Description

F. M. LAMB. POWER GAGE DEVICE FOR PIGKER STICKS O]? LOOMS. APPLICATION FILED MAR. 25, 1913.

- INVE TOR Allorney martian srarns FRANKLIN MILTON LAMB, OF NORTH STONINGTON, CONNECTICUT.
POWER-GAGE DEVICE FOR PICKEB-STICKS OF LOOMS.
Application filed March 25, 1913.
To all) whom may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANKLIN MILTON LAMB, a citizen of the United States, residing at North Stonington, in the county of New London and State of Connecticut, have invented new and useful Improvements in PowenGage Devices for Picker-Sticks of Looms, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a power gage device for picker sticks of looms, employed for the purpose of regulating the speed of the shuttle in weaving cloth.
Among the objects of the invention are the provision of a device of this kind that is attachable to the standard types of looms without alteration of parts thereof; the provision of a device of this kind that avoids the necessity of altering the picker stick and consequently weakening the same; the provision of a device of this kind that does not effect undue wear of the usual leather lug strap connecting the picker stick to the sweep stick, and the provision of a device of this kind that is of generally improved form.
With these and other objects in view, the invention has been embodied in preferable form in the device hereinafter described and illustrated in the drawings.
In said drawings: Figure 1 is an elevation showing the invention in connection with a picker stick, lug strap, and support. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view through the parts embodying my invention. Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. l, and Fig. 4 is a detail longitudinal sectional view of the upper part of the gage stick employed.
Like reference characters designate like or similar parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
Referring specifically to the drawings 1 designates a suitable support, which is usually an integral arm or projection of a loom, to which is pivotally connected a picker stick 2 as by means of a bolt or pivot member 3 extending through a horizontally elongated slot 4; of the support.
Numeral 5 designates the usual lug strap, preferably of leather, which surrounds the picker stick and connects the picker stick to the usual sweep stick of the loom and drives the picker stick from the sweep stick. Con- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented @et. 21, 1913.
Serial No. 756,735.
nected to the lower end of the picker stick is a bracket 6 to which is secured a coil spring 7, which coil spring 7 is adapted for attachmentto a stationary part, and normally maintains the picker stick in outward position as usual.
The parts embodying my invention principally comprise a gage stick, preferably of wood and designated 8; a gage plate, preferably of metal and designated 9, and means for connection of the stick and plate in relatively adjustable relation and to the proper parts of the loom. Adjacent the upper portion of stick 8 is provided a longitudinally elongated slot or opening 10 through which in the assembling of the parts, the strap 5 is passed as best seen in Figs. 1 and 3. The lower portion of stick 8 is preferably bifurcated to provide an arm 11, an arm 12 somewhat longer than arm 11, and an intermediate slot 13.
Gage plate 9 at its lower portion is connected on to the bolt or pivot 3 and has an opening 9 through which an enlargement 9 of the bolt extends, which bolt it will be remembered is the means connecting the picker stick to the support 1. Enlargement 9 forms at its ends abutments for the picker stick and support 1 so that the stick 8 and plate 9 will be properly spaced from and in operative relation to said stick and support. Said plate is provided with a longitudinally elongated slot 14. A portion of this plate is located in slot 13 and the plate and stick are adjustably connected together by means of a bolt 15 which extends through suitable openings in arms 11 and 12 and through the elongated slot is, receiving beyond one of the arms a nut 16 and when desired also a washer such as 17. It will thus be seen that the power is gaged according to the adjustment of stick 8 and plate 9 and that such adjustment is had by loosening nut 16, moving the stick and plate relatively to the desired position and thereupon tightening nut 16. Stick 8 is rabbeted or cut away at 18 so that in the swinging movement of the stick 8 the same will clear a laterally extending lug 19 such as is usually provided on a support like that designated 1.
It will be realized that I have provided a device that is simple in construction, hence one that can be readily manufactured at minimum cost, a device that is attachable to standard types of looms, and a device which accomplishes the several objects stated.
As I do not desire to limit myself to the exact construction illustrated, changes within the spirit and scope of the appended claims are accordingly reserved.
Having thus described my said invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a device for the purpose specified, in combination with a lug strap, a support, a picker stick and pivot means connecting the picker stick to saidsupport, said lug strap engaging said picker stick, a gage stick provided with an opening through which said strap extends, said gage stick provided with a plurality of arms and an intermediate slot, at gage plate extending into said slot provided with an elongated slot, a bolt passing through said arms and said elongated slot, and said gage plate con nected to said pivot member.
In a device for the purpose specified, a support, a picker stick, a pivot bolt connectingthe picker stick to said support, a gage stick member, a driving element for said picker stick connected to said gage stick member, a gage plate member, one of said members provided With a plurality of arms and an intermediate slot, the other member extending into said slot and provided with an elongated slot, a bolt passing through said arms and said elongated slot, and said gage plate member connected to said first bolt.
FRANKLIN MILTON LAMB.
