Description
L. B. NELSON- DUMPING BODY FOR VEHICLES! APPLICATION FiLED SEPT. 16, 1919.
1,353,062. Patentedsept. 14,1920.
LEWIS B. NELSGN, OF WALLINGFORD, IOWA.
DUMPI1\TG -BODY FOB. VEHICLES.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Sept. 14, 1920.
Application filed September 16, 1919. Serial No. 324,084.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEWIS B. NELsoN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of W'allingford, in the county of Emmet, State of fowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dumping- Bodies for Vehicles, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to an improved construction of dumping bodies for Vehicles, and has for its primary object to provide a convenientand practical means for dropping and closing the swinging bottongl sections of the body in discharging a loa A further object is to so construct the operating means for dropping and closing the bottom sections, as to enable the load to be either discharged at one operation or gradually deposited over a wide area.
Further objects will appear upon reference to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a vehicle body, constructed in accordance with the invention; V
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of a vehi cle body, constructed according to the invention;
Fig. 3 is a cross-section; and
Fig. 4 is another longitudinal section, showing the operating. means in a position for discharging part of the load.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the body of the vehicle is divided longitudinally into two compartments by the medial partition 5. Each of the compartments isconstructed with a swinging bottom 6, which is hinged to the side of the body, as at 7, and extends the entire length, and practi cally the entire width, of the bottom of the compartment, in orderto permit an unobstructed discharge of the load. Curved metallic sheets 8 are arranged to prevent any of the material which is to be discharged from crowding into the corners of the body. Both of the swinging bottom sections 6 are adapted to swing toward and away from the medial partition 5.
The operating means for the swinging bottom sections 6 comprise a pair of horizontal rocker arms 9, pivotally mounted on the medial partition 5 by means of the links 10. Each swinging bottom section is connected to the links 10 by means of the flexible connection 10. Each of the rocker arms 9 is provided with independent actuating means, such as the togglejoints, consisting of the links 11, pivoted at one end to the rocker arms, with their other ends pivoted to operating levers 12. The operating levers 12 are located adjacent the drivers seat, in convenient reach for the driver to manipulate them in discharging the load.
As stated, each of the swinging bottom sections 6, by means of the above described operating arrangement, is capable of being opened and closed independent of the other; thus, either the entire load may be discharged from both compartments at the same time, or one compartment discharged without the other. Now, attention is called to the pawl and ratchet arrangement on the levers 12, which enables them to be thrown any desired distance and maintained in any position. With this arrangement, it is possible to open the swinging sections 6 the desired width to gradually deposit the load over a wide area.
Claims. c
1. In a dumping body for vehicles, a pair of bottom sections adapted to swing longitudinally of the medial line of the body, operating means for said sections, comprising a pair of horizontal rocker arms, each connected by flexible members to one of said sections, and levers for operating each of said rocker arms, said levers connected to said rocker arms by a toggle joint.
2. In a dumping body for vehicles, a medial partition dividing the body longitudinally into two compartments, a swing.- ing bottom for. each compartment, and means for opening and closing each bottom section independent of the other, comprising a pair of horizontal rocker arms pivotally mounted on the medial partition and connected by fiexible'members to each bottom section, and operating levers for the rocker arms.
3. In a dumping body for vehicles, a medial partition dividing the body longitudinally into two compartments, a swinging bottom for each compartment, and means for opening and closing each bottom section independent of the other, comprisgle joints.
