Be it known that LART GUs'rArsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Moline, in the county of Rock Island and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Umbrellas, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to umbrellas and more particularly to folding umbrellas,

The object of the invention is to provide a simple and cheaply constructed article of this character which may be quickly opened or closed bysliding a sleeve on the stick in the usual manner.

Another object is to construct such an article with a folding frame and a telescoplc stick so that it will occupy a minimum amount of space when collapsed, yet be quickly and easily opened for use.

With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the inventionresides in the combination and arrangement of partsand 1n the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of'the invention.

The extension 17 of section 14: carries at its free end a pivoted arm 18 which is bifurcated and the furcations l8 thereof straddle,

the brace 20 which connects section 13 with a' sliding sleeve 25 mounted on the tubular stick section 2. A roller 19 is carried by the outer or free ends of the furcations 18 and 1 bears on the inner edge of brace 20, a spring 21 operatingto hold said member 18 in operative position. 7

Mounted to slide on each rib section 13 is a sleeve 22 pivotally connected with the outer end of brace 20 and which carries a spring tongue 24: designed to enter a dent 23 in the inner edge of rib section 13, to pre vent said sleeve from sliding too loosely on the rib' section and yet permit it to move rearwardly when the frame is to be 001- lapsed. The sleeve 25 which slides on stick section 2 carries a spring catch 26 designed to lock said sleeve in raised or lowered position and this sleeve carries the brace members 20 which connect with the rib sections 13, said braces being pivotally connected with said sleeve.

Section 2 of the stick is shown provided near its upper end with a laterally extending lug 2 to form a stop for limiting the upward movement of sleeve 25 and said member 2 is provided at a point. spaced inwardly from stop 2 with an aperture 2 designed to, receive catch 26 for locking sleeve 25 in raised position. This member 2 is also provided near its lower end with another aperture 2 which is designed to receive'the catch 8 carried by the inner end of section 6 for locking the stick sections in' extended position.

In the use of this umbrella, it being of course understood that the frame is covered with the ordinary cloth. attached to the collar 4 and to the free ends of the stick sections 14, when it is desired to foldup the umbrella the catch 26 is released from aperture 2 and the sleeve 25 moved downwardly on tubularstick section 2 which movement causes the sleeves 22 to slide inwardly on the rib sections 13 thereby exerting a pull on the links or arms 18 which operates to fold the outer rib sections 14 inwardly on the outer face of sections 13 in the position shown in Fig. 2. WVhen the frame has been so collapsed section 6 of the stick is disengaged from section 2 by depressing catch 8 and said section is moved inwardly until the shoulder 11 contacts with the outer end of tube 2 in which position it will be held by catch 26 bearing on section 6 as is shown clearly in Fig. 2.

To open the umbrella, catch 26 is depressed to releaseit from section 6, the hand grip l0 grasped and pulled outwardly until catch 8 engages with recess 2 when the stick will be in open position ready for use. Sleeve 25 isthen moved upwardly on the stick section '2 which causes the rib sections 14; to open outwardly owing to the outward sliding movement of the sleeves 22 on rib sections 13 and when they reach the position shown in'Fig. l'they will be securely held by the springs 16 and 21 and the urnbrella is ready for use.

From the foregoing description, taken in invention together with the device-which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it. understood that the device shown is merely illustrative and that such changes may be made as are within the scope of the claimed invention.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as newand desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: c

1. A folding umbrella comprising a stick, a sleeve sli'dable on said stick, ribs pivoted at one end to the upper end of said stick and 'each composed of twosections hingedly connected at theirmeeting ends, a spring for normally holding said sectionsin open position, sleeves slidable on the inner rib section, brace rods connecting said sleeve on the stick with the sleeves on the rib sections, arms carried by the outer ib sections the rear. of their pivotal connection, said arms carrying rollers engaged with the inner edges of said brace rods whereby the raising and lowering of the sleeve on the stick will operate to open and close the outer and inner rib sections.

2. A foldingumbrella comprising a stick, a sleeve sli'dable on said stick, ribs pivoted at one end to the upper end of said stick and each composed of, two sectionshingedly connected at their meeting ends, a spring for normally holding said sections in open lowering of the sleeve on the stick will open ate to open and close the outer and inner rib sections.
