`Be it known that I, ASA C. IVALKER, a
citizen of the United States, Aresiding at Mount Airy, in the county of l-Iabersham and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tie-Spac ing Devices rfor Railroads, of which the folspacing ties 'under the rails, the aim being to position the clamp in engagement with the rail, constituting an -abutment for the jack, which is placed between the clamp and the tie, whereby upon manipulation of the jack the tie may be moved.
Another object resides in the provision of a rail clamp, in the form of a rail chair, the rail engaging cavities or cut away4 faces thereof being beveled on angular planes, whereby the chair or clamp may be disposed in engagement with the rail from underneath in angular positions, sothat when one end of the j ack engages the clamp or chair, the clamp will wedge in position.
A further object resides in the provision of means on the clamp to engage the inner portion of the base of the rail to insure locking the clamp in position, particularly when pressure is applied thereagainst, that' is to say locked by causing a wedging action.
lVhile the design and construction at present illustrated and set forth is deemed preferable, it is obvious that as a result of a reduction of the invention to a more practical form for commercial purposes, the invention may be susceptible to changes, and the right to these changes is claimed, provided they are comprehended within the scope of what is claimec.

Each clamp comprises a body, the base 5 of which Vengages under the base of the rail, and the yupper` face-of this base is beveled or inclined as indicated at 6, whereby the clamp may be held in an angular position relatively to the rail. Overlying the base 5 of the clamp and projecting from the body thereof is an enlargement 7, which has its under face beveled as indicated at 8, to overlie and engage the upper surface of the base of the rail to permit the clamp to be positioned angularly relatively to the rail. The enlargement 7 near its upper inner portion is cut away as indicated at 9, and is shaped to conform to the contour of the under surface of the ball In fact the surface of this cut away portion is beveled correspondingly to the bevels 6 and 8 in order to permit the clamp to be angularly disposed.
In the use of the clamp, it is placed in engagement with the rail. as shown clearly in Figs. l, 2 and 3, the clamp being disposed angularly. The jack is disposed so that the foot l0 of the rack of the jack engages the clamp. The head ll of the body l2 of the of the clamp i jack is disposed in engagement with one of the ties. The operating lever 13 of the jackv protrudes upwardly and after the jack is so disposed, the operating lever is manipulated, thereby causing the body and the rack to move in opposite directions. The foot of the rack will bear against the clamp while the head of the body will bear against the tie, and as the two parts of the jack move The abutment clamp shown in Figs. 5 and 6 is employed in a similar manner, with the exception that the base of the body of the clamp has Vanupwardly projecting lug le which engages the inner edge of the base of the rail, thereby maintaining the clamp in vposition more efliciently. The invention having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful is l. ln a device of the kind set forth, an abutment clamp comprising a body having a base adapted to engage under the base of the rail, said body having a lateral projection to overlie the base of the rail and engage under the ball of the rail and in contact with the web thereof, said abutment clamp adapted to wedge in engagement with the rail, when pressure is applied thereon when using a jack between the clamp and a tie, the upper face of the base of the clamp Y andy the-.under face of the projection of the body being correspondingly beveled, whereby the` clamp may be disposed angularly with relation to the rail,'to insure its Wedging engagement with the rail, said lateral projection having its upper inner portion 3 eut away and beveled to Wedge under the ball of the rail.
