Description
H.HARVEY. LINING FOR CHIMNEYS AND OPEN FIREPLACES.
APPLICATION FILED AUG-20 19l9.
Patented May 16, 1922.-
entree stares HENRY HARVEY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
LI1\TING FOR CHIMNEYS AND OIPEN FIREELACES.
Application filed August 20, 1919.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY HARVEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Linings for Chimneys and Open Fireplaces, of which the following is a specification.
Figure 1, is a perspective view of the lining ready to be placed in an open fire place. Fig. 2, is a vertical transverse sectional view on, line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3, is a longitudinal sectional view on line 33 of Fig. 2.
The object of my invention is to provide a lining for an open fire place to be fastened to a grate at its front end by any suitable means. It is constructed so as to provide a fuel space at the back of the grate to which it is fastened. In said space a draft is created around the fire basket attached to the grate or to any fire made therein where andirons are used.
In the accompanying drawing, A represents the end plates constructed of fire clay or other suitable material and resting on the bottom of an open fire place, B represents the lower back plate resting on the bottom of an open fire place and C represents the upper back plate resting on the lower back plate B. D represents the bevelled edge of the front end of the vertical plates which fits into a groove or recess at the back of the Grate front C and is made fast thereto by any suitable means. E represents the joint formed by fitting the edges of the back plate C to the back edges of the end plates A, A. F represents the joint formed by fitting together the edges of the back plates 13 and C. All joints are made air tight by cement or any other suitable substance. G represents a fire basket attached to an ordinary Grate front G and placed in the fuel space formed by my lining. H represents a front plate of which there are two, one being Specification of Letters Patent.

placed at each end of the grate front G, and serving as facings therefor. Said front plates are shown fragmentally and in dotted line but. may obviously be extended upward to cover the entire length of the two end plates A, at the edges of the latter.
The bars G of the grate front have their ends secured to the uprights K which latter constitute the joint between the side and front bars of the grate. This arrangement secures a rigid structure, capable of resisting the tendency to accidental separation of parts through the strain incident to normal use of such grates.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a lining for fire places the combination of a front grate, a back plate composed of two sections, placed one upon the other, on a horizontal edge line, the lower plate inclined rearwardly and upwardly to meet the horizontal lower edge of the upper plate and the latter inclined upwardly and forwardly from the line connecting it with said lower plate, two side plates each connected by a rabbet joint to the back plate at its opposite ends, each of said side plates being formed with a vertical bevel edge from top to bottom, upright bars provided on their rear face with a groove fitting over the bevel edge of said plateat the lower end of said plate, and having secured thereto the opposite ends of the front grate bars, vertical front plates covering the upright bars at each side of the grate, and all secured firmly together substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in the presence of twowitnesses.
