ARTHUR RONALD rnrs'r, or LONDON, ENGLAND.
FEED-WATER REGULATOR FOR STEAM-BOILERS AND THE LIKE.
To all whom it may concern? Be it known that I, ARTHUR RONALD TRIsT, subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at Coronation House, 4 Lloyds avenue, in the city of London, England, have invented new and useful Improvements in Feed-Tater Regulators for Steam-Boilers and the Like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to feed water regulators for steam boilers and the like, of that class in which a float is arranged within a chamber disposed externally to the boiler and is adapted to actuate a valve which in its turn controls the operation of the check valve of the feed pump. In devices of this kind it has been found in practice that considerable difiicult-y is experienced in initially setting or subsequently varying the apparatus to stop the feed water when the required height of water in the boiler is reached owing to the condensation and heat losses that take place in the steam pipe connectin the steam space of the boiler with the steam space of the regulator thus making it difiicult to predetermine their relative altitudes, and that the horizontal disposition of the valves and their seats occasions considerable inconvenience owing to the accumulation of scum or sediment, and the irregular eflect of corrosion on the lower sides of the valves and their seats; and further that with such small valves as are used in apparatus of this nature, eflicient means of adjusting and locking such valves with certainty and reliability have been impossible to obtain. With my invent-ion all these objectionable features are overcome, and the device while being simple in construction and of low cost to manufacture, permits of the initial setting and subsequent variation of the WOIkll'lg level to be obtained in a simple and reliable manner and without disturbing the various necessary connections, thereby permitting adjustments being made while the apparatus is under steam, and in addition to the above enables the whole de ling the steam to the feed check valve operating device are simplified, made more efiective in action and by which the replacement Specification of Letters Patent.

and adjustment of the valves and seatings is facilitated.
In order that the invention may be the better understood I will now proceed to describe the same in relation to the accompanying drawing, reference being had to the letters marked thereon.
My invention consists in providing a valve box at having avertically disposed rod Z) therein, in the cover 0 of the float chamber cl immediately above the float e, the said valve box a being adapted to be raised or lowered as desired by means of a threaded part a engaging in a nut o and provided with locking means f whereby the said valve box a may be fixedly maintained in any desired position within a given range. Owing to the disposition of the valve box a any weep, drip or particles of foreign matter are washed down into the float chamber 6! and thence back into the boiler thus avoiding scum and sediment accumulating and clogging the valves 9 7b, as obtains with devices having horizontally disposed valves. The said valves 9 h are so disposed that they are a suflicient distance above the water level even when its altitude is increased under the condition of flooded boiler, that they will be rarely if ever submerged, thus cutting of the valves is overcome and the deposition of scum or sediment prevented.
The valves 9 h are combined with a double valve seat '5 as a complete device. The said valve seat 2' is of cylindrical form having recessed ends 7c and a central hole Z. At each end of the said hole Z I form a valve seat and through said hole I dispose a secondary valve stem m having the valves 9 h formed or mounted thereon and adapted to bear on the said seat. One or both valves 9 It can be initially separate from the stem m in order to assemble the parts but when once assembled the valves 9 h are preferably locked in the stem m in a permanent manner to prevent alteration of adjustment being effected by any one. This separate device is disposed between suitably recessed surfaces n 0 drawn together by any suitable means such as a screw thread 1) in order to make a joint around the said device at each end. An annular space 1 is left around the said device between it and the casing in which it is held, and transverse holes r are provided in the body 2' of the said device so as to set up communication between the short time, with great facility and with no space between the valves 9 7t and the annular space q, which latter in turn is connected with a side passage a passing to the device t 1 to be controlled by the steam pressure.
The double valve 9 7b is screwed. to a connecting rod 7) attached to the float gear and in order to prevent the double valve g 72. moving in a rotary direction, the stem is slotted and a transverse pin "a is held loosely in the casing, passes loosely through the said slot and thus prevents its rotation but allows it to move longitudinally. T he construction is as will be seen from the drawing readily adaptable as part of the screw connecting unions of the device and in this way not only is cost of construction reduced but great ti'icilitv obtains in get-tii'ig at the valves and seatings and further a spare double valve 9 it and seatings combined can be kept as a complete spare part ready to be pu tin at a moments notice as a complete element in a very necessity for any line adjustment. The said. valves 9 72 or one of them may if desired be supplemented by a choking sleeve or other arrangement adapted to choke the passage past the stem.
The lower end of the rod Z) is provided with a bridle Q) or similar device which is adapted to engage with motion reducing mechanism 10 actuated by the float c. This motion reducing mechanism to is arranged below the valve box (I; and between it and the float c and consists of a pair of bell crank lovers to w the arms of which are of such proportions as to give the necessary reduction of travel of the rod Z) as compared with the travel of the float e. The said bell crank levers .r as are of such a form as to provide two dependent arms and two substantially horizontal, the horizontal arms 1; c) engag ing with the rod 6 by means of the beforementioned bridle c or the like. To the ends of tliedependent arms a pair of toggle links r) 3 are pivoted which in turn are adapted to bear or rest upon or are attached to the upper part of the float e. The main pivots s .2 of the said reducing mechanism to are attached to or mounted in the valve box a or an extension thereof so that during the adjustment ot the valve box a relative to the float e the longitudinal relation of rod Z) and link work '20 remains undisturbed.
In operation steam is admitted to the upper part of the float chamber (Z and the water in the boiler to the lower part- (Z in the usual way; should the water level rise unduly it will lift the float c which pressing upward against the toggle levers .2 2 will draw down the lower valve r off its seat and the upper valve 71 on to its seat, thus permitting steam from the upper partot the floatchamber to pass to the device t controlling Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents the water or feed pump check valve Z through suitable connections in order to cut it the water supply more or less to maintain a substantially constant level. It the level drops the float c will descend more or in its chamber and allow the link work to to collapse under the action of gravity and the force exerted by the escaping steam upon the valves 9 It and replace the said lower valve 5 more or less upon its seat and raise the upper valve it from oil its seat thus permitting the steam in the feed pump check valve Z to escape to the atmosphere or condenser.
l'laving thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Let-- ters Patent 1. In a feed water regulator for steam boilers and the like in. combination, a float chamber, a steam control valve box adapted to be concentrically disposed in a vertical position in the upper part of said float chamber, means for adjusting the vertical. position of said control valve box relative to the water level, a double valve seat as a separate unit having annular means of discharge through radiating passages trom the central passage, clamping means for supporting said seat in a tight manner in said box, a double faced valve adapted to co-act with said double valve seat, a float in said float chan'iber, operative means mounted on the lower end of said valve box and means for connecting said operative means with said float, substantially described.
2. In a feed water regulator tor steam. boilers and the like in combination, a float chamber, a. steam control valve box adapted to be concentrically disposed in a vertical position in the upper part oi? said float chamber, means for adjusting the vertical position oi said control valve box relative to the water level, double valve seat as a separate unit having annular means of dis charge through radiating passages from the central passage, clamping means for supporting said seat in a tight manner in said box, a double faced valve having a stem on to which one valve is initially attachable in an adjustable manner and adapted to be locked thereon permanently after adjustment, a float in said float chamber, opera tive means mounted on the lower end of said valve box and means for connecting said operative means with said float, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
