Speciicaton of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 7, 1917.
Application filed January 4, 1917. Serial No. 140,562.
[o all 'zn/wm t may concern.'
Be it known that I, CHARLES O'rrs GRIF- FIN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Newbern, in the county of Craven and State of North Carolina, have invented an Imp-rovement in lToy Balls, of which the following is a specification..
My invention is an improvement in toy balls, and has for its object to provide a ball of the character specified, wherein a ball is provided having thereupon the representation of a face or faces, and wherein a sectional cover of elastic material is provided, which may be placed on the ball to cover thc same or may be removed, and wherein a cord is connected with the ball and adapted to be wound thereupon beneath the cover or partially beneath the same, the cover' sections being adapted to form a bust and a head covering for the figure, and wherein the ball proper may be hollow and provided with a whistle, and with means therein for causing a rattling when the ball is shaken.
In the drawings:
Figure l is a front view of the ball with the cover sections used as head covering and bust, showing one of the faces.
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the other face.
Fig. 3 is a front view of the ball with the covers in place and with the cord beneath the cover.
Fig. I is a perspective view with the cord extended.
Fig. 5 is a sectional view.
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the parts detached.
In the present embodiment of the invention, the ball l is of rubber, and is provided with a whistle 2which may be sounded by pressing the ball to force out the air therein. When the pressure is relaxed, the ball will assume its original shape. Within the ball may be arranged bodies indicated at 3, which, when the ball is shaken, will producea rattling sound.
A cord 4. is connected with the ball, the said cord being of ribbon formed as shown, in order that it may be wrapped smoothly on the ball in the manner shown in Figs. 3 and 5, to permit the placing of the cover sections to be described.
The peripheral surface of the ball is provided with one or more representations of faces, two in the present instance, each face occupying approximately half the area of the surface of the ball. Cover sections `5 and 6 are provided for covering the ball, thc said sections being of iiexible rubber, and of semi-spherical form, and each section is provided with a segmental vulcanized ,portion 7 at its center. These sections are of a size and are shaped to fit closely over the ball in the manner shown in Figs. 3 and Ll, and they are also arranged to be reversed to form a bust and head covering for the representations of the faces.
The section 5 is provided on its inner face with shade lines to indicate portions of clothing, to complete with the face representation the representation of a figure, as shown in Figs. l and 2, and the other section 6, of the cover, may be reversed, as shown in said Figs. l and 2 to provide a head covering. When the section 5 is used as a .bust or base for the ball, the cord is wrapped around the neck, that is, is wound between the ball and the cover section. The
improved ball may be used as a figure, or as a ball without the covers, or as a ball 'with the covers, or as a return ball when the cord is extended. With the bodies 3 the ball is converted into a rattle. rEhe ball may be used as a return ball either with or without the covers.
It will be understood that a series of coverings might be provided, the sections of each series having representations of faces thereon, and that the covers might be arranged one upon the other in the same manner as the layers of an onion, or that the cover sections might be interchangeable.
I claim:
l. A toy ball comprising an elastic hollow ball having a whistle and a rattle, and having the representation of a plurality of faces on its surface, and having a cord connected therewith, and liexible elastic semispherical covers for the ball, each cover having a portion at the center thereof vulcanized.
2. A toy ball comprising an elastic hollow ball having the representation of a plurality of faces on its surface, and having a cord connected therewith, and flexible elastic semi-spherical covers for the ball, each cover having a portion at the center thereof vulcanized.
3. A toy ball comprising a ball having a representation of a face on its surface, and having a cord connected therewith, and
flexible elastic semi-spherieal Covers for the representation of a face on its Siiifaoe, and lo ball, each cover having a portion at the cenle'ible elastic semi-sphei'ical covers for the ter thereof vulcanized. ball. i Y
4. A toy ball comprising a ball having a 6. A toy ball comprising a ball7 and flex- 5 representation of a face on its surface, and ible elastic semi-spherical covers for the ball.
having a Cord connected therewith, and CHARLES OTIS GRIFFIN. flexible elastic semi-spherical covers for the Witnesses: ball. n ALLEN F. PETWAY,
5. A toy ball comprising a ball having a CARLYLE MORRIS.
