VALVE-PIN-INSERTING TOOL.
Application lcd November 21, 1922. Serial No. 602,386.
To all 'whom t may concern.:
Be it known that we, DUNBAR Gr. LAPLACE and EDWARD I-I. lMoons, citizens of the United States, residing at l/Voodville, inthe county of Wilkinson and State of sippi, have invented new and useful 1mproveinents in Valve-Pin-Inserting Tools, of which the following is a specification.
Our present invention pertains to tools lo and it has for its purpose to provide a device that is adapted to easily and quickly insert valve pins into valve stems of any type of motors.
Other Objects and characteristic features of the invention may be fully understood from the following description and claim Vwhen the saine are road in connection with the drawings accompanying and forming part of this specification, in which:-
Figure 1 is a side elevation of our novel tool and showing the straight pin type of stem,
Figure 2 of Figure 1.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the views of the drawings.
Our device comprises a barrel 1 that is provided with the integral finger piece 2 and at one end of the barrel we providela threaded cap 3. A stem 4 passes throu h the barrel 1 and cap 3 and secured to Jdie outer end of stem 4 is a' handle 5 and on its opposite end we secure a comparatively thin stem 9. Surrounding the stem 4 within the barrel 1 is a spring 10 that abuts at one end on a pin (not designated) and bears on its opposite end against one end of the barrel.
The straight pin construction comprises `a hollow tubing 8 that is adapted t0 surround thel stem 9 and is provided with the push-bit portion 6 that enters a receiving portion at the upper end of the barrel 1. 4s Manifestly the tubing carries a slidable nut 7 that is threaded on the upper end of the barrel 1 when the tubing and its bit portion are positioned for use on the barrel.
The tubing 5o upper end and a .lip 13 that is welded or otherwise secured on the tubing and cais a longitudinal sectional view Missis- 4the pin to be set, the tool is capable of hold- 8 is formed with a straightv pable of lightly holdin a valve pin 12 in the upper end of the tu ing.
When it' is desired to set the pin 12 in a valve stemvthat is generally very inaccessh ble, it is simply necessary to position the pin 12 and then push the grip 5 which action will cause the stem 4 to move forwardly in the barrel and impart similar movement to the thin stem 9. This Stem 9 will push the pin 12 from the end of the tubing. Manifestly this ltool will obviate the actual contact of the operator with the pin to be set and irrespective of the size of ing and dropping the pin at the point and time desired.
The device is extremely simple in construction and operation and enables the operator t0 drop various types of pin into valve stems or other inaccessibleplaces with facility.
Having vdescribed our invention, what we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
In means for setting valve-stem pins, the combination of a comparatively long casing, a cap havino a central opening therein, and threaded to `one end of the casing, a movable stem having va portion thereof arranged in the casing and having a grip on one end thereof, a spring surrounding the portion-of stem within the casing and secured to one end of the stem and abutting at its opposite end against the interior of the casing7 a comparatively thin stem secured to and forming a continuation of the first stem, a second casing threaded to the p first casing and surrounding the thin stem;
said second casing having an open surface on one side, and a spring clip secured to the second casing and ac apted to enter the open end of the same.
ln testimonv whereof we have hereunto set our hands in presence of two subscribing oe witnesses.
Witnesses JAMES L. HU'rormsoN, JOSEPH N. MILLER.
