W/ TNESSES l/V I/E IV TOR To all whom it may concern:
ARTHUR HENRY SCHLOERB, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SPOOL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 24, 1920.
Application filed May 29, 1919. Serial No. 300,561.
Be it known that I, ARTHUR H. SoHLoERB, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, county of New York, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Spool, of which the following is a a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to spools for contaming threads of all kinds.
An object of the invention is to provide a spool or winding core upon which silk thread, yarn or other products of thread manufacturers may be wound or spun. It is an object to provide a simplified form of spool constructed of paper or other very light weight material which will be cheap to manufacture and which will enable the thread manufacturer to inexpensively place 1siilk thread, or other products upon the mar- With the above principal objects in view, the invention has relation to the particu lar form of spool or core construction for threads, an example of which is portrayed in the following description, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the appended claim.
Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings respectively illustrate plan and sectional views of the thread core or spool.
Figs. 3 and 4: respectively show an end view and a sectional view 'of the thread core or spool.
Referring more in particular to the draw- 4 ings, the reference numeral 5 designates a cylindrical core body of suitable length and diameter to present appropriate appearance when placed on the market for sale and to provide an am le body upon which silk or other thread w1ll be. wound.
A closure head 6 centrally provided with a hole 7 is fitted upon each end of the cylinder body. Each closure head 1s formed with a rim face 8, the internal diametral slze of said rim face being adapted to tightly engage and fit the outer diametral size of the cylinder body. This causes the closure heads to frictionally engage the core or spool body 5. The rim faces 8 may be coated with cement prior to placing the heads into position upon the core body. This will further secure the two members together.
A flange 9 is formed integral with the rim face by up turning the rim 8 to form said flange disposed approximately right anular with the axis of the spool body 5.
ach closure head is thus made with a rim face and flange. This construction provides a containing body with the up-turned flanges between which silk thread, yarn, cord or other spinners products may be wound to facilitate handling and transportation during the marketing of the products.
The holes 7 in the spool are provided for the purpose of mounting the spool or core upon the revolving spindle of the thread winding machines employed-in the factory. This form of thread spool or core is considerably lighter than other material, such as wood, now used for this purpose. This spool design presents an economical and convenient article which may be used by thread manufacturers for the marketing of their products. a
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
An article of manufacture such as a thread core or spool made of paper, comprisinga paper tube open at each end, a paper cap anchored on each end of the tube, a rim integrally formed with each cap made to engage and bind the end of the paper tube, anda rim turned up to form a flange providin a thread-retaining core.
