Snow Pro;
JHABLES W. G. ALLENDER, OF WASHINGTON, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- FOURTH TO LOUIS G. RASEL, OF WASHINGTON, PENNSYLVANIA.
BUTTON.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 1, 1920.
Application filed January 26, 1920. Serial No. 354,025.
To all whom it may concern:
Washington and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful-Improvements in Buttons, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in buttons and has relation more particularly to a device of this general character of a separable type, and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved button comprising two members, one constituting a male member and the other constituting a female member, and which members coact in such a manner as to be readily and conveniently connected or disconnected in accordance with the oc-- casions of practice.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved device of this general character comprising two separable members and wherein each of said members is provided with means whereby the same may be readily and effectively applied.
Furthermore, it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character comprising two separable members adapted to effectually interlock but which can be readily separated by strain whereby the button is particularly adapted for use in connection with garments worn in cold weather and especially garments worn by the young.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved button whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a cross sectional view taken through a button constructed in accordance with my invention with the members thereof in assembled relation a Fig. 2 is a view in end elevation of the hollow member comprised in the female part of the button;
Fig. 3 is a view in side elevation of the member illustrated in Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a View in plan of a retaining washer as herein included; and
Fig. 5 is anenlarged sectional view taken substantially on the line 51-5 of Fig. 4. As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, my improved button comprises two separable members, A and B, the member A constituting a male member and the member B constituting a female member. The member B comprises an enlarged head or button 1 of any desired material and having its inner face preferably flat and at substantially its axial center, the head or button l is provided with a socket 2. Disposed through the head or button 1 at the center of the socket 2 is an opening 3 having its outer end enlarged as at 4. 5 denotes a cylindrical member, preferably of metal, having one end 6 closed, said closed end 6 being provided at substantially its axial center with the openings 7.
The closed end portion of the member 5 seats within the socket 2 with the o enings 7 registering with the opening 3. xtending through said registering openings 3 and 7 is a rivet 8 or the like which serves to hold the member 5 to the head or button 1. It is preferred that the head of the rivet be outwardly disposed and substantially housed within the enlarged portion 4 so that the outer or exposed face of the head or button 1 may have disposed thereover a lamination 9 of cloth or other material to give a finished effect to the member B.
Snugly fitting within the member 5 is a body 10 of rubber'or other yieldable material and which is provided at substantially its axial center with a restricted opening 11. The body 10, in the present embodiment of my invention, is held against displacement from within the member 5 by having the outer or free marginal portion of said member 5 suitably crimped as at 12. V
The side wall of the member 5 is provided with the elongated openings 14 extending substantially in parallelism with the axis of said member 5 and a portion of the material removed from the wall to form said openings is extended outwardly to provide the fin ers or lu s 15 adapted to coact with the r holding or clamping washer 16.
The interior marginal portion of the lugs 15 readily pass and by imparting a slight rotary movement to the washer 16, the lugs or fingers 15 serve to hold the washer 16 against movement toward the free end of the member 5. The member 5 is adapted to be suitably disposed through the cloth of a garment with the head or button 1 arranged outwardly thereof and the washer 16 coacts with the inner surface of said cloth so that the member B is effectively anchored in applied position.
I also find it of advantage to provide the inner marginal portion of the washer 16 between the recesses or notches 17 with the spaced raisedportions 18 affording pockets or depressions a therebetween and in which the lugs or.fingers 15 are adapted to seat so that said washer 16 is held against rotary movement and the member B maintained against accidental displacement. While it is believed to be obvious, it is to be stated that the washer 16 substantially snugly surrounds the member 5.
The member A comprises a head or button 19 provided in its inner face and at substantially its axial center with a socket 20 in which snugly engages an end portion of a cylindrical member 21. The outer end 22 of the member 21 is closed and said closed end, at substantially its axial center, is provided with an opening 23 to register with an opening 24 through the head or button 19. The wall of the member 21 adjacent its outer or closed end is provided with the outstanding fingers or lugs 25, preferably struck therefrom and which coact with the washer 26 in the same manner as has been hereinbefore set forth with respect to the washer 16 and the lugs or fingers 15 and for which reason similar parts of the washer 26 are'identified by the same reference characters as those applied to the washer 16.
Extending through the registerin or alined openings 23 and 24 is a shan 27, said shank being provided with an annular shoulder or flange 28 contacting with the closed end 22 of the member 21 and an end portion of said shank 27 is upset, as at 29, for contact with the outer face of the head or button 19.
The shank 27 extends beyond the closed end 22 of the member 21 and terminates in a spear head 30 which is adapted to be forced into the restricted openirlg 11 of the body 10 whereby the members and B are effectively interlocked. The body 10, being of rubber or other yieldable materiahpermits the members A and B to be conveniently separated by imposing strain or prull upon either of the members A and B. he functioning of the body 10 is materially facilitated. by the openings 14 hereinbefore referred to.
The member 21 is adapted to be disposed through the fabric of a garment or the like and in proper position for requisite coaction with the member B and said member A is held to the fabricby the washer 26, said washer 26 coacting with one face of the fabric and the head or enlargement 19 coacting with the opposite face. It is to be understood that the member B may be made of wood, bone, composition, or any material or substance which can be employed with advantage.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a button constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also beobvious that my invention is susceptible of .some change and modification without departing from the princi les and spirit thereof, and for this reason do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim:
1. A button comprising two separable members provided with interlocking means, each of said members including a head, a member carried thereby, outstanding fingers carried by the member, and a retaining washer adapted to surround said member and provided in its inner portion with notches through which the fingers of the member freely pass, said fingers upon a partial rotation of the washer overlying said washer and holding the same a ainst movement in a direction away from t e head, said washer being provided with means for'normally holding the same against rotation.
