To all whom 'it ma/y concer/n.-

Be it known that I, SILAs S. PUTNAM, of Dorchester, in the county of Norfolk, and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Curtain- Fixtures, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part ofthis specification, in which- Figure lis a perspective view of a window-frame, having my improved curtain-fixture applied thereto.

Figure 2 is a front elevation of the same.

Figure 3 is a section on the line x of iig. 2.

My invention relates to an improvement upon that class of curtainLiXtures in which a ratchetrwheel, at the end of the roll, is employed, in connection with a pivoted stop, which is operated by the cord used to raise and lower the curtain; and

My invention consists in a sliding stop, in combinaA tion with a wheel, provided with projections or notches,

and secured to the end of the curtain-roll, the stop being so arranged that it can be easily operated by the cord .in al convenient manner, when the curtain is to be raised or lowered, and will also retain the curtain at the desired height.

To enable others skilled in the art to understand and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the .manner in which I have carried it out.

In the said drawings- A -represents a window-frame, to'which are attached the brackets B C, which support the wooden` curtainroll D, to the right-hand end of which is secured a reel or pulley, the outer portion of which consists of a vtoothed wheel, E.

G is a sliding dog or stop, the point, a, of which is curved upward, and engages ywith the teeth of the wheel E, the stop being secured to the inside of the bracket .C by pins, b,'which are provided with heads, and pass through inclined slots, c, into the bracket.

The cord H, by which the curtain is raised or lowered, is secured to the spindle el of the reel, and passes through' an eye, e, atthe outer extremity of the sliding stop G, and it will be seen that a slight downward pull upon the cord H will cause the stop' to slide in the direction ofthe red a1row,fig. 3, carrying the point a away from the teeth of the wheel E, when the cord may be allowed to slip through the fingers, the weight ofthe curtain, as it descends, acting upon the cord, and producing sufficient tension thereon to retain the point a of the stop G out o f contact with the teeth of the Wheel E; but when the cord is suddenly slackened, or the hand is removed entirely therefrom, the stop will immediately fall back and catch one of the teeth of the O, their positions may be reversed, the slots beingl formed in the'bracket; and the sliding stop may be so formed and arranged as to engage with either side of the wheel E, as may be found most desirable; and this wheel E may be provided with notches instead of projections, if preferred.

v Instead of the slots c in the stop G being inclined, as above described, they may be made horizontal, without departing from the spirit of rnyinvention, in which case, an outward pull upon the cord H would he required to bring the sliding stop back into contact with the teeth of the wheel E. I therefore prefer to make them inclined, as first described.

as it is evident that the sliding stop G may be attached to the bracket by other means, if desired.

'The left-hand end of the roll D fits into a metallic cap, I, provided with a pin, f, which fits into an open slot inthe bracket B, so as to allow this end of the roll to be raised, when the in g, at the opposite end, may be withdrawn from its caring in the bracket O, and the roll taken down, if desired.
