Description

"Unirse sT-Aras PATENT ortica;
JoNEs LILLIE EEEEMANoE PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIAASSIGNOE 'oP Two- EIFTHS To ESSEX H. HENDEICKS, 0E PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
CHIMNEY.
` Application filed October 9, 1918. Serial No. 257,488.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, JONES L. FREEMAN, a citizen of the United States, residingat Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Chimneys, of which the following is a specication.
This invention has reference to a novel construction of portable lire places for use in camps or like situations and the principal object of the invention is to provide a device of this nature made up of a plurality of easily assembled parts constituting a fire place and a chimney. Y
Another object of the invention is to provide the different parts with tongues and grooves and lap joints so the parts may be easily assembled and to secure the proper draft forthe fire. v
The invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which:-
Figure 1 is a front view of the invention;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section;
Fig. 3 is a cross section on line 3-3 of Fi 2.
In these views, 1 indicates the base which is of flat rectangular form and is provided with a concaved recess 2 in its uppervface at the front part thereof. A groove 3 is formed in the upper face of the base adjacent the rear edge thereof and at the sides, on each side of the recess. 4 indicates a pair of base blocks, each of angle Shape. These blocks are provided with the tongues 5 on the lower edges which are adapted to engage with the grooves 3 in the base. The upper edges of these blocks are provided with the grooves 6. The upper part of the re place is formed of the three blocks 7, each of which is provided with the tongue 8 at its lower edge which engages the groove Specification of Letters Patent. Pgttmgjged June ,1, 1920,
6 in the blocks 4. The meeting ends of the `A three blocks are tongued andgrooved, as at 9 and the rear block curves inwardly .and upwardly for directing the products of combustion to the chimney. This chimney consists of the lower section 10 and the upper section 11. These sections are provided with the lap joint 12 and the lowersection is connected with the upper art ofthe fire place by the lap joint 13. ttention isfcalled to the fact that the inner flange 14 of each lap extends upwardly from the lower section so as to prevent leakage at theV joints. The sides of the section 7 curve outwardly and downwardly so as to engage the vertical sides of the upper part of the fire place. This section forms the throat and together with the curved rear plate of the vfire place will prevent the smoke from passing through the front of the fire place. The joints may be filled in with mortar when necessary. It will be seen that the recess in the base extends entirely through the front edge thereof so that ashes may be withdrawn from the bottom of the fire place through this recess.
I prefer to make the blocks 4 of greater width than the plates of the upper fire place so as to provide a ledge 4 to receive grate bars or a fire basket so that the device may be made to burn coal or the like.
The different parts may be made of burnt clay or any other suitable material. It will be seen that the device may be easily and quickly set up and when Vnot in use the parts may be packed together so as to occupy but little space. When so packed the parts may be easily transported from'place to place.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make-changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described the invention, what is claimed is A device of the class described comprising a basehaving a recess in its upper face in the front part thereof, a pair of angle base blocks having tongue and groove connection with said hase,v a pair of vertical side plates and a rear plate of Curved form having i tongue and groove connections with the base blocks and with each other, a hollow Chimney section having lap joints' with the up:
per edges of said plates, the sides of said section curving outwardly and downwardly and a second section having lap joint with 10 the first section.
In testirnonyvwhereoil I aflix my signature.
