WILLIAM 3. WHITE, OF' DES MOINES, IOWA.
COMBINATION PENCIL-CLIP AND SPEO'I'ACLE-HOLDER.
Application filed December 16, 1919. Serial Nb. 345,326.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM B. TVHITE,
a citizen of the United States, and a resi:
dent of Des Moines, in the county of Polk and State of Iowa, have invented a certain new and useful Combination vPencil-Clip and Spectacle-Holder, of which the following is a specification. i
The object of myinvention is to provide a combination pencil clip and spectacle holder of simple, durable and inexpensive construction. V j I More particularly it is my object to provide a pencil clip and spectacle holder made of a single piece of resilient wire and bent to form an ear engaging portion, and a portion extended upwardly therefrom, so that a pencil or the like may be placed between the upper portion and the head of the user and be frictionally held there.
More particularly it is my object to provide a pencil clip and spectacle holder made of a single piece of resilient wire and bent to form an ear engaging portion and a portion extended upwardly therefrom, so that a pencil or the like may be placed between the upper portion and the head of the user and be frictionally held there, and bent near its upper end, so as to form a link, whereby a chain of the ordinary type used for holdin spectacles may be attached thereto.
till a further object is to provide a device made of resilient material that may be readily placed around the ear of a person and be held there, the device being provided with an upwardly extending member, which is adapted to be inclined slightly inwardly. so that it touches the side of the head of the user of the device, so that when a pencil or the like is placed between the outwardly projecting memberand the head of the user. the pencil will be frictionally held there.
With these and other objects in view, my
invention consists inthe arrangement, construction and combination of the various parts of my device, whereby the objects contemplated are attained, as hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in my claim, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 shows a side view of the user of Specification of Letters Patent. Patj ted Jul 13 192(1 my device with apencil shown in position above the ear I V v Fig. 2 showsafside view of my'device, which is madeof a single piece of material.- 51g. 3 shows an end view of my device; LFig. l shows a modified ,form "of my de-i vice, the pencil clip being made of a separate pieceof material and fastenedvto the eareengaging portion of the device. l I
(Tn/the accompanying drawings, I have 7 used the reference numeral 10 to indicate generally, .that portion my device, which I is bent so that it forms an ear engaging member. The ear engaging member 10 is provided near its lower end with a curved portion 11 and an upwardly extending portion 12.
The curved portion 11 is adapted to fit around the under side of the ear of the user I of the device. The upper portion of the ear engaging member 1() is provided with a downwardly curved portion 13, which is adapted to fit over the upper portion of the ear of the user of the device.
It willbe seen that by so shaping the device, as is shown in Figs. 2 and 4, that when once placed around the ear, it will remain there.
Near the curved portion 13, I provide a bent portion 14, which provides a link to which may be fastened the chain 15. The chain 15 is of ordinary type used for holding spectacles against accidental dropping. I have used the reference numeral 16 to indicate the spectacles. r
The upper end of the wire is provided with an upwardly projecting portion, which is substantially inverted U-shaped. The reference numeral 17 indicates the inverted U-shaped member, which holds the pencil in position when my device is in use.
The end of the wire is wrapped around the ear engaging member 10 at 18. The upwardly projecting portion 17 is inwardly inclined, as is shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. 1 It will be seen that by slightly inclining the member 17 when the device is placed, it will rest firmly against the head of the userof the device.
When a pencil is placed between the memher 17 and the head of the user, it will remain there, and will require some little effort in order to withdraw it from position. The pencil or the like'18 is shownin position in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
It will be seen from the foregoing, that it is a very easy matter to slip the pencil between the members 17 and the head'ot the user, and by providing the member 17 with a slightly, inwardly, inclined portion, it insuresthe user of'the pencil that it will remain in position under practically all circumstances. v
In the modified form of my device shown in Fig. 4, of the drawings, 10 indicates the ordinary'ear en aging member and 19-, the upwardly extending ed to hold the pencil in position. 7 p
In this form of the. device, the member 19 is made of a'separate piece of wire and is wrapped around the ear engaging member 10 at-20 and 21.
Some changes may be made in theconstruction and arrangement of the various parts of my devicefwithout departing from the essential features and purposesof my inportion, which is adaptr' 1 vention, and it my intention to cover: my claim, any modified forms of structure or use of mechanical equivalents, which may 'be reasonably included within their scope,
I claim as my invention:
VA combination pencil clip and spectacle holder comprisinga link of resilient wire curved at its lower portion to form an upwardly opening member for receiving the lower partof the ear and curved thence upwardly to fit the back of the ear, thence forwardly'an'd downwardly for fitting over the upward portion of the ear, said wire being foldedback over saiddownwardly extending'portion with a short open loop to receive a-ehain or the like, fsaid wire being extended from said loop along side the downwardly the pencil clip, said clip being in-
