Description

S.D.EUBANKS. CHECK FOR PICKER STICKS FOR LOOMS.
APPLICATION FILED AUG-29. I919.
Patented Sept. 21,1920.
WITNESSES post 14 to anchor such end of the spring.
The other end of the spring has a prolongation 2 1 for engaging'ithe return portion 19. By rotating the post 14.- while the screw 7 is loosened the spring 21 may be put under any desired degree of tension and then the, screw 7 is tightened to hold the spring in such po-v sition." Under these circumstances ashOu-lder 24 on the extension or table 4 is engaged by.a stop member 25 on the arm maintainmg thesnring under the desired tensionj If,
shuttle, indicated at dotted lines in Fig. 1, reaches the picker stick it is traveling at hlgh speed and] consequently the picker stick is forced toward the right as seen in Fig. 1, coming in contact withthe strap 13 adjacent to the tail end or'extremity 10 of the arm 5 and between said tail end 10 and the retaining and guiding flange .26. Theimpact ofthevpicker stick A over comes the resistance of the spring 21 caus- Q ing the unsupported portion of the strap 13 andjthetail like extremity 10 of the arm 5 to move with1increasing resistance due to the winding of the spring and the friction between thestrap 13 and the flange 26. While the checking of the picker stick and consequently of the shuttle, is rapid in the matter of time, its efi'ect is gradualpwhere fore all shocks and jars areavoided, the stick being thus eased into position the check and reboundto'the shuttle is prevent ecl. v The movement'of the check under the impact "of the shuttle and picker stickis indicated by the arrow E in Fig. '2. V
' In actual practice the travel of the stick under the impact of the shuttle against the opposition of the check is about two inches. The, check follows the stick in the opposite directionasthe shuttle is driven 'across the loom until stopped by the. adjustment pro vided and is then ready to receive and check the shuttle on, its returntraveltoward the first considered'position. V
' When the picker stick strikes the checkit,
engagesthe strap l3 close to the end 11: of the arm 5, thus engaging the yielding and relatively softsurface ofthe strap 13, cansing thearm 5 to turn about the axis of the screw -7"and' pulling the other end ofthe strap about the friction surface 26. This maintains the strap under considerable tension and thewhole strap yields to the impact of the picker stick, neither end of the strapbeing fixed. The lengthwise yielding of the strap is due to the yielding of the spring 21; l Y
WVhat 'is claimed is 1. A check for picker sticks for looms comprising a flexible strap, supports for bothends of the strap holding the intermediate' portion of the strap tight with both ends of the strap movable in the samedirection about a common'axis, and elastic means common to both ends of the strap and arranged to yield to the impact ofthe shuttle against the picker stick and through the latter to the check.
p "2. A check for picker sticks for looms comprising a flexible strap, supports for both ends ofthe strap holding the intermediate portion ofthe strap tight with both ends offthe strap movable in the same direction about a common axis, and elastic means common to both ends of the strap and arranged to yield to the impact of the shuttle against the .p.icker stick and through the latter to the check, said check including a friction plate engaged by the strap and elongated the strap. 7
3. A check for picker sticks of looms, comprising a rotatable member, an arm rotatable about the same axis as-the rotatable member, a spring connected to'the rotatable member for imparting. thereto a ,rotative in the direction of the length of tendency in one direction, and a strap for H location in thepath o'fthe'picker stick'to be engaged thereby between its ends, said strap beingjfast at one, end to the rotatable member and at, the'other end'to the rotatable arm.
J4; A check for picker sticks of looms comprising a support, an arm [with a'taiL like extension andpivotally mounted on the support to rock with respect thereto, a member also pivotally mounted on the support concentric with the axis of movement of the arm, a strap fast at one end to the taiL like extension" and at the other end to the support and constituting a connection between. the arm and support to cause them 7 to i mo e together, a spring connecting V the arm. and support'and tending to maintain the strap in a taut condition, and a guide in the path of the strap and a'rrangedin' thearm to providejan unbacked part of the strap I constituting a yieldable impact surface for'the picker stick. v
5.1A 'check forypicker sticks of looms comprising a supportjan arm witha taillike extension and pivotallymounted on'the support to rock with respect thereto, a
7 member also pivotally mounted on the sup port concentric, with the axis of movement of the arm, a strap fast at one end of the tail-like extension and; at theother 'endto spaced relation to the tail-like: extensionfof V I the support and constituting a connection between thearm and support to cause them to move together, a spring connecting the arm and support and tending to maintain the strap in a taut condition, and a guide in the path of the strap and arranged in spaced relation to the tail-like extension of the arm to provide an unbacked part of the strap constituting a yieldable impact surface for the picker stick, the guide being in the form of a fixed flange extended in the direction of travel of the strap to provide frictional resistance to the lengthwise movement thereof.
6. A checkfor picker sticks of looms, comprising a bracketwith a tableextension, an arm pivotally mounted at one end on the table and provided with a tail extending away from the table and located in substantially right angular relation thereto, a flange on the table, a yieldable support on the table, and a strap fast at one end to the yieldable support and at the other end to the tail end of the arm, the latter being under the control of the yieldable support through the strap, and said arm and table having coacting stop means for limiting movements of the arm about the spring support.
7. A check for picker sticks for looms comprising a support with a post thereon,
'of the spring such as to rotate theends of a screw for holding the post in place, a sleeve on the post, a spring carried by the post and sleeve with one end of the spring fast to the post and the, otherend fast to the sleeve, an arm carried by the screw as a pivot and projecting away therefrom, and a strap fast at one end to the sleeve and at the other end to the arm with the tendency the strap in the'same direction, and the support and arm having engaging stop parts opposing the movement of the spring in one direction. 8. A check for picker sticks of looms comprising a support with a post thereon, a screw for holding the post in place on the support, a rotatable sleeve on the post, a spring carried by the sleeve and post and connected at opposite ends to the respective sleeve and post, an arm carried by and rotatable about the screw and provided with a tail-like extension, and astrap fast at one end to the sleeve and at the other end to the extremity of the arm of the tail-like extension of the arm, the screwserving as a clamp member for the post to hold the latter and the spring in desired positions of adjustmentto regulate the tension of the spring.
In testimony whereof I aflix my si ature.
