Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 17, 1920.
Application filed April 26, 1920. Serial No. 376,718.
The present invention relates to milk b ottle covers or closures, and it is the object of the invention to provide a novel form of cover which may be readily positloned on a milk bottle to exclude dirt, dust orthe like,
when the usual pasteboard bottle cap has been removed.
A, further object of the invention is to provide a cover of this character including a pair of spring arms adapted to be sprung into position around the usual milk bottle top, in a manner to permit the device to be readily removed, but prevented from accidental displacement.
lVith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the 001m bination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter -described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention;
Referring to the drawing Figure 1 illustrates the neck of a milk bottle, showing the removable cover constructed in accordance with thepresent invention, as applied to, the mouth of the bottle. Y
Fig. 2 illustrates a sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1. V
Fig. 3 illustrates a rear elevational view of the cover as applied. E
Referring to the drawing in detail,-the device forming the subject matter'of the present invention is shown as applied to the mouth of a milk bottle, indicated at 5, the mouth of the bottle being provided with the usual bead. I i
The cover proper includes a disk-like top 6 formed preferably of sheet metal, the same having a depending annular flange 7 formed preferably of sprin steel, the flange being curved transversely to conform to the curvature of the usual bead of a milk bottle.
This flange 7 is secured to the disk-like top 6, throughout a portion of its length, the free ends of the flange overlapping each other as indicated at 8, and provide spring arms for gripping the bottle adjacent the upper end thereof to secure the cover to the bottle.
Forming a part of the flange 7 is an outwardly and downwardly extending portion indicated at 9, which portion 9 provides a ca'mming means to cam the resilient arms outwardly to permit the cover to be readily and easily forced into position to cover the bottle, to which the device is applied.
1 In the operation of the device, it is only necessary to place the cover over the mouth of a bottle, force the same downwardly whereupon the spring arms expand and grip the bead of the usual bottle to maintain the cover in proper relation with the bottle, to
" prevent accidental displacement thereof.
- If it becomes necessary to remove the cover, a slightpull exerted thereon tends to expand the arms to cause the same to release their hold on the bead.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is In a cover for bottles, a circular top, a curved depending flange having connection with the top throughout a portion of its length to provide spring arms, said spring arms adapted to overlap each other at the free ends thereof, and means forming a part of the spring arms to cam the same outwardly to cause the arms to grip the bottle to which the same is applied.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
CLARA M. RICE. Witnesses:
Dr. D. F. Rron, Mrs. A. J. VVOLBRINK.
