Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY T. DEXTER, OF ZANESVILLE, OHIO.
WHARF-BOAT.
Specification of Letters Patent No.
T0 all wiz-0m, t mag/concern.'
Be it known that I, HENRY T. DEXTER, of Zanesville, in the county of Muskingum and State of Ohio, have made a new and useful Improvement in the Construction of Vharf-Boats; and I do hereby declare the following to be a' full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part thereof, in which- Figure l represents a top View of a por` tion of the boat. Fig. i), represents a vertical transverse section through the same.
Similar letters in the drawings refer to like parts.
The nature of my 'invention consists in so constructing a wharf boat, as thatla turn. table may be conveniently located therein, upon which a cart, dray, or wagon may be turned, sowas to receive o-r discharge freight, from any portion of the boat.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the same with reference to the drawings.
The boat in form may be similarto those now in use, and on the bottom of the boat, at any convenient point, a suitable step is arranged to receive the shaft or axis of a turn table G, which has friction rollers E, underneath it, near its perimeter, to cause it toturn freely.y I have represented in the 12,380, dated February 13, 1855.
drawing the turn table located at the outer edge of the boat, so that freight from a steamboat or other vessel alongside may be taken from, or delivered immediately onto adray. It may however be located elsewhere, and where the wharf bo-at admits of it two turn tables may be used. I prefer placing the turn table below decks, as seen in the drawing, and making an inclined gangway B, leading down to it, wide enough for a dray to pass. But if preferred the turn table may be flush with the deck C.
The advantage of a wharf boat thus con structed is that, freight can be delivered or received thereon at any point, without overhauling it, or transshipment may be direct fro-m or onto the dray, and thus save much labor in handling'.
Having thus fully described the nature of my invention what I claim therein as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent; is"
So constructing a wharf boat, as that a turn table may be conveniently located therein, upon which a dray may be driven and turned around, and so that freight may be delivered or received from any part of the boat without much handling, substantially as described. s
HENRY T. DEXTER.
