gnou/vio@ UNITE ST KENJIRO OKAMURO, OF IJIANOA, HONOLU'IU, TERRITORY OF HAWAII.
LIFE-BOAT.
Application filed September 25, 1915.
To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, KENJIRO OKAMURO, a subject of the Emperor of Japan, residing at Manoa, city of Honolulu, in the Island of Honolulu and Territory 0f Hawaii, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Life-Boats; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to life boats.
The object of the invention is to provide a life boat embodying an improved construction for preventing same from capsizing in a rough sea.
A further object of the invention is to provide a life boat which will be simple in construction and efficient in use, it being noted that the portion of the structure of the boat designed to prevent capsizing can be associated with an ordinary boat with eflicient results.
lVith the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing the invention in detail reference -will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of refer ence denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which- Figure l is a plan View of a life boat constructed in accordance with the invention;
Fig. 2, a side View of a fragment of what is shown in Fig. l on an enlarged scale;
Fig. 3, a section on the line 3v3 of Fig. 2, and
Fig. et, a section on the line 4 4 of F ig. 2.
Referring to the drawings A indicates a boat of the usual shape employed in the construct-ion of life boats. Secured to either side of the boat A is a float or buoy B of Speceation of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 28, 1917.
Serial No. 52,700.
substantially cylindrical shape and having its ends tapered to a point as at l0. These floats or buoys B may be constructed of any suitable material such as thin metal and are of course hollow to provide the necessary buoyancy. Each iioat B is secured against the related side of the boat A by means of a plurality of U-shaped straps ll the ends of which are secured to the boat by means of bolts l2. Each of the straps ll is provided with a longitudinal passage 13 therethrough and extending through these passages is a bar 14E which is disposed in spaced relation to the adjacent float B and serves to protect the latter against damage as will be obvious. By tapering the ends of each float it will be apparent that they will offer little resistance to the movement of the boat while the buoyacy of the floats will effectively resist any tendency of the boat to capsize in a rough sea.
What is claimed is An attachment for a boat, consisting of a pair of cylindrical float elements and adapted to be secured to opposite sides of the boat in symmetrical relation and to abut said sides, and securing means for each float element consisting of a plurality of spa-ced longitudinally alined brackets, each bracketI shaped to conform closely to the curvature of the float element and to embrace the `float element through substantially the entire circumference thereof spanned by the bracket, and each bracket terminating in oppositely bent portions adapted to be secured against the boat side, said brackets further provided upon the outer sides of the float elements with openings adapted to receive guard bars, and guard bars lodged in said openings in spaced relation to said float elements.
In testimony whereof, I aiiiX my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
