SIDNEY PERCIVAL EVANS, OF PETONE, NEW ZEALAND.
APPARATUS FOR OPERATING ROLLER WINDOW -BLINDS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 31, 1917.
Application filed November s, 1916. Serial No. 130,238.
To aZZ whom 2'25 may concern:
Be it known that I, SIDNEY PERCIVAL Evans, a citizen of the Dominion of New Zealand, and residing at Petone, in the Provincial District of lVellington, in the Dominion of New Zealand, have invented certain new and useful Improved Apparatus for Operating Roller Window-Blinds, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in means for operating curtains.
The invention consists in providing a drum on one end of the curtain roller, and providing a ratchet wheel on the end of same, to be engaged by a gravity pawl when a cord wound upon the drum is slackoned, the parts being so arranged that when the cord is pulled, the pawl is disengaged and the curtain can be adjusted.
The invention also comprehends improvements in the details of construction and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims,
In the drawings Figure 1, is a front elevation, illustrating the application of the invention.
Fig. 2, is a side view thereof.
Fig. 3, is a plan view of the drum pawl.
Fig. 4;, is a view of a slightly different form of the invention.
1 a drum, which is fixed to the end of a roller 2, around which a curtain 3, is adapted to be wound, the outer flange 4:, of the drum being provided with ratchet teeth the faces 6 of which are radial.
The pivot 7 of the roller is mounted in :1 bracket 8, provided with a depending extension 21. the extreme lower end of which is extended forwardly and is provided with an eye 25, which is in rear of the vertical plane of the pivot 7. Above the eye 25, a pawl 22, is pivoted at 18, to the extension, and it is provided with a forward extension at the end of which is an eye 21, located about in the vertical plane of the front of the roller. The pawl extends upwardly as at 17, behind the ratchet, and is provided with teeth 23, which interlock with the ratchet teeth to hold the roller in set posi tion, the pawl being normally held in this position by a spring 26.
A. cord 13, is wound around the drum and hangs down from the front of the latter. The cord passes through the eye 21, and is deflected and passed through the eye 25,
the deflection being due to the eyes 21 and 25, being in different vertical planes.
In Fig. 4, I show an eye 27, disposed below the bracket, which may be substituted for the eye 25, in the extension.
In operation, assume the parts are in their normal position, as shown in Fig. 2. To raise the curtain 3, the operator pulls the cord, and because of the position of the eyes 21 and 25, and the deflection in the cord the pawl 17, is turned rearwardly on its pivot 18, and the teeth 23, are disengaged from the ratchet, whereupon by further pulling on the cord the roller is rotated and the curtain is raised. In lowering the curtain, the same operation is carried out, except that when the pawl is disengaged, the cord is slackened, and the weight of the curtain and its stick 16, causes the roller to rotate in the opposite direction.
l/Vhat I claim is,
1. In combination, a curtain roller provided with a drum at one end, a ratchet wheel at the outer end of the drum, a bracket in which the roller is mounted, said bracket having a depending extension in the lower end of which is formed an eye located in rear of the vertical plane of the front of the drum, a pawl pivoted to the extension in rear of the vertical plane of the eye, the upper end of the pawl havin a tooth which engages the ratchet, said pawl having an intermediate forwardly extended member formed with an eye located intermediate the vertical planes of the eye on the extension and the front of the drum, and a cord wound around the drum and passed through the eyes, whereby when pull is exerted on the cord'the pawl is turned on its pivot and the tooth is disengaged from the ratchet.
2. In combination, a curtain roller provided with a drum at one end, a ratchet wheel at the outer end of the drum, a bracket in which the roller is mounted, said bracket having a depending extension, a guide eye located below the roller and in rear of a vertical plane through the center of the drum, a pawl pivoted to the lower portion of the extension and in rear of the vertical plane of the eye, the upper end ofthe pawl having a tooth which engages the ratchet wheel, said pawl having an in termediate forwardly extended member formed with an eye located intermediate the vertical planes through the first mentioned eye and the front of the drum, and name to this specification in the presence a cord Wound around the drum and passed. of two Witnesses.
Eltfid on the cord the pawl 15 eurneo on its pivot and the tooth is disengaged from the Witnesses:

In testimony whereof I have signed my JAMES ANDERSON HARDIE.
Gopies of this atent ma be obtained for five cents each, in addressing the Commissioner of Patents V 7 Washington, 33. t1.
