange it that the feed water enters the tank 1 directly, thus insuring that in the operation of the device no hot water from the boiler will be wasted.
In the drawing 3 represents a feed water pipe suitably communicating with the interior of the tank, and provided with a branch 4 for connection with a boiler. The
interior of the tank at the bottom is thus in communication with the interior of the boiler through the branch pipe 4: and the upperpart of the feed water pipe 3. From sition.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Oct, 5, 1920;
'A pplication filed Decemb er 11, 1919. Serial No. 344,225.
the arrangements described, it follows that the water level in the tank 1 will always water level in guide 7 formedon' or secured to the top of i the tank. The vertical movement of the rod is preferably limitedby means of the collar 8 suitably secured to the rod and adapted to engage the lower end of the guide 7. The inner end of the water outlet 5 is shaped to form the valve seat 9, and the lower end of the rod is suitably shaped to form a valve engaging. this seat.
the float'moves downwardly on the'rod 6 and through the medium of the rack and quadrant turns the cock andallow'sa jet of 'steam to escape through'the jet 1?), which may beused in 'any way to give theoperator oiler steam'boilers comprising a tank adapted at warning that the waterlevel in the has fallen to adangerous extent.
, Fromthe' above description it will be seen thatil have devised a water regulator and alarm which will satisfactorily attain the object of-my invention as set out in the preamble to this specification.
glVhat I claim as my invention is i I space of a boiler and at its lower, end for connection with thewater space of a boiler and having a wateroutlet at its lower end; a rod suitably guided to move vertically in the tank and having its lower end adapted to control the water outlet; a float slidahle on the rod;a steam jet. extending through the side of the tank; a cock within the tank controlling the jet; and connections whereby the falling'of the float below a predetermined level moves the cock to open thevjet.
2 A feed 'waterregulator and alarm for steam boilers as set forth in claim 1 in which I i avalve seat isformed at the inner end of the water outlet and the lower end of the rod is formed as avalve adapted to engage l said'seat. 1 h 7 ,3. A feed water regulator and alarm for I steamboilers as set forth in claim lin which the-tank is provided with a direct connection with a feed water pipe.
L A feed water regulator and alarm for steam boilers comprising a tank adapted at its upper end for connection with-the steam quadrant."
5. A feed water regulator and alarm for its upper end for comieetion with the steam space ofa boiler-and at its lower end for -connection with the water'space of a boiler,
d the float relative to the rod.
6I Afeed water regulator and alarm for steam bo lers comprising a tank adapted at its upper-end for connection with the steam space of a boiler and at itslower end for connection with the water space of a boiler, and having a water outlet at its lower end; a rod suitably guided to move vertically in the tank and having its lower end adapted to control thewa t er outlet; a collar'longitudinally adjustable onsaid rod 'a float slidable on said rod below. the collar and adapted toliftsaid rod by engagement with the collar; and a collar adjustable longi: tudinally of therod, and acfixed part-engageable with thecollar to limit the upward movement of the rod Signed at Toronto this 1st day of December, 1919. r
