Description

J. DUFFY.
FUEL MIXER.k APLYICATION FILED DEC. 3.191?.
1,347,997, l Patented July 27, 1920,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN DUFFY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
FUEL-MIXER.
To all whom'z't may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN DUFFY, a citizen of the United States, ,and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fuel-Mixers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in fuel mixers for use in conjunction with internal combustion engines, and adapted to supply a mixture of air and steam to the explosive charge, the object of the invention being to provide a simple and efficient device of this character which may be readily applied to any of the usual forms of such engines, and which is capable of uniform operation.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference `to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure 1 is an end View of a fuel mixer embodying the invention,
F ig. 2, a view of the opposite end thereof,
Fig. 3, a top plan view corresponding with Fig. 2,
Fig. 4, a. vertical section of a valve corresponding with Fig. 1, and
Fig. 5, a section taken on line 5 5 of Fig. 2.
The preferred form of construction 'as illustrated in the drawings comprises a cylindrical casing 6 havinga threaded stud 7 at one end thereof,-and by means of which the device may be readily mounted on the exhaust manifold of an ordinary internal combustion or'explosive engine. The casing 6 is provided at one side with a horizontally extending threaded nipple 8, adapted to rcceive the end of a pipe 5). which in turn is connected with the intake pipe of the engine. At its opposite side casing 6 is provided with another threaded nipple l() leading. horizontally thereinto and connected with a pipe 11, which -leads to the water jacket of the engine for supplying water to the device. The passage of nipple 10 leads to a port 12 leading into the interior of casing 6 and controlled by a needle valve 13,
specification of Lettersraient. Patented July 27, 1920 Application filedAk December 3, 1917. Serial No. 205,084.
as shown. A'plurality of air inlet openings or ports 14 are provided in the closed end of casing 6, a hollow rotary valve 15, operating in casing 6, being inserted therein through the open end thereof. Valve 15 is rotatably mounted on a central stem or stud 16 `projecting from the closed end of casing-""6, through the open end thereof, and said valve is held to its seat by means of a compression spring 17, as shown. Valve 15 is provided with an outlet port 18 arranged to register with the nipple 8 to permit the passage of air and steam to the engine intake through pipe 9, and a peripheral groove 19 is provided in valve 15 to register with port 12, and leading to a port 20 to admit water from pipe 11 to the interior of valve 15. The inner end of valve 15 is closed by a plug 21 having ports 22 therein, adaptedto register with "the ports 14, as shown, the outer end of valve 15 being closed by a plate 23 formed integrally therewith. Plate 23 is provided with two substantially diametrically disposed operating arms 24 formed integrally therewith, and two substant-ially diametrically disposed supporting arms 25 are formed integrally with casing 6- and provided .with threaded sockets 26 at their outer ends. The sockets 26 are arranged to receive the outer casing/or flexible pipe 27 of a Bowden wire, the interior wire 28 thereof being arranged to be connected with the corresponding arm 24 which is perforated for the purpose.
vBy this arrangement it will be' observed that the Bowden wire may be readily connected with either of the arms 24, and that operation of said Bowden wire by applying tension thereto, will serve to open the valve 15 to permit passage of air and steam to the engine intake. and that compression applied to the Bowden wire will close vsaid valve. Thus the device may be applied to any ordinar)7 internal combustion or explosive engine and the Bowden wire operating connecsuitable quantity of air before being sup. vplied to the explosive mixture. The plurality of air inletports 14l22 serve to supply ample air to the device without noise, and the, valve is so designed and constructed that the more the port l2 is opened to admit more water, the more ports 14 are opened to admit more air and thus regulate this supply of air in proportion to the amount of water admitted. The specific form and arrangement of parts is a simple and emcient one for the purpose.
While l have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modilication without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
