Description

B. N. KNOCHE.. SPOOL.
APPLICATION FILED NOV-18, 1919.

m WHIIIIHH ATTORNEYS 'UNITED i115}:
PATEN OFFICE.
IBERNHARD NATHANIEL KNOCHE, 0F VALLEY STREAM, NEW'YORK.
SPOOL.
Application filed November 18, 1919. Serial No. 338,793.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BERNHARD N. K OOHE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Valley Stream, in the county of Nassau and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Spool, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to spools for carrying threads and its object is to provide a new and improved spool which is exceedingly light.
Another object is to provide a spool made of a single piece of light material such as wood, wood pulp and the like, and which is exceedingly strong and arranged to properly fit the spindle of the machine on which the spool is used.
lVith these and other objects in view, the
invention consists of certain novel features.
of construction as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved spool;
Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of the same on the line 22 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the same.
The spool is made from a single piece of wood, wood pulp, or other similar light ma:
terial, and the spool comprises'a barrel l0 provided at the ends with exterior flanges 11 adapted to retain the thread or other filament wound exteriorly onto the barrel 10. Within the barrel 10 is arranged a transverse partition 12 integral with the barrel and located approximately midway between the ends of the barrel. The partition 12 is ring-shaped thus providing a central open-' ingor bore 13 adapted to fit onto a supportlng spindle of a sewing machine or other machine on which the thread carried by the spool is used for sewing or other purposes. Thus the spool is held centrally on the spindle and is not liable to wabble when a pull is exerted on the thread to unwind the latter from the spool.v
It will further be noticed that this partition 12 reinforces the barrel 10 and thus permits of making the latter very thin with a.
view to reduce the weight of the spool to a minimum and thus reduce the expense in shipping filled spools from one place to another. r
The spool shown and described is very simple and durable in construction and exceedingly light and structurally strong. 4
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. As an article of manufacture, a spool for sewing cotton and the like made of a single piece of light material, comprising a barrel having a thin Wall and provided with integral thread-retaining end flanges and an interior reinforcing partition integral with the barrel and having a central bore adapted to engage a sewing machine spindle.
2. As an article of manufacture, a spool for sewing cotton and the like made of a single piece of wood, comprising a barrel having a thin wall and provided with integral thread-retaining end flanges and an interior reinforcing partition integral with the barrel and located approximately midway between the ends of the barrel, the said partition being ring-shaped to provide a central bore adapted to fit onto a sewing machine spindle.
BERNHARD NATHANIEL KNOCHE.
