Description

J. AUTORINO. LUBRICATING DEVICE FOR RIVETING HAMMERS.
APPLICATION FILED SEPT- IQ, I919.

JOHN AUTQRINO,
sic.
OF MIDDLETOWN, NEW YORK.
LUBRICATING DEVICE FOR RIVETING-HAMMERS.
Application filed September 19, 1919.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN AU'romNo, citizen of the United States, residing at Middletown, in the county of Orange and State of New York,- have invented new and useful Improvements in Lubricating Devices for Rivetingllammers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a lubricating device for riveting hammers, and the object is to provide means designed to be carried by the casing, or that portion of the hammer adjacent to the handle, for lubricating the operative elements of the device and prevent undue heating, and permitting of the constant use of the implement without the annoyance arising from the failure of the parts to freely operate.
A further object is to provide a lubricat ing receptacle having mounted therein a stem carrying a valve member, with means for operating said stem and valve from a point adj acent to the handle proper, whereby the operator may actuate the valve for supplying lubricant whenever required, without changing the position of his hand in the ordinary manipulation of the implement.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel con struction, combination, and arrangement of elements hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings Figure 1 shows the lubrieating device in elevation, as applied to the casing of a hammer of the type indicated, Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the casing of the lubricating device, Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the latter, and Fig. 4: shows the washer for the valve.
In carrying out my invention I provide a lubrie ting receptacle 10, mounted on that portion of the casing or frame of the rivetin g hammer adjacent to the handle it thereof. The receptacle may be of any desired or convenient form, and is provided with a filling opening 16 closed by means of a plug 17 The cap 18 of the receptacle 10 carries a bracket 20 forked at its upper end and serving to mount a valve operatlng lever 21,
Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 324,884.
the fulcrum or pin being shown at 22. A stem 23 extends vertically through the receptacle 10 and carries at its lower end a valve member 25 and a washer 26, of any desired material, such as leather, the washer being shown in Fig. 4.
A coiled spring 27 surrounds the stem, and bears at its lower end against collar 26, and at its upper end against one of the two washers there shown. The stem passes through recess 23 provided with suitable packing.
A thumb plate 28 is carried by one end of the lever 21 and is within convenient reach of the operator, the position of the plate depending however on the type of hammer and the location of the trigger 29.
In the use of a hammer thus equipped, the tool may be used continuously without the sticking of the elements, and without overheating. A hammer not properly lubricated is the cause of annoying delays, and the workmanship on the rivets being set or headed, is poor.
l/Vhat is claimed isl. The combination with the casing of a riveting hammer and a trigger for controlline the operation of the hammer, of an oil receptacle mounted on the casing, a valve for controlling the discharge of oil from the receptacle, and an operating member for the valve, extending to a point adjacent to the trigger.
2. The combination with the casing of a riveting hammer and a trigger for said hammer, of an oil receptacle carried by the casing, a valve for the receptacle, a stem for the valve, and a pivoted arm connected with the stem and extending to a point above the trigger, permitting of the simultaneous operation of said trigger and arm.
3. The combination with the casing of a riveting hammer and a trigger for said hammer, of an oil receptacle carried by the casing, a valve for the receptacle, a spring for holding the valve normally closed, and means for controlling the trigger and valve simultaneously.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
JOHN AUTORINO.
